PART 2: THE FATHER WHO CHOSE ANOTHER CHILD

I stood there holding Olivia’s daughter in my arms.

The baby was so small.
So fragile.

Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine without knowing that the woman holding her was the same woman whose own daughter had just been pushed aside.

Across the room, Isabella was still crying.

My daughter.

The child I had carried for nine months.

The child whose heartbeat I had listened to every night.

The child who had almost taken every bit of strength from my body during labor.

And yet, in this room, she was the only person nobody wanted to comfort.

Edward looked at me with irritation.

“What are you doing standing there?”

His voice was cold.

The same voice he used whenever I failed to meet his expectations.

“Take care of Olivia’s baby properly.”

I looked at him.

For a moment, I wanted to ask him one question.

If he cared so much about being a father…

Why had he ignored his own daughter for three days?

Why had he never once woken up at night when Isabella cried?

Why had he never held her without being asked?

But I swallowed every word.

Because I knew.

If I confronted him now, he would only turn everything against me.

He would say I was jealous.

He would say I was insecure.

He would say I was attacking a helpless mother and child.

So I smiled.

A very calm smile.

“Of course.”

Edward seemed satisfied.

He turned back toward Olivia.

That small movement told me everything.

Even now.

Even after seeing me standing there exhausted and broken.

His first instinct was still to protect her.

Not me.

Not our daughter.

I slowly walked toward the bed where Isabella was lying.

She had finally stopped crying.

But her little face was red from exhaustion.

My heart almost shattered.

I reached out.

But before I could touch her, Olivia spoke.

“Emma.”

I stopped.

She looked at me with a gentle expression.

Too gentle.

“I know this is difficult for you.”

“But please understand Edward is just trying to help me.”

“My daughter deserves a father.”

I looked at her.

“And my daughter?”

The smile on Olivia’s face disappeared for a second.

Then she sighed.

“Your daughter already has a mother.”

Those words were quiet.

But cruel.

Because she knew exactly what she was saying.

She believed being a mother was enough.

That a child didn’t need to be protected from losing her father.

That my place could be replaced.

Edward walked over and placed his hand on Olivia’s shoulder.

A gesture that looked natural.

A gesture that hurt more than any insult.

“Emma, don’t make this complicated.”

“Olivia has been through a lot.”

I lowered my eyes.

“Yes.”

“She has.”

“And I haven’t?”

Edward became silent.

For a moment, I thought he might finally understand.

But then he looked away.

That was when I knew.

There was nothing left to save.

Not our marriage.

Not his image.

Not the man I thought I loved.

I gently placed Olivia’s baby back into her arms.

“Take care of her.”

Edward frowned.

“What do you mean?”

I looked at him.

“You said she needed a complete family.”

“So give her one.”

His expression changed.

“Emma.”

I ignored him.

I walked to Isabella’s crib.

This time, I picked up my daughter.

The first time in three days.

The moment my arms wrapped around her, she immediately stopped crying.

Her tiny body relaxed against me.

And I felt something return.

Something Edward and Olivia could never take.

My bond with my child.

Edward stared at us.

Almost confused.

Because he finally saw what he had ignored.

I didn’t need his permission to be Isabella’s mother.

I didn’t need his approval to love her.

I carried her life inside me.

And nobody could steal that.

Later that night, while Edward and Olivia were still discussing their perfect future, I quietly left the room.

I went to the hospital administration office.

I placed the documents on the table.

The birth certificate.

The medical records.

The security footage request.

And the report about the changed identification bracelets.

The nurse looked at me in shock.

“Mrs. Grant… are you sure you want to do this?”

I looked through the glass window toward the maternity ward.

Edward was standing beside Olivia.

Smiling.

Holding a baby that wasn’t his.

While ignoring the daughter who was.

“Yes.”

My voice was calm.

“Because tomorrow, everyone will know the truth.”

The nurse hesitated.

“What truth?”

I looked at the documents.

“The truth that my husband didn’t accidentally confuse two babies.”

“He made a choice.”

“He chose another woman’s child.”

“And he tried to rewrite my daughter’s identity to complete a love story that ended years ago.”

The next morning, Edward walked into the hospital expecting everything to remain the same.

He expected me to forgive.

He expected me to stay silent.

He expected me to accept being second.

But when he entered the hallway, he stopped.

Because standing there were hospital officials.

Doctors.

Nurses.

And a legal representative.

His face changed.

“Emma…”

I held Isabella in my arms.

For the first time, I didn’t look like a broken wife.

I looked like a mother protecting her child.

Edward slowly approached.

“What is this?”

I smiled.

“The moment you wanted to give Olivia’s daughter a father…”

“I decided to find out what kind of father you really were.”

Then the hospital director handed him the report.

And the first line made Edward’s entire world collapse.

Because the evidence proved one thing:

The baby switch was not an accident.

It was planned.

And the person who helped Edward change my daughter’s identity…

Was someone from his own family.
