PART 2: THE INVESTOR WHO THOUGHT HE KNEW ME

The room was silent after Adrian said one word.

“Start.”

Three days ago, he had seen me in a hospital hallway and built an entire story around a ring, a child, and a man carrying car keys.

Today, he sat across from me with the power to decide whether my company would survive.

But the strangest part was not his position.

It was his expression.

Adrian Black was a master at hiding emotions.

I knew that better than anyone.

Four years ago, I knew every small change in his face.

The way his jaw tightened when he was angry.

The way his fingers tapped against a table when he was nervous.

The way he looked away when he was hurt but refused to admit it.

And right now?

He was pretending not to care.

Which meant he cared.

A lot.

I connected the presentation screen.

“HerPulse was created to solve a problem that has been ignored for decades.”

My voice was steady.

“Our technology uses continuous health tracking to help women understand their bodies through real-time data.”

The investors watched the presentation.

All except Adrian.

He wasn’t looking at the screen.

He was looking at me.

Not obviously.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But I noticed.

Because I had spent years learning him.

“You built this company after leaving your previous position?”

Adrian finally spoke.

His voice was calm.

Professional.

Like we had never loved each other.

“Yes.”

“And you founded it alone?”

“Yes.”

He leaned back.

“Interesting.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Is there a problem with that?”

“No.”

His eyes moved briefly to my hand.

“The person who designed this product seems very different from the person I remember.”

The room became slightly uncomfortable.

Chloe looked at me.

She knew.

Everyone in that room thought Adrian was talking about business.

But I knew he was talking about us.

I smiled politely.

“People change.”

A strange emotion crossed his face.

“Yes.”

“They do.”

The meeting continued.

Financial projections.

Market analysis.

Growth strategy.

Every question Adrian asked was sharp.

Precise.

Almost unfair.

But I expected that.

Adrian had always been brilliant.

That was part of what attracted me to him.

He never accepted easy answers.

Unfortunately, he eventually started applying that same attitude to people.

Including me.

After nearly an hour, Adrian closed the folder.

“I have one final question.”

Everyone became quiet.

“Why did you leave?”

The question was simple.

But everyone knew it wasn’t about my company.

It was about four years ago.

The airport.

The seventeen missed calls.

The message I sent.

Don’t wait for me.

I looked at him.

“The company?”

He didn’t answer.

So I continued.

“I left because I needed to build something that belonged to me.”

A pause.

“Not because someone allowed me to exist beside them.”

His expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Adrian understood.

The meeting ended twenty minutes later.

The investors left one by one.

Chloe stayed behind, pretending to organize papers.

She was waiting.

Of course she was.

When the room was finally empty, Adrian stood.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“You could have told me.”

I looked at him.

“About what?”

His eyes moved toward my hand.

“The ring.”

I almost laughed.

After everything, he was still thinking about that.

“You never asked.”

His expression tightened.

“I saw you.”

“You saw a story you created.”

That hit him.

Because it was true.

“You had a child.”

“No.”

“You had a family.”

“Yes.”

His eyes narrowed.

“With someone else.”

I shook my head.

“My family.”

The silence afterward was almost painful.

Adrian looked confused.

“Your family?”

“My brother Ethan.”

“And Lily?”

“My niece.”

The realization came slowly.

I watched it happen.

The hospital hallway.

The ring.

The child.

The car keys.

The entire fantasy he had created.

All wrong.

His face changed.

“You knew?”

I crossed my arms.

“About what?”

“The post.”

I smiled.

“So it was you.”

For the first time that day, Adrian looked embarrassed.

A rare sight.

“You read it?”

“Every word.”

His face became serious.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”

“No.”

I nodded.

“You were trying to convince yourself you didn’t care.”

He looked away.

That was the first time I saw the old Adrian.

The one from college.

The one who loved me before pride became more important than honesty.

“I thought you had moved on.”

“I did.”

The answer came too quickly.

And that was what hurt him.

Not anger.

Not resentment.

Just certainty.

Adrian looked at the company documents on the table.

“Is this why you avoided me?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Then why?”

I looked at him.

“Because I spent four years becoming someone I was before you.”

His expression softened.

“I never asked you to change.”

I smiled sadly.

“No.”

“You just loved the version of me that was easier for you.”

The words stayed between us.

Because neither of us could pretend anymore.

Then Adrian’s assistant suddenly rushed into the room.

“Mr. Black.”

His face was serious.

“We need to talk.”

Adrian turned.

“What happened?”

The assistant lowered his voice.

“The investment committee found a problem.”

Adrian frowned.

“What problem?”

The assistant placed a tablet on the table.

“There is another company trying to acquire HerPulse before this round closes.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

The assistant looked at me.

“And they appear to know your entire business strategy.”

Chloe stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian picked up the tablet.

His expression changed as he read.

Because this was no longer about investment.

Someone had leaked confidential information.

Someone close enough to know our plans.

Then the assistant said the name of the company behind the acquisition attempt.

And both Adrian and I froze.

Because the person leading the attack was someone from our past.

Someone who knew exactly how to hurt both of us.

Someone who had been waiting four years for this moment.
