/PART 2: The Man Behind the Perfect Mask

I waited until Adrian left the dressing room before making my next move.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I needed time.

Time to separate the woman who loved him from the mother who needed to protect her son.

For years, I had believed Adrian was the miracle that arrived after the hardest period of my life.

When Leo’s biological father disappeared, I thought I would have to raise my child alone.

Then Adrian appeared.

He never forced his way into our lives.

He was patient.

Gentle.

He learned Leo’s routines before he learned mine.

That was why the truth hurt so much.

Because the cruelest lies are not told by strangers.

They are told by the people who know exactly where your heart is.

I returned to the bridal suite and looked at myself in the mirror.

The wedding dress.
The jewelry.
The flowers in my hair.

Everything looked perfect.

A perfect picture hiding a terrible mistake.

Teresa stood behind me holding Leo.

“Claire…”

I turned around.

“Show me what you found.”

Her hands trembled as she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found it behind the wooden panel in Leo’s nursery.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“Why were you looking there?”

“I wasn’t.”

She swallowed.

“The panel was loose. I thought maybe something had fallen behind it.”

She placed the envelope on the table.

“Then I saw this.”

My heart started beating faster.

The envelope had no name.

No address.

Nothing.

I opened it carefully.

Inside were several documents.

The first page made my blood run cold.

It was a copy of my company’s ownership structure.

Sterling Developments.

My company.

My entire life’s work.

I turned the page.

Then another.

There were notes.

Handwritten notes.

About my habits.
My schedule.
My finances.

About Leo.

I felt sick.

“He was collecting information,” Teresa whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Because there was something worse.

At the bottom of one page was a sentence written in Adrian’s handwriting.

“Once married, access will become easier.”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

He hadn’t just planned to marry me.

He had planned to enter my life like a business transaction.

A strategy.

A takeover.

Teresa covered her mouth.

“Claire, we need to stop this wedding.”

I looked toward the window.

Below us, guests were still arriving.

People who loved me.

People who believed today was the beginning of a beautiful future.

But they didn’t know the truth.

They didn’t know the man standing at the altar was waiting for a signature.

A name.

A position.

Control.

I picked up my phone.

This time, I didn’t call the wedding coordinator.

I called my attorney.

“Robert?”

His voice immediately changed.

“Claire? Is everything okay?”

“No.”

I looked at the documents.

“Prepare an emergency protection order for my son.”

Silence.

Then:

“What happened?”

I took a breath.

“Adrian Hayes was never planning to become Leo’s father.”

My voice became steady.

“He was planning to gain control.”

Robert was silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“I’ll handle it.”

After hanging up, I received a message.

Adrian.

“Where are you? Everyone is waiting.”

I stared at the screen.

A few months ago, that message would have made me smile.

Today, it made me understand something.

He wasn’t asking if I was okay.

He was checking whether his plan was still on schedule.

I typed slowly.

“Come upstairs.”

Three dots appeared immediately.

“Finally.”

I almost laughed.

Finally.

He thought I was calling him because I was ready to become his wife.

He had no idea I was calling him because I wanted to see his face when he realized he had lost everything.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Adrian walked in wearing his wedding suit.

The same suit he planned to wear while taking control of my family.

He smiled.

“There you are.”

His eyes moved to Leo.

Then to me.

“What happened? Why aren’t you downstairs?”

I looked at him quietly.

Then I asked:

“Adrian, do you love me?”

For a second, confusion crossed his face.

Then he smiled.

“Of course I do.”

The answer came too quickly.

Too perfectly.

I nodded.

“Then tell me something.”

I held up the envelope.

“Why did you hide this in my son’s nursery?”

The smile disappeared.

Completely.

For the first time since I met him…

Adrian Hayes had no prepared answer.

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Not sadness.

Fear.

And that was when I knew.

The wedding was canceled.

But the real battle had just begun.

Because Adrian had spent months planning how to take my life apart.

He never imagined I would discover the truth before he signed his name.

And he never imagined that the person who would expose him first…

would be the person he underestimated the most.
