PART 2: THE MISTAKE THAT COST HIM EVERYTHING

The next morning, Marcus woke up expecting an argument.
He expected tears.
He expected me to ask him to choose between me and Olivia.
He expected the same conversation we had repeated countless times.

But when he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was my suitcase beside the door.

And for the first time, panic appeared on his face.

“Emma…”

I continued folding my clothes.

No anger.
No accusations.
No questions.

That seemed to bother him more than any fight could have.

“You’re really leaving?”

I looked at him.

“You already answered that question for me.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?”

I smiled faintly.

“It means that when I needed you, you were busy.”

The room became silent.

Marcus looked away.

For years, I had waited for him to notice small things.

The nights I cried quietly.
The exhaustion after endless work.
The moments when I wanted him to simply ask if I was okay.

But he always noticed Olivia first.

Her problems.
Her needs.
Her feelings.

Mine were always something to solve later.

“I didn’t know about your accident,” he finally said.

“No.”

“Because you didn’t tell me.”

I stopped packing.

“That’s true.”

He seemed relieved for a second.

As if he had finally found the reason to blame me.

“But why didn’t I tell you?” I asked.

Marcus said nothing.

“Because the first person I wanted to call was you.”

His expression changed.

“I called you from the ambulance.”

His face froze.

“What?”

I looked directly at him.

“You answered.”

Slowly, the color disappeared from his face.

“I was busy,” he whispered.

“Yes.”

My voice remained calm.

“You were.”

I closed the suitcase.

“And I heard Olivia asking you about earrings.”

Marcus opened his mouth.

But no explanation came.

Because there was nothing to explain.

The truth was simple.

When someone matters to you, you make time.

When someone doesn’t, you make excuses.

Two days later, I went back to the company.

Not to fight.

Not to create a scene.

I went to resign.

The entire department became silent when I walked in.

Everyone knew Olivia was now the director.

Everyone knew I had been the person behind the biggest projects for years.

But nobody expected me to walk in with a resignation letter.

Olivia appeared from her office.

She smiled.

“Emma.”

Her voice was sweet.

Almost too sweet.

“I heard you had some personal problems.”

I placed the document on her desk.

“I’m resigning.”

Her smile disappeared slightly.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

She leaned back.

“That’s unfortunate. You were one of our strongest employees.”

I looked at her.

Interesting.

A week ago, she had taken my position.

Now she was praising my ability.

But I didn’t care anymore.

Before leaving, I turned around.

“Oh, Olivia.”

“Yes?”

“The project you are presenting to the board next week…”

She looked at me.

“What about it?”

I smiled.

“Check the financial model again.”

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean the error I reported three weeks ago was never fixed.”

Silence.

A cold silence.

“You reported an error?”

“Yes.”

“To whom?”

I looked at her.

“Marcus.”

Her face became pale.

Because she knew.

Marcus had ignored me.

He had trusted her instead.

I walked out without saying anything else.

Three hours later, my phone started ringing.

First, it was my former manager.

Then another executive.

Then finally Marcus.

I didn’t answer.

The messages kept appearing.

“Emma, call me.”

“Please.”

“We need to talk.”

I looked at the screen.

For months, I had begged him to listen.

Now everyone suddenly needed my voice.

That evening, Marcus came to my apartment.

His face was exhausted.

“I know about the project.”

I stayed silent.

“The mistake would have caused millions in losses.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me again?”

I laughed softly.

“Because I did.”

He lowered his head.

“I didn’t believe you.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You believed Olivia.”

That sentence hurt him more than any accusation.

Because it was true.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Emma, I made a mistake.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“I was wrong about Olivia.”

“Yes.”

“I should have trusted you.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me desperately.

“Then why does it feel like you’ve already given up?”

I held the suitcase handle.

Because the answer was simple.

“Because I didn’t leave when I stopped loving you.”

I paused.

“I left when I realized loving you was destroying me.”

Marcus stood frozen.

For the first time, he looked like the man who was afraid of losing me.

But I no longer needed him to be afraid.

I had already survived losing him.

As I walked past him, my phone rang.

A new message appeared.

From the company that had offered me a position during my trip.

“Your office is ready. We look forward to welcoming our new executive director.”

Marcus saw the message.

His expression changed.

Because he finally understood.

I wasn’t walking away because I had nowhere to go.

I was walking away because I had somewhere better to be.

And the biggest mistake Marcus ever made…

was believing that the woman who built his success could never build a future without him.
