PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND HIS DISAPPEARANCE

The moment I stepped out of the airport, I knew something had changed.

The woman waiting outside the police station was not the same Linda Liu who had called me trembling the day before.

She was calmer.

Too calm.

Her eyes followed every movement I made, as if she was trying to figure out what I knew.

“Sophie,” she said softly.

I stopped.

“Mrs. Liu.”

She flinched at the coldness in my voice.

For seven years, I had called her mother.

For seven years, I had cooked for her, accompanied her to hospitals, remembered her medications, and treated her like my own family.

But yesterday, when Ethan Xu disappeared, she remembered my number before anyone else.

Not because she cared about me.

Because she needed something from me.

“You need to help us find Ethan,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Why?”

Her expression changed.

“Because you were his wife.”

I almost laughed.

“Interesting. Yesterday you told me I was no longer family.”

Silence.

The police officer standing nearby watched us carefully.

Linda lowered her voice.

“Sophie, this isn’t the time to argue.”

“No.”

I looked directly at her.

“This is exactly the time.”

The officer cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Liu, we need answers.”

She looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

She was hiding something.

The police took me back to the hotel where Ethan’s wedding preparations had happened.

The scene looked nothing like a celebration.

The flowers were still arranged.

The wedding invitations were still on the table.

The expensive decorations remained untouched.

But the atmosphere was cold.

Empty.

Like everyone had disappeared before the truth could be discovered.

The officer handed me the divorce agreement found in the trash.

I looked at the handwritten sentence again.

“If Sophie finds out what we did, we’re dead.”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“Who wrote this?”

The officer looked at me.

“That is what we are trying to determine.”

I studied the signature.

Ethan’s.

But something felt wrong.

I knew his handwriting.

Seven years together taught me things nobody else noticed.

The way he crossed certain letters.

The pressure he used when signing documents.

This signature looked similar.

But not identical.

“This isn’t his.”

Everyone turned toward me.

The officer frowned.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

I placed the paper down.

“Because Ethan always signed his name with a longer final stroke.”

I pointed.

“This one stops too early.”

The room became silent.

The officer looked at the document again.

“You think someone forged his signature?”

“I think someone wanted me to believe Ethan wrote this.”

Three hours later, the police discovered something strange.

Ethan’s phone had been turned off exactly thirty minutes after the wedding was supposed to begin.

His car was found abandoned near the city border.

No fingerprints.

No cameras.

No witnesses.

It was almost like he had planned to disappear.

Except one thing didn’t make sense.

Ethan had spent months preparing that wedding.

He had invested millions.

He had invited hundreds of guests.

Why would he vanish on the day he was supposed to start a new life?

Unless…

It was never supposed to happen.

That night, I stayed at a nearby hotel.

I should have felt satisfied.

Ethan was no longer my responsibility.

The marriage was over.

The promises were gone.

The memories belonged to the past.

But when I closed my eyes, I remembered something.

Three months before our divorce.

Ethan had come home at two in the morning.

His shirt was wet from the rain.

He stood in the doorway for a long time.

Then he said:

“Sophie.”

I looked up from my book.

“What?”

“If one day I disappear…”

I laughed.

“What kind of question is that?”

He didn’t smile.

“If something happens, don’t trust my family.”

At that time, I thought he was joking.

I thought he was trying to create drama.

So I ignored him.

Now those words came back like a warning I should have listened to.

At midnight, someone knocked on my door.

I froze.

Three long knocks.

Two short.

The same pattern from yesterday.

I slowly approached.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

I looked through the peephole.

Nobody.

My hand reached for the door handle.

Then I stopped.

Because underneath the door…

Someone had pushed an envelope inside.

I picked it up.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence written on the front:

“For Sophie. The only person Ethan trusted.”

My heartbeat increased.

I opened it.

Inside was a small USB drive.

And a photograph.

My hands started shaking.

Because in the photograph was Ethan.

But not at his wedding.

Not with his new fiancée.

He was standing inside a private office.

Beside him was Linda Liu.

And beside her…

was the woman who was supposed to marry him that day.

The three of them were looking at documents.

Documents with my name on them.

I turned the photograph over.

There was another sentence written behind it.

“Your divorce was not because Ethan stopped loving you.”

I stopped breathing.

The next line made my entire body go cold.

“He divorced you because he was trying to protect you.”

I stared at those words.

After seven years of marriage.

After watching him choose another woman.

After believing he had thrown me away…

I suddenly wondered if I had misunderstood everything.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A weak voice came through.

“Sophie…”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

“Ethan?”

There was heavy breathing on the other side.

Then he whispered:

“Don’t trust my mother.”

The call cut off.

And seconds later, another message arrived.

One location.

One sentence.

“Come alone if you want to know why your husband disappeared.”
