Part 2: The Secret Hidden Inside Leo’s Nursery

I carried Leo back into the dressing room while the world outside continued preparing for a wedding that would never happen.

The music rehearsal continued.

The guests laughed beneath the garden lights.

The flowers I had spent months choosing stood perfectly arranged, unaware that everything had already fallen apart.

But inside that small room, my entire focus was on one thing.

What had Adrian hidden from me?

Teresa closed the door behind us and carefully placed Leo in my arms.

For a moment, she looked like she was fighting with herself.

“Three nights ago, I was cleaning Leo’s room after he fell asleep,” she whispered.

“I noticed something strange behind the wooden panel near his bookshelf.”

My heart tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me immediately?”

“Because I wasn’t sure what I had found,” she replied.

“And I was afraid Adrian would know I saw it.”

Teresa reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.

It was old.

Plain.

No name.

No markings.

But I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Adrian’s.

My fingers went cold as I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

Not wedding plans.

Not family papers.

Something much worse.

The first page was a legal agreement between Adrian and a private consulting company I had never heard of.

The second page contained information about Sterling Developments.

My company.

My properties.

My financial records.

I scanned the pages faster.

Then I saw my name.

Not as the owner.

Not as the founder.

As a subject being evaluated.

There was a section titled:

“Emotional Vulnerabilities.”

I stopped reading.

“What is this?” Teresa asked quietly.

I couldn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

Adrian had been studying me.

Not loving me.

Studying me.

The document described my biggest fears.

My fear of raising Leo alone.

My guilt over his biological father leaving.

My desire to give my son a complete family.

Someone had written down every weakness I had ever confessed.

And Adrian had used them as a strategy.

Then I found the line that made my hands shake.

“Primary objective: Marriage completion before inheritance restructuring.”

I stared at the words.

Inheritance restructuring.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Adrian had never rushed the wedding because he was excited to become my husband.

He was rushing because he knew something I didn’t.

“Teresa,” I whispered.

“How did he get this information?”

She looked away.

“There’s more.”

My stomach dropped.

She reached into her bag again and pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this taped underneath the drawer in Leo’s nursery.”

I looked at the tiny device.

A piece of plastic that somehow felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

“Did you open it?”

Teresa shook her head.

“I was scared.”

I understood.

Because deep down, I was scared too.

Not of what Adrian had done.

But of what I might discover next.

I took my phone and called my personal attorney, Claire.

She answered immediately.

“Where are you? The guests are asking questions.”

“Claire, forget the wedding.”

There was a pause.

“Are you sure?”

I looked at Leo sleeping peacefully against my shoulder.

“Yes.”

My voice was calm.

“Send someone to secure every document related to Sterling Developments.”

“Freeze access to all private accounts.”

“And I need a digital investigation started immediately.”

Claire went silent.

“Elena… what happened?”

I looked at Adrian’s handwriting again.

“He wasn’t planning a marriage.”

I swallowed.

“He was planning a takeover.”

After I ended the call, Teresa stepped closer.

“There’s something else you need to know.”

I turned toward her.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“Adrian wasn’t alone.”

The room became completely silent.

“What do you mean?”

She looked toward the door.

“I saw him meeting someone in the hotel hallway yesterday.”

“Who?”

Teresa’s expression changed.

Someone had frightened her.

“It was your father’s former business partner.”

My heart stopped.

My father had died five years earlier.

And his former partner, Richard Vale, was the one person who had always warned me never to trust outsiders around the company.

But Richard had disappeared after a major disagreement with my father.

Everyone thought he had left the country.

“Why would Adrian meet him?”

Teresa lowered her voice.

“Because I heard Richard say one sentence before I walked away.”

“What sentence?”

She looked directly at me.

“He said, ‘Once Elena signs the marriage documents, the company finally comes back to us.’”

A chill moved through my entire body.

This was no longer about a greedy fiancé.

It was bigger.

Much bigger.

I looked down at Leo and realized Adrian had not just tried to steal my money.

He had tried to enter my family, my home, and my son’s life as part of a plan that had been years in the making.

Then my phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Stop searching, Elena. You have no idea who you’re fighting.”

And beneath it was a photograph.

A photograph of Adrian holding Leo.

Taken inside my own house.

Taken while I was asleep upstairs.

But the date on the image made my blood run cold.

It was taken three years before I had ever met Adrian.
