Ethan stood across the street.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The noise of the town continued around us.

People laughed.

Children ran through the street.

Vendors called out to customers.

But between Ethan and me, everything became silent.

Because after seven years…

The man I had tried so hard to forget was standing in front of me.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

Not cold.

Not distant.

Not indifferent.

Afraid.

The same man who watched me being pushed into an ambulance.

The same man who heard me beg him to save our child.

The same man who disappeared when I woke up alone in the hospital.

Now he was looking at me as if I was the one who had returned from the dead.

The little boy held the paper kitten in his hands.

“Dad?”

His small voice finally broke the silence.

Ethan lowered his gaze.

The child looked between us.

“Do you know her?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

And that hesitation told me everything.

The boy was not just a stranger.

There was something he knew.

Something he had hidden.

I picked up my table slowly.

“I should go.”

I turned away.

“Wait.”

Ethan’s voice stopped me.

Seven years ago, hearing him call my name would have made me stop.

Today, it only made me tired.

I looked back.

“What?”

His lips moved.

But no words came out.

For a man who once controlled everything around him, he suddenly looked powerless.

Finally, he whispered:

“Why are you here?”

I almost smiled.

A strange question.

After everything.

“You mean why am I alive?”

His face changed.

Because he understood.

I wasn’t talking about the town.

I was talking about the woman he left behind.

“I thought…”

He stopped.

“What did you think?”

His eyes lowered.

“I thought you would never forgive me.”

I looked at him.

“Forgive you for what?”

The question hurt him more than anger would have.

Because I knew.

He knew exactly what I meant.

The boy beside him looked confused.

“Dad, who is she?”

Ethan looked at his son.

Then back at me.

And something in his expression broke.

Before he could answer, a woman’s voice came from behind him.

“Ethan?”

I turned.

It was the woman from the morning.

His wife.

She walked toward us, holding another shopping bag.

When she saw me, her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

My heart tightened.

She knew who I was.

“Claire…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I stared at her.

“You know me?”

She became pale.

Ethan immediately stepped between us.

“Enough.”

That one word made me freeze.

Because even now…

Even after seven years…

He was still protecting someone else.

I laughed softly.

“Of course.”

My voice was calm.

“He always does.”

Ethan looked at me.

“No, Claire. It’s not what you think.”

I looked at the child.

Then at the woman beside him.

Then back at Ethan.

“I don’t think anything anymore.”

And that was the truth.

The love I had carried for him had disappeared years ago.

What remained was only a question.

A question that had followed me every night.

What happened to my baby?

I looked at Ethan.

“Tell me one thing.”

His face became serious.

“What?”

“The child I lost…”

My voice shook slightly.

“Did you ever wonder what he would have looked like?”

Ethan froze.

The little boy beside him looked at me.

And I saw something.

Pain.

Not from him.

From Ethan.

Like those words had opened a wound he had spent years hiding.

“I did.”

The answer came so quietly I almost didn’t hear it.

I stared at him.

“You did?”

His eyes turned red.

“Every day.”

I felt my fingers tighten.

“Then why didn’t you come?”

He closed his eyes.

“Because I was a coward.”

For the first time in seven years, Ethan admitted it.

Not an excuse.

Not a reason.

A truth.

“I thought you hated me.”

“I did.”

He nodded.

“I deserved that.”

Silence.

Then he looked at the little boy.

“My son knows about you.”

I froze.

“What?”

The child looked up.

Ethan swallowed.

“His name is Noah.”

My heart stopped.

“He knows?”

“He knows he had a brother.”

The world seemed to tilt.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan’s hands trembled.

“Claire…”

His voice broke.

“The baby you lost…”

I stared at him.

“He wasn’t gone.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?”

The street disappeared.

The voices disappeared.

Everything disappeared except those words.

“He survived.”

My mind went blank.

“No.”

My voice came out weak.

“No, Ethan.”

He stepped closer.

“The doctors told me there were complications.”

“Stop.”

“They told me your condition was unstable.”

“Stop.”

“And they told me the baby…”

His voice cracked.

“The baby was transferred.”

I looked at him.

“Transferred?”

A terrible feeling entered my heart.

“Where?”

Ethan looked at the ground.

And for the first time, I saw shame.

Deep regret.

A pain that had been buried for years.

“Claire…”

“Where is my son?”

He finally looked at me.

And whispered:

“He’s been with me all this time.”

I couldn’t move.

The child beside him.

The boy I saw that morning.

The boy who looked at me with curious eyes.

My hands started shaking.

“Ethan…”

My voice was almost gone.

“Are you saying…”

He nodded slowly.

“Noah is not just my son.”

A tear fell from his eyes.

“He is yours.”

I stepped backward.

Because the world I had accepted for seven years had just shattered.

My baby wasn’t dead.

My son was alive.

And the man I believed abandoned him…

Had been hiding the truth from me.

Then Ethan said the words that hurt more than anything.

“I was trying to protect him.”

I looked at him.

“From who?”

He didn’t answer.

And that silence told me there was still another secret.

A secret bigger than my lost son.

A secret that had kept a mother away from her child for seven years.

And this time…

I wasn’t leaving until I knew the truth.
