PART 2: THE TRAP ADRIAN NEVER SAW COMING

The next morning, I woke up before the alarm rang.

Not because I had slept well.

But because, after five years of marriage, for the first time, I was not waiting for my husband’s explanation.

I was waiting for the truth.

Elena was already in the kitchen when I walked downstairs.

She had prepared two cups of coffee.

“Did you sleep at all?” she asked.

I nodded.

“Enough.”

She studied my face for a few seconds.

“Lucía, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“What happened yesterday didn’t start yesterday.”

I lowered my eyes toward the coffee cup.

“I know.”

She shook her head.

“No. You still don’t know everything.”

A chill ran through me.

Elena opened the folder she had placed on the table.

“Adrián’s relationship with Irene didn’t restart by accident.”

She pulled out several documents.

“She came back to Beicheng seven months ago.”

“And Adrián?”

“He contacted her two weeks later.”

My fingers tightened around the cup.

“Are you sure?”

Elena nodded.

“We have records.”

“Messages.”

“Hotel reservations.”

“Money transfers.”

Everything inside me went quiet.

A part of me still wanted to believe there was some misunderstanding.

A part of me still wanted to believe my husband was not the man I saw holding another woman’s hand.

But there was no misunderstanding.

The truth was sitting in front of me.

“Why are you telling me this now?” I asked.

Elena took a deep breath.

“Because yesterday, when I saw them together, I realized something.”

“What?”

“He wasn’t trying to hide anymore.”

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“He was testing how far he could go.”

Those words stayed with me.

Because they were true.

Adrián had not made one mistake.

He had started believing there would never be consequences.

For years, I had been the wife who understood.

The wife who waited.

The wife who forgave.

I never checked his phone.

I never questioned his late nights.

I never demanded explanations.

Because I trusted him.

And he mistook my trust for weakness.

At ten in the morning, Adrián called me.

I watched his name appear on my screen.

I didn’t answer.

He called again.

And again.

Five times.

Finally, I sent a message.

“I’m busy.”

His reply came almost immediately.

“We need to talk.”

I looked at the message for a long time.

A few months ago, I would have dropped everything to meet him.

Now?

I simply placed the phone down.

An hour later, Adrián arrived at his parents’ house.

The moment he entered, his eyes found me.

“Lucía.”

I was sitting beside Elena.

“Adrián.”

He looked at his mother.

“Why are you here?”

Elena smiled calmly.

“This is my house.”

His jaw tightened.

“I need to speak with my wife alone.”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

Adrián looked surprised.

“Mom.”

“I’m not going to let you manipulate her when nobody else is listening.”

For the first time, I saw uncertainty appear on his face.

“Manipulate her?”

Elena opened the folder.

“Then explain this.”

She placed the documents on the table.

Adrián looked down.

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

He recognized them.

“Where did you get these?”

Elena ignored the question.

“Is it true that you transferred money to Irene’s company?”

Adrián stayed silent.

“Answer me.”

“It was an investment.”

Elena gave a small laugh.

“That’s interesting.”

“Because yesterday you told Lucía you were only helping Irene.”

Silence.

Adrián looked at me.

“Lucía, you don’t understand the situation.”

“Then explain it.”

He stepped closer.

“She was going through a difficult time.”

“And me?”

He stopped.

“What?”

I looked directly at him.

“While you were taking care of her…”

I paused.

“What was I?”

He didn’t answer.

Because that was the question he didn’t want to face.

Not whether he held Irene’s hand.

Not whether he helped her financially.

But why he had forgotten mine.

Adrián lowered his voice.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I smiled sadly.

“But you did.”

The room became silent.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And for the first time, he hesitated.

Elena noticed.

“Answer it.”

Adrián walked into the hallway.

But he didn’t realize the door remained slightly open.

Then we heard Irene’s voice.

“Adrián, have you talked to her yet?”

My heart stopped.

He answered quietly.

“Not yet.”

“You can’t keep delaying this.”

Elena and I looked at each other.

Irene continued.

“The final transfer needs to happen before the divorce.”

The world seemed to freeze.

Divorce?

Final transfer?

This was no longer just about betrayal.

There was something bigger.

Something planned.

Adrián remained silent.

Then Irene said something that made my blood run cold.

“After everything we did to make Lucía trust you, you can’t ruin everything now.”

My hands became cold.

Everything we did?

I looked at Elena.

She had heard it too.

This wasn’t a sudden mistake.

This was a plan.

Adrián ended the call and returned to the room.

But it was already too late.

Because Elena and I had heard enough.

She reached over and held my hand.

“Now the real battle begins.”

I looked at Adrián.

The man I had shared five years of my life with.

The man I believed I knew.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Irene had not returned because she wanted an old love back.

She had returned because she needed something from Adrián.

And Adrián needed something from me.

But neither of them expected one thing.

They expected the same woman who always forgave.

The same woman who stayed silent.

The same woman who accepted every excuse.

They did not expect me to fight back.

Because while they were planning how to take something from me…

I had already started discovering how to protect myself.

And the documents I was about to uncover inside Adrián’s company would reveal a secret that would change everything.

Because the betrayal I discovered was only the beginning.
