The abandoned campsite was barely visible through the darkness.

Every movement felt impossible.

Every breath felt like a battle.

But I kept crawling.

Not because I was afraid to die.

Because I refused to let Carter decide how my story ended.

The man who had spent five years calling me fragile had no idea that the woman he abandoned in the forest had survived worse things than his betrayal.

Before I became Mrs. Carter Hayes, I was Dr. Evelyn Hart.

I had spent years studying toxins, plant compounds, and the ways nature could both heal and destroy.

I knew exactly what aconite did to the human body.

I knew the symptoms.

The numbness.

The irregular heartbeat.

The weakness.

The illusion that the victim was simply suffering from a sudden medical event.

Carter had chosen carefully.

But he had made one mistake.

He had underestimated me.

I reached the remains of the old campsite and used the last strength in my body to pull myself against a fallen tree.

My hands were shaking.

My vision blurred.

The poison was already spreading.

A discarded emergency whistle.

Probably left behind by an old hiker.

I almost laughed.

Even in the darkest moment, the universe had a strange way of leaving a door open.

I pressed it.

Nothing.

Again.

The sound was weak.

Almost impossible to hear.

But I kept trying.

Because somewhere beyond those trees, someone had to exist.

Someone had to hear me.


Three hours earlier…

Carter had stood in front of our guests pretending to be a devastated husband.

He cried.

He shouted my name.

He held my hand.

Everyone saw the perfect performance.

Nobody saw him disappear into the garage twenty minutes later.

Nobody saw him remove the tracker from my car.

Nobody saw Vanessa waiting for him.

But I had.

Not because I was suspicious.

Because two weeks earlier, I had found something in his office.

A second phone.

Hidden behind old financial documents.

At first, I thought it belonged to work.

Then I saw the messages.

Carter.

Vanessa.

Months of conversations.

Months of planning.

The house.

The insurance policy.

My death.

Everything.

I had stood there holding the phone, unable to believe the man sleeping beside me every night could write such cold words about my life.

But I didn’t confront him.

Because sometimes the smartest move is letting someone believe they have won.

So I watched.

I waited.

And I prepared.

What Carter didn’t know was that I had already changed the beneficiary information on my insurance policy three months earlier.

What he didn’t know was that the fifty-million-dollar policy he dreamed about collecting no longer existed for him.

What he didn’t know was that every financial document in our marriage had been reviewed by my attorney.

And what he definitely didn’t know…

was that I had installed a security backup system throughout our new house.

Including audio recording.

Including the kitchen.

Including the garage.

Including the moment he confessed everything.


A distant sound reached my ears.

A car.

I froze.

For a second, hope appeared.

Then disappeared.

Because I recognized the engine.

Carter.

Why was he back?

The headlights cut through the trees.

I held my breath.

The car stopped several meters away.

The driver’s door opened.

Carter stepped out.

But he wasn’t alone.

Vanessa followed.

She wore a long coat and expensive heels completely unsuitable for the forest.

She looked annoyed.

“Are you sure she won’t be found?”

Carter laughed.

“Evelyn?”

He said my name like it was a joke.

“She can barely walk. By morning, this will look like an accident.”

Vanessa looked around nervously.

“What if someone discovers us?”

“They won’t.”

Carter smiled.

“I already deleted everything.”

My heart pounded.

Not from fear.

From anger.

They had returned to make sure I was dead.

Carter walked closer.

“I told you she was a problem.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She always thought she was smarter than everyone.”

He laughed.

“She thought being educated made her untouchable.”

I stayed perfectly still.

The same man who mocked my intelligence was now standing in front of me, confirming every detail I needed.

Then Vanessa said something that changed everything.

“Did you really think she wouldn’t discover the trust documents?”

My eyes opened slightly.

Trust documents?

Carter’s expression changed.

“Keep your voice down.”

“No. I’m tired of hiding.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You promised me everything.”

“I will.”

“The company?”

“Yes.”

“The house?”

“Yes.”

“And the research files?”

Silence.

My entire body went cold.

Research files?

What were they talking about?

Carter looked around.

“We discuss that somewhere else.”

But it was too late.

I had heard enough.

They weren’t only after my insurance money.

They wanted something else.

Something I had protected for years.


Suddenly, Carter’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Impossible.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

He answered.

A voice came through.

A voice I recognized.

My attorney.

“Mr. Hayes, we need to discuss the legal notice you just received.”

Carter froze.

“What legal notice?”

“The one regarding attempted insurance fraud, financial manipulation, and recorded confession evidence.”

The color disappeared from his face.

Vanessa stepped back.

“What is happening?”

My attorney continued.

“And Mr. Hayes…”

A pause.

“Your wife is alive.”

Carter looked around the forest.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like a predator realizing the prey had disappeared.

Then his eyes landed on me.

For the first time that night…

Carter Hayes looked afraid.

I pushed myself upright against the tree.

My voice was weak.

But clear.

“You should have checked who you were leaving behind.”

The forest became silent.

Vanessa gasped.

Carter took one step backward.

Because in that moment, he finally understood.

He didn’t abandon a helpless wife.

He created his own worst enemy.

And tomorrow morning, when the world discovered what happened inside that forest…

Carter Hayes would learn the most expensive lesson of his life:
