PART 2: The Woman Who Finally Chose Herself

The next morning, Lucas woke up believing everything was still the same.

That was the strangest part.

He walked into the kitchen wearing a relaxed expression, kissed my forehead like he always did, and asked:

“Did you sleep well?”

I looked at him.

The man who had stood on a stage the night before and promised another woman a future.

The man who had watched me smile while everyone expected me to break.

And I realized something.

Lucas didn’t think he had hurt me.

Because in his mind…

I would always understand.

I would always forgive.

I would always stay.

“Yes,” I answered.

A simple word.

Nothing more.

He smiled.

“I knew you would be reasonable.”

Reasonable.

That was the word he used whenever he wanted me to accept something unfair.

I lowered my eyes and continued preparing breakfast.

But inside…

The woman who had spent three years saving money for their future was already gone.

Two weeks later, my acceptance email arrived.

Harvard had accepted my application for the visiting scholar program.

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Not because I doubted myself.

Because I suddenly remembered the old Valeria.

The woman who once believed her entire world could fit inside a relationship.

The woman who canceled opportunities because Lucas needed support.

The woman who turned down an overseas conference because he said:

“After marriage, we should focus on building our life together.”

At that time, I thought he was talking about love.

Now I understood.

He meant my life should become smaller so his could become bigger.

That evening, Lucas came home carrying flowers.

The same kind he used to bring me when we were dating.

White roses.

My favorite.

For a moment, I almost laughed.

Because even his apologies were predictable.

“Valeria.”

He placed the flowers on the table.

“I know the announcement surprised you.”

I didn’t answer.

He sat beside me.

“Emma is just someone who needs help.”

“She’s talented.”

“Her family situation is complicated.”

I looked at him.

“And mine?”

He froze.

“What?”

“My family situation.”

He frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

I smiled.

“Nothing.”

Because I finally understood.

People only notice your sacrifices when they lose access to them.

Lucas reached for my hand.

“I know you were uncomfortable, but you have to trust me.”

Trust.

Another word he used when he wanted me to ignore what was obvious.

I gently pulled my hand away.

“I do trust you.”

He looked relieved.

Then I continued:

“I trust you enough to believe you showed me exactly who you are.”

His expression changed.

“Valeria…”

But I stood up.

“I applied for a visiting scholar position at Harvard.”

The room became silent.

Lucas stared at me.

“You did what?”

“I was accepted.”

A few seconds passed.

Then he laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he didn’t believe me.

“Harvard?”

“Valeria, be serious.”

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Not because of the words.

Because it reminded me of something.

He had never doubted himself.

Only me.

“I am serious.”

He stood up.

“But what about us?”

I looked at him.

Finally.

Really looked at him.

“The question is…”

“What about me?”

Lucas became quiet.

For years, every decision had been about him.

His company.

His dreams.

His reputation.

His future.

And I had convinced myself that supporting him was love.

But love should not require one person to disappear.

A month later, I started preparing for my departure.

I didn’t announce it publicly.

I didn’t create drama.

I simply moved quietly.

The way someone leaves a place they already know they no longer belong.

Lucas noticed.

Of course he did.

The night before I left, he stood at the bedroom door.

“You are really going?”

I folded the last piece of clothing.

“Yes.”

“Because of Emma?”

I stopped.

Then I turned around.

“No.”

“Because of me.”

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I spent years proving I was worthy of standing beside you.”

I picked up my suitcase.

“But I forgot I was already someone worth standing beside.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“Valeria, we can fix this.”

I smiled softly.

A sad smile.

The same smile I had given him at the engagement party.

Except this time…

It wasn’t pretending.

“No, Lucas.”

“You can fix what you broke.”

“But I am done waiting for you to realize my value.”

The next morning, I left.

No tears.

No final argument.

No dramatic goodbye.

Just a suitcase.

A passport.

And a woman who finally chose herself.

Three months later, I was standing on the Harvard campus when my phone received a message.

From Lucas.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But I opened it.

Only one sentence appeared:

“Valeria, Emma wasn’t the reason I lost you.”

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

“I just found out what you really owned.”

My expression changed.

Because there was something Lucas had discovered.

Something about my identity.

Something I had never told him.

And the man who once thought I needed him…

was finally realizing that losing me was the biggest mistake of his life.
