PART 2: THE DAY ADRIAN WOLFE LOST HIS LAST DEFENSE

The room became completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Not when Gabriel Cross placed the folder on the table.

Not when Adrian Wolfe saw his son in another man’s arms.

Not even when Serena looked at him with eyes that no longer contained any love.

Only hatred.

And disappointment.

“Reopen Annie’s file?”

Adrian’s voice was low.

Almost threatening.

Gabriel did not move.

“Yes.”

“After four years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Gabriel looked at the child in his arms.

Then at Serena.

“Because some people spent four years trying to erase a little girl’s death.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“This is a family matter.”

“No.”

Gabriel interrupted.

“It stopped being a family matter when a child died and people used their power to hide the truth.”

The retired officers around them began whispering.

They had all heard rumors.

But nobody knew the complete story.

Nobody knew that the perfect General Wolfe family had a secret buried under years of silence.

Adrian clenched his fists.

“Be careful with your words.”

Gabriel smiled slightly.

“I spent my entire career being careful with my words.”

“That is why I disappeared.”

“Because I refused to write a false report.”

Adrian’s face changed.

For the first time, there was fear.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Serena saw it.

And she understood.

He remembered.

Four years ago.

After Annie’s death, everyone told Serena to accept reality.

They told her it was an accident.

They told her no one was responsible.

But Serena knew something.

A mother always knows when something is wrong.

The official report had too many gaps.

The camera near the room stopped working exactly when Annie was locked inside.

The security record was incomplete.

The witnesses changed their statements.

And the person who benefited most from the silence…

Was Vanessa Shaw.

Gabriel had been the only person who believed her.

He secretly investigated.

He found irregularities.

He discovered that the evidence had been manipulated.

Then he disappeared from the military.

Because powerful people did not want the truth.

But Gabriel never stopped searching.

Adrian looked at Serena.

“Is this what you wanted?”

Serena frowned.

“What?”

“To bring another man here and attack me?”

She stared at him.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He still thought this was about revenge.

“No, Adrian.”

Her voice was calm.

“I wanted my daughter’s truth.”

“That is all I ever wanted.”

His eyes moved toward the child.

The little boy was hiding against Gabriel’s shoulder.

Afraid.

The same way Annie had been afraid.

For a second, something painful flashed across Adrian’s face.

A memory.

A little girl’s voice.

Daddy.

But it disappeared.

He immediately pushed it away.

“No.”

Serena looked at him.

“No?”

“This is impossible.”

Gabriel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Investigation records.

And a small audio file.

“I think you should listen.”

Adrian didn’t want to.

But everyone was watching.

Gabriel pressed play.

A child’s frightened voice filled the room.

“Mom…”

The sound froze Serena completely.

Even after four years.

She recognized it.

Annie.

“I’m scared.”

A second voice appeared.

Vanessa.

“Stop crying.”

“Your mother always protects you too much.”

Then another sound.

A door closing.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stood completely still.

Because this was the first time he heard his daughter’s fear.

Not through Serena.

Not through a report.

Directly.

His daughter’s voice.

“Where did you get this?”

Adrian’s voice trembled.

Gabriel answered:

“From the backup system.”

“The one your people forgot existed.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For four years.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

The question escaped before he could stop himself.

Everyone became silent.

Serena looked at him.

And for the first time…

She almost laughed.

Because Adrian still didn’t understand.

“Why didn’t he tell you?”

She stepped forward.

“Because every time someone tried to tell you the truth…”

“You chose not to listen.”

Adrian looked away.

Because that was true.

Vanessa had always been the person he defended.

Serena had always been the person he doubted.

That night, Adrian went to find Vanessa.

She was waiting in her apartment.

Still confident.

Still elegant.

“You saw her.”

Adrian entered.

His expression was cold.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“Tell you what?”

“About the recording.”

Silence.

Then she laughed softly.

“So he finally found it.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Adrian.”

Her voice became gentle.

“Don’t pretend you care now.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“You chose me.”

“You chose me every single time.”

She stepped closer.

“Even when Serena cried.”

“Even when Annie died.”

“You chose me.”

Those words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

Not because Vanessa said them.

Because he remembered.

Every choice.

Every moment.

Every time he protected Vanessa instead of his own family.

The next morning, the investigation officially reopened.

The Wolfe family’s influence could no longer stop it.

Too many people had seen the evidence.

Too many people had heard Annie’s voice.

And this time…

Serena was not alone.

Months later, the truth finally came out.

Vanessa was removed from her position.

The officials involved in hiding evidence faced investigation.

And Adrian Wolfe…

Lost everything that once made him untouchable.

His reputation.

His authority.

The respect of the people around him.

But the hardest punishment was not losing power.

It was losing Serena forever.

One year later, Adrian saw Serena again.

She was walking with Gabriel and their son.

The little boy was laughing.

Happy.

Safe.

Something Annie never got to be.

Adrian stood there.

Watching from a distance.

Serena noticed him.

But she didn’t stop.

She only said:

“Come on.”

And walked away.

For the first time, Adrian didn’t chase her.

Because he finally understood.

Some mistakes cannot be corrected.

Some apologies arrive too late.

And some people you destroy…

You lose forever.

The little girl he failed to protect became the truth that destroyed his perfect world.

And the woman he once believed would always love him…

Was finally free.
