PART 2: THE DAY BASTIEN KROLL LOST CONTROL

For three years, Bastien Kroll believed that apartment 1208 was his perfect secret.

A place nobody visited.

A place nobody questioned.

A place where he could live another life while pretending to be the perfect husband.

But he made one mistake.

He forgot that the apartment still belonged to me.

And he forgot that every secret eventually leaves a trace.

The next morning, I woke up early.

Not because I couldn’t sleep.

Because I had already spent too many nights trusting a man who was lying beside me.

Selma arrived at my house at eight.

She placed several folders on the table.

“Renata.”

Her expression was serious.

“We need to be careful.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“You cannot confront him yet.”

“I won’t.”

“Good.”

She opened the first folder.

“Apartment ownership.”

She looked at me.

“Your parents paid eighty percent of the initial purchase.”

“Yes.”

“Bastien’s name was added later.”

I nodded.

The irony almost made me laugh.

The apartment was supposed to be the beginning of our marriage.

The first place where we would build our future.

Instead, it became the place where he built another woman’s life.

Selma continued.

“Building records show that someone has been entering apartment 1208 regularly.”

“Who?”

She looked at the papers.

“Mostly Bastien.”

“And Nadine?”

Selma turned another page.

“Her access was registered eleven months ago.”

Eleven months.

Almost the exact moment when Nadine disappeared from company events.

The exact moment Bastien started coming home later.

The exact moment he started saying:

“The project is very stressful.”

I smiled bitterly.

The project.

Of course.

There was always a project.

That afternoon, Bastien came home.

He looked completely normal.

That was the part that shocked me.

He kissed my forehead.

“How was your day?”

I looked at him.

The same eyes.

The same voice.

The same man who had carried another woman out of our apartment the night before.

“Fine.”

He smiled.

“I’ll probably be busy again tonight.”

“Another urgent project?”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“Of course.”

He didn’t notice the meaning behind my words.

Because guilty people often believe they are safe when nobody accuses them.

He sat beside me.

Then he suddenly said:

“By the way, the electricity issue was probably just old wiring.”

I looked at him.

“Oh?”

“Yes.”

“The maintenance team checked it.”

I almost laughed.

He was lying again.

But this time, I didn’t feel hurt.

I felt nothing.

That scared me more.

Because love usually dies slowly.

But sometimes, one moment is enough.

For me, that moment was seeing my husband carry another woman out of the home my parents helped buy.

Three days later, Selma called me.

“We found something.”

I immediately sat up.

“What?”

“The apartment isn’t only being used as a residence.”

“What do you mean?”

“There are medical records.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Whose?”

“Nadine Ferris.”

Silence.

“She registered that address as her temporary residence during pregnancy.”

I closed my eyes.

Pregnancy.

That word made everything clearer.

Bastien wasn’t helping a colleague.

He wasn’t protecting a friend.

He had created another family.

While keeping me as the wife nobody knew was suffering.

“Renata.”

Selma’s voice became softer.

“Are you okay?”

I looked at the wedding photo on the shelf.

Seven years.

Seven years of marriage.

Seven years of believing that problems could be solved if two people tried.

“I am.”

And strangely…

I was.

Because the woman who would have broken down had already disappeared.

That night, Bastien received a call.

I was sitting across from him when his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Nadine.

He stood up immediately.

“I need to answer this.”

I smiled.

“Go ahead.”

He looked surprised.

“You don’t mind?”

“No.”

Because I finally understood something.

A person who wants to betray you does not need permission.

And a person who truly loves you does not need excuses.

He walked into another room.

I waited.

Not to spy.

Not to listen.

Just to confirm something.

Five minutes later, he returned.

His face was tense.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

I nodded.

“Nothing always happens when it involves Nadine.”

His body froze.

The silence lasted three seconds.

But those three seconds were enough.

He knew.

I knew.

And for the first time, he realized I was not as unaware as he thought.

“What are you talking about?”

I looked at him calmly.

“The electricity bill.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“The apartment.”

The color disappeared from his face.

“Renata…”

“Don’t worry.”

I stood up.

“I don’t need an explanation tonight.”

He followed me.

“Wait.”

“No.”

“Listen to me.”

I turned around.

“Bastien.”

My voice was quiet.

“Three years ago, if you told me you had a problem, I would have believed you.”

“Two years ago, I would have searched for reasons to forgive you.”

“One year ago, I would have blamed myself.”

I looked directly at him.

“But today?”

I smiled.

“Today I only want the truth.”

He became silent.

Because he knew the truth was no longer something he could hide.

The next morning, I received an unexpected visitor.

Nadine.

She stood outside my door.

Her hand rested protectively over her pregnant belly.

“I think we need to talk.”

I looked at her.

The woman who had lived in my apartment.

The woman who had slept in my bed.

The woman carrying my husband’s child.

“Come in.”

She looked surprised.

Maybe she expected anger.

Maybe she expected a scene.

But I had no reason to give her that satisfaction.

She sat down.

Then she said:

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I poured tea.

“Everyone says that.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Bastien said your marriage was already over.”

I smiled.

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

“He said you two were only staying together because of habit.”

I looked at her.

“And did you believe him?”

She was silent.

That silence was the answer.

Because deep down, she knew.

A man who lies to his wife can lie to another woman too.

I placed a document on the table.

Nadine looked at it.

“What is this?”

“The apartment ownership.”

Her face changed.

“According to the law, you have been living in my property without permission.”

She became nervous.

“Renata…”

I stood up.

“Don’t worry.”

“I am not here to fight with you.”

“I’m here to end a marriage.”

Her eyes widened.

Because she finally understood.

I was not trying to get Bastien back.

I was removing him from my life.

That evening, Bastien came home.

The divorce papers were waiting on the table.

He stared at them.

“Renata.”

“Yes.”

“Are you serious?”

I nodded.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not because he lost a wife.

But because he lost control.

“You know this isn’t what you want.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“This is exactly what I want.”

He stepped closer.

“After seven years?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

I smiled.

“Exactly because of everything.”

Bastien looked at me.

And finally understood.

The biggest mistake he made was not the apartment.

Not Nadine.

Not the child.

The biggest mistake was believing I would always stay.

But the woman who waited for him for seven years…

Had finally stopped waiting.
