PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED BEING HIS SHADOW

The next morning, Adrian woke up expecting everything to return to normal.

That was his biggest mistake.

For years, he had believed that no matter how far he pushed me away, I would always be there waiting.

He believed my love was something permanent.

Something he could ignore without consequences.

But when he walked into the kitchen that morning, he found something he had never seen before.

Silence.

Not the painful silence from our cold war.

A different kind.

A peaceful silence.

I was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee, reviewing apartment listings on my laptop.

Adrian stopped at the doorway.

For several seconds, he didn’t say anything.

His eyes moved from my suitcase near the wall to the documents beside my computer.

“You are really leaving?”

I looked up calmly.

“Yes.”

He seemed surprised by how easily I answered.

Maybe he expected anger.

Maybe tears.

Maybe another argument where we would both say things we didn’t mean and then pretend nothing happened.

But there was nothing left to fight for.

“When?” he asked.

“As soon as I find a place.”

His jaw tightened.

“Maya, we still need to discuss the divorce.”

I nodded.

“We will.”

That answer bothered him.

Because there was no emotion behind it.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Just acceptance.

Adrian pulled out the chair across from me.

“You weren’t like this before.”

I looked at him.

“Before what?”

“Before you stopped caring.”

I almost laughed.

Stopped caring?

That was the one thing he had never understood.

I cared too much.

I cared when he forgot our anniversary because Olivia needed help at an event.

I cared when he canceled our vacation because Olivia’s production schedule changed.

I cared when the entire world saw them together and I was the only person expected to stay quiet.

I cared until there was nothing left inside me.

“Adrian,” I said softly.

“Do you know what the hardest part was?”

He looked at me.

“It wasn’t Olivia.”

His expression changed slightly.

“It wasn’t even the rumors.”

I closed my laptop.

“The hardest part was realizing that every time I needed you, I had to compete for a place in your life.”

He looked away.

For once, he had no immediate answer.

A week later, I moved into a small apartment across the city.

It wasn’t luxurious.

It wasn’t anything like the house Adrian bought.

But when I opened the door for the first time, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.

Freedom.

No memories in every corner.

No waiting for someone who might not come home.

No wondering if I was important enough.

Just me.

For the first time in a long time, I started rebuilding my life.

I returned to work.

I spent time with friends I had neglected.

I learned how to enjoy ordinary days without checking my phone every five minutes.

And then, two weeks after I left, Adrian called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something in me wanted to know why.

“Maya.”

His voice sounded tired.

“What happened?”

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“The wedding is this weekend.”

I smiled faintly.

“The one you wanted me to attend as your wife?”

Another silence.

“Yes.”

“And why are you calling me?”

His breathing became heavier.

“Because I need you there.”

I closed my eyes.

Need.

That word used to mean everything to me.

Now it only sounded empty.

“Adrian, you need a wife for appearances.”

“That’s not true.”

“Then why not ask Olivia?”

He became quiet.

That silence told me everything.

I continued.

“You don’t want me there because you love me. You want me there because people are watching.”

“Maya…”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

But this time, he heard the finality.

“I spent years standing beside you while everyone believed I was the lucky one.”

I looked around my small apartment.

“But I was the only person in that marriage who didn’t feel chosen.”

The line stayed silent.

Then Adrian whispered:

“I made mistakes.”

I looked down.

“Yes, you did.”

“I can fix them.”

I shook my head even though he couldn’t see me.

“Some things cannot be fixed after they are broken.”

He didn’t speak.

Then he asked the question I never expected.

“Do you really not love me anymore?”

The old Maya would have cried.

The old Maya would have searched for a reason to forgive him.

But I wasn’t that woman anymore.

“I loved you more than myself.”

I paused.

“That’s why I lost myself.”

My voice softened.

“But I finally found myself again.”

The call ended shortly after.

I thought that was the end.

Until the wedding day arrived.

I was at a coffee shop when my phone started exploding with messages.

Pictures.

Videos.

News.

Adrian Quinn’s wedding had become the biggest topic online.

But not because of the ceremony.

Because five minutes before the event began, Adrian had stopped everything.

The bride was waiting.

The guests were seated.

And Adrian walked onto the stage holding a document.

The same document I had signed months earlier.

The divorce agreement.

Everyone expected him to announce something about the marriage.

Instead, he said:

“Before today continues, there is something everyone needs to know.”

The room became silent.

He looked directly at the cameras.

“My marriage with Maya Quinn ended because I failed to appreciate the person who stood beside me when nobody else did.”

My fingers froze around my phone.

Then he said the words that shocked everyone:

“The woman I wanted to pretend was still my wife today is the same woman I pushed away until she stopped waiting for me.”

The video ended there.

But then another message arrived.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

“Maya, you need to see what Olivia just revealed.”

I opened the attachment.

And my entire body went cold.

Because inside the video was Olivia Lane.

And she was saying my name.

“Everything Adrian believes about me is a lie.”
