PART 2: The Night Everyone Finally Saw The Truth

I kept the phone in my hand.

The line was still connected.

My father-in-law did not hang up.

Neither did I.

For some reason, that small action gave me a strange sense of calm.

Because for the first time that night, I was no longer standing alone outside that bedroom door.

A few minutes later, I heard footsteps.

The bedroom door opened.

Chu Du walked out.

His expression was already impatient.

“Ha Ninh, who are you calling this late?”

I looked at him.

“Dad.”

His face changed immediately.

“My dad?”

“Yes.”

A moment of silence.

Then his voice lowered.

“Why did you call him?”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I suddenly realized something.

He wasn’t asking why I was hurt.

He wasn’t asking why I was sleeping on the sofa.

He was asking why I told someone.

“Because I thought someone should know.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“Know what?”

I looked toward the closed bedroom door.

“Know that tonight, my husband brought another woman home and asked me to leave our bedroom.”

His expression became colder.

“You’re making it sound worse than it is.”

There it was again.

The sentence people used when they wanted you to doubt your own feelings.

“Is it not what happened?”

“She was sick.”

“She was your secretary.”

“So?”

“So she is not my responsibility.”

Chu Du’s jaw tightened.

“You’re being unreasonable.”

I closed my eyes for a second.

Six years.

Six years of marriage.

And tonight, he was still using that word.

Unreasonable.

The phone remained silent in my hand.

But I knew my father-in-law was listening.

Then Chu Du’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression immediately changed.

Dad.

He answered.

“Dad?”

The voice on the other end was not loud.

But even from a distance, I could hear the seriousness.

“Chu Du.”

“Yes.”

“Are you at home?”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Who is sleeping in your bedroom?”

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

“Dad, this is not what you think.”

“I asked you a question.”

Silence.

Chu Du looked uncomfortable for the first time that night.

“Lin Xiaowei.”

The other side became completely quiet.

Then my father-in-law asked:

“And where is your wife?”

Chu Du glanced at the sofa.

“Living room.”

The next words came immediately.

“Bring your wife back to that bedroom.”

Chu Du froze.

“Dad—”

“Now.”

His voice was so firm that even Chu Du stopped arguing.

“I don’t care what excuse you have.”

“You brought a female employee into your home at midnight.”

“You put her in your marriage bedroom.”

“And your wife is sleeping outside?”

Nobody spoke.

The room became painfully quiet.

Chu Du looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something close to shame in his eyes.

But it was too late.

I had already spent the last hour feeling exactly what I needed to feel.

Unimportant.

Unprotected.

Alone.

“Dad, she was only here because she was sick.”

My father-in-law replied:

“Then you should have taken her to a hospital.”

“Or called her family.”

“Or arranged a hotel.”

“You had options.”

A pause.

“But you chose the one option that humiliated your wife.”

Chu Du lowered his head.

I looked away.

Because those words hurt.

Not because they were harsh.

Because they were true.

The next morning, my father-in-law arrived at our house before breakfast.

He did not call first.

He simply entered after Chu Du opened the door.

Lin Xiaowei was already dressed.

She stood near the entrance looking embarrassed.

“Uncle Zhou…”

My father-in-law looked at her.

Then at Chu Du.

Then at me.

His expression became complicated.

“Ha Ninh.”

I stood up.

“Dad.”

He looked at the blanket folded neatly on the sofa.

His eyes darkened.

“You really slept here?”

I nodded.

“I’m fine.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“You keep saying that whenever someone hurts you.”

Nobody answered.

Then he turned toward his son.

“Chu Du.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know what your wife did when I was hospitalized?”

Chu Du froze.

“Dad…”

“She drove me to every appointment.”

“She brought meals every day.”

“She sat outside my room when you were away on business.”

My father-in-law pointed toward me.

“She treated me like her own father.”

Then he looked at Lin Xiaowei.

“And last night, you let this woman sleep in your wife’s place.”

Lin Xiaowei’s face turned pale.

“It wasn’t like that.”

My father-in-law looked at her.

“Then explain what it was like.”

She opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Because there was no explanation that sounded right.

Chu Du stepped forward.

“Dad, don’t blame her.”

That sentence changed everything.

My father-in-law stared at him.

“Still protecting her?”

Chu Du became silent.

Then his father said quietly:

“I raised you better than this.”

Those words seemed to hit harder than anger.

Because Chu Du finally realized.

This was no longer a small argument between husband and wife.

Everyone could see what had happened.

That afternoon, my father-in-law asked me to come to his house.

Before I left, Chu Du stopped me.

“Ha Ninh.”

I turned.

He looked tired.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

I looked at him.

“But you did.”

He had no answer.

Then he asked:

“Do you really think I would betray our marriage?”

I stared at him for a long time.

The old me would have said no.

The old me would have defended him.

But that woman was exhausted.

So I only said:

“I think you already forgot what protecting a marriage looks like.”

I walked away.

That night, my father-in-law handed me a document.

I looked confused.

“What is this?”

He sighed.

“Something Chu Du should have told you a long time ago.”

I opened the file.

The first page made my hands freeze.

Because it was not about Lin Xiaowei.

It was about a company transfer.

And my name was written on it.

My father-in-law looked at me seriously.

“Ha Ninh, before you decide what to do next…”
