PART 2: Five Days After I Left, My Husband Finally Discovered Who He Had Lost

When Ethan Lu opened the empty hospital room, he thought it was a mistake.

A cruel joke.

A misunderstanding.

Because in his mind, I was still the same woman who waited.

The same woman who answered every call.

The same woman who forgave every absence.

The same woman who always stayed.

He stood in the doorway for several seconds, unable to move.

The room was clean.

Too clean.

The flowers he had forgotten to send were not there.

The clothes I had packed for the hospital were gone.

The small baby blankets were gone.

Even the documents on the bedside table had disappeared.

Only one thing remained.

A handwritten note.

Ethan picked it up.

His fingers tightened as he read the words.

“Thank you for giving me seven years of your life.”

That was all.

No accusation.

No anger.

No tears.

And somehow, that hurt him more than any insult could have.

His assistant, who had been standing outside, quietly said:

—Mr. Lu… Mrs. Lu left with the babies five days ago.

Ethan looked up sharply.

—What did you say?

—She was discharged early. She arranged everything herself.

Five days.

The number echoed in his mind.

Five days ago, he had still been in another city.

Five days ago, he had been sitting beside another woman, telling her not to cry.

Five days ago, he had sent me a message:

“I’ll come when I’m done here.”

And I had replied:

“Everything is fine. Don’t worry.”

He had thought those words meant I was waiting.

He didn’t understand.

They were goodbye.

When Ethan returned to the Lu family mansion, everyone expected him to be angry.

They expected him to demand answers.

Instead, he walked directly to my old office.

The room that once belonged to Lawyer Claire Ye.

The room I had abandoned after becoming Mrs. Lu.

For the first time in years, Ethan noticed something.

There were no traces of me.

No legal books.

No case files.

No awards.

No signs of the woman I used to be.

Because Claire Ye had disappeared slowly.

And he had never noticed.

On the desk was a folder.

His name was written on it.

Ethan opened it.

Inside were documents.

Not divorce papers.

Not accusations.

A complete record of our marriage.

Assets.

Investments.

Company shares.

Every decision he had made without consulting me.

Every transfer.

Every agreement.

Everything I had protected as his wife.

But the last page made his face change.

It was a legal document.

Signed by me.

A separation agreement prepared one month before the birth.

Ethan stared at the signature.

Impossible.

He had never seen it.

Because I had never asked for his permission.

That was the difference between Claire Ye and Mrs. Lu.

Mrs. Lu waited for approval.

Claire Ye made decisions.

Three days later, Ethan finally found me.

Not because I wanted him to.

Because he discovered where the babies had been registered.

A private residence outside the city.

A place far away from the Lu family’s influence.

When he arrived, I was sitting in the garden.

One baby slept beside me.

The other two were inside with the nurse.

For a moment, Ethan simply looked at me.

Not the wife he remembered.

Not the woman who followed him.

A different person.

Calm.

Independent.

Free.

—Claire.

I looked up.

It was the first time in years he had called me that.

Not Mrs. Lu.

Claire.

The woman he met before the marriage.

—Why are you here?

His expression became complicated.

—You left.

I smiled slightly.

—Yes.

He looked at the babies.

—You took my children.

My expression changed.

—No.

I stood up.

—I took my children away from a place where their mother was disappearing.

That sentence hurt him.

Because he knew it was true.

—Why didn’t you tell me?

I looked at him.

—Would you have listened?

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because we both knew the answer.

For years, I had tried.

I had told him I was tired.

I had told him I missed my career.

I had told him I felt like a decoration in my own marriage.

Every time, he had said the same thing.

“You have everything.”

But he never asked if everything was enough.

Then came the question I had expected.

—Was there someone else?

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even after everything.

That was what he feared most.

Not losing me.

Losing control.

—No, Ethan.

I looked directly at him.

—There was finally someone else.

His face changed.

—Who?

I answered quietly:

—Me.

Silence.

—The person I was before I became your wife.

For the first time, Ethan looked ashamed.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Ashamed.

The truth about his lover eventually came out.

Her name was not just connected to Ethan.

She had been involved in several business scandals.

The relationship that Ethan thought was private was actually part of a larger problem.

Someone had been using him.

And for the first time, Ethan understood what it felt like to be ignored.

But I was no longer there to save him.

The old Claire would have investigated.

The old Claire would have found evidence.

The old Claire would have protected him.

But that woman was gone.

When Ethan asked for my help, I simply said:

—Hire a lawyer.

He looked at me.

Like he couldn’t believe those words came from me.

Then he understood.

I was finally treating him like everyone else.

Like a client.

Not like my husband.

Six months later, my law firm reopened.

The sign outside read:

CLAIRE YE LEGAL CONSULTING.

No mention of Lu.

No family name.

No husband.

Just me.

My first case after returning was a major corporate dispute.

The same type of case where Ethan and I first met.

The media called it my comeback.

But I didn’t see it that way.

I wasn’t coming back.

I was starting again.

One evening, I received a letter from Ethan.

I opened it.

There were only a few lines.

“I finally understand why you disappeared.”

“I thought losing you meant losing my wife.”

“But I lost the woman who made me better.”

“I am sorry.”

I read it twice.

Then folded it.

I didn’t hate him.

I didn’t love him anymore either.

Some people are not destroyed by betrayal.

They are awakened by it.

The woman who left the hospital five days after giving birth was not running away.

She was returning to herself.

And Ethan Lu finally understood the cruelest truth.

He didn’t lose Claire Ye when she walked out the door.

He lost her years earlier…

Every time he asked her to become someone else.
