Part 2: THE DAY ETHAN LU RETURNED FROM THE DEAD AND LOST EVERYTHING

The lawyer arrived the next morning at nine.

Natalie Chen had been my friend for years.

She was not the kind of person who reacted emotionally.

She was the kind of woman who could read a contract, find one hidden sentence, and destroy an entire strategy with a single question.

But when she saw the documents spread across my table, even she became silent.

The fake death announcement.

The so-called final letter.

The divorce preparation documents Ethan had secretly started months earlier.

And the ticket to the Maldives.

She looked at me.

“Claire.”

I didn’t answer.

“Are you sure about this?”

I looked down at my belly.

My son had been quiet since last night.

Almost as if he knew this was no longer just about revenge.

It was about truth.

“Yes.”

Natalie picked up the ticket.

“The flight accident happened yesterday.”

I nodded.

“And this ticket shows Ethan and Yvette left on the same day.”

She frowned.

“Which means…”

“He never boarded the plane.”

The room became silent.

For a moment, I felt everything again.

The panic.

The grief.

The pain of believing I had lost my husband and the father of my child.

All of it had been manufactured.

A performance.

A lie.

Natalie opened the accounting books.

Her expression became colder with every page.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“These aren’t personal accounts.”

She turned the pages toward me.

“They are company transfers.”

I looked closer.

My hands slowly tightened.

Money had been moved through several accounts.

Hidden payments.

Fake investment projects.

Funds transferred before Ethan’s supposed accident.

“How much?”

Natalie looked at the numbers.

“More than twenty million.”

The voice inside my head suddenly returned.

—Mom.

I almost smiled despite everything.

“What?”

—Now I can officially say Dad is terrible.

I covered my mouth to stop myself from laughing.

Natalie looked confused.

“Are you okay?”

I quickly shook my head.

“Yes.”

My son had the strangest timing.

Even before he was born, he already knew how to make me feel less afraid.

Natalie continued.

“There is something else.”

She pulled out a document.

“Ethan changed his life insurance beneficiary three weeks before the accident.”

I froze.

“To whom?”

She looked at me.

“Yvette Yu.”

My heart sank.

Not because of the money.

But because every piece was beginning to connect.

The fake death.

The money transfer.

The pregnancy.

The letter asking me to terminate my baby.

Ethan didn’t just want to disappear.

He wanted to erase every responsibility connected to his old life.

Including me.

Including our son.

My hand rested on my stomach.

The voice whispered:

—Mom.

—Yes?

—Don’t cry.

I swallowed.

“I’m not.”

—You are.

I smiled sadly.

“How do you know?”

—Because your heartbeat changes.

That innocent answer almost broke me.

For a second, I forgot Ethan.

Forgot Yvette.

Forgot the betrayal.

I remembered the reason I was still standing.

My child.

Natalie looked at me carefully.

“What are you going to do?”

I looked at the documents.

Then at the fake death letter.

Then I answered:

“Nothing.”

She frowned.

“Nothing?”

“Not yet.”

I folded the letter carefully.

“Let Ethan believe he succeeded.”

Natalie’s eyes narrowed.

“You want to wait until he comes back?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked toward the window.

“Because I want him to understand something.”

“What?”

I smiled faintly.

“That the woman he thought he abandoned is not the woman who will be waiting for him.”

Fifteen days later.

Ethan Lu returned.

Exactly as my son predicted.

The airport cameras showed him arriving with Yvette.

Alive.

Healthy.

Smiling.

The same man who had supposedly died.

The same man who had left me mourning alone.

He didn’t know that every step he took was being recorded.

He didn’t know that Natalie had already prepared everything.

He didn’t know that the company board had received copies of the evidence.

He didn’t know that his greatest mistake was believing I was too broken to fight back.

That evening, Ethan opened the door to our house.

He expected tears.

He expected questions.

He expected a grieving wife desperate for answers.

Instead, he found me sitting calmly in the living room.

Pregnant.

Alive.

Waiting.

His face changed instantly.

“Claire…”

I looked at him.

“Welcome home.”

Yvette froze behind him.

Because she understood before Ethan did.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Ethan stepped forward.

“You…”

He couldn’t finish.

His eyes moved to my stomach.

Then back to my face.

“You knew?”

I smiled.

“I knew enough.”

His expression turned pale.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“Today you will listen.”

The old Ethan would have interrupted.

The old Ethan would have controlled the conversation.

But this Ethan stood there silently.

Because for the first time…

he didn’t know what power he had left.

I placed the fake letter on the table.

“You wrote this?”

He looked at it.

Silence.

“Answer me.”

Finally:

“Yes.”

A simple word.

But it confirmed everything.

The man I loved had not died.

He had abandoned me.

While I was crying for him, he was building a new life.

I looked at him.

“Did you ever think about what would happen if I believed you?”

His eyes moved away.

“I…”

“You wanted me to end our son’s life because it was inconvenient.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“No?”

I placed my hand over my belly.

“Then what did you mean?”

He had no answer.

Because there was none.

Then Natalie entered.

Ethan immediately recognized her.

His expression changed.

“What is she doing here?”

“Protecting me.”

Natalie placed a folder on the table.

“And protecting your son.”

Ethan opened it.

The moment he saw the documents, his face lost all color.

The accounts.

The transfers.

The insurance change.

Everything.

“You can’t do this.”

Natalie smiled coldly.

“Actually, we already did.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Claire.”

For the first time, his voice sounded afraid.

“Please.”

I looked at the man who had once promised to protect me forever.

Then I looked at the child he tried to erase.

And I finally understood.

Some people don’t lose you when you walk away.

They lose you the moment they believe you will always stay.

I stood up slowly.

“The divorce will continue.”

His eyes widened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Claire, we can fix this.”

I shook my head.

“You had fifteen days to come back.”

I paused.

“But you came back because you thought your plan failed.”

The truth hurt him.

Because it was true.

I walked past him.

And as I reached the door, my son whispered:

—Mom.

I smiled.

“Yes?”

—We won.

I looked back one last time at Ethan Lu.

“No.”

I whispered.

“We survived.”

And for the first time in my life…

I walked away without waiting for someone to choose me.
