Part 2: THE DAY ETHAN SULLIVAN DISCOVERED THE SON HE NEVER KNEW

The flash of the camera disappeared.

But Ethan Sullivan remained frozen on that stage.

Ten years.

Ten years since he had signed those divorce papers without looking at the last sentence.

Ten years since he had walked away believing he was leaving behind a marriage that had already ended.

But standing in front of him was a child who carried every detail he had never allowed himself to imagine.

His eyes.

His expression.

His face.

His blood.

His son.

The director noticed the strange silence and stepped closer.

“Mr. Sullivan?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

His fingers tightened around the diploma.

Leo looked up at him with confusion.

“Sir, is everything okay?”

That word.

Sir.

Not Dad.

Not Father.

Just a stranger.

And somehow, that hurt more than anything.

Ethan slowly handed him the award.

“Congratulations.”

His voice was barely audible.

Leo accepted it politely.

“Thank you.”

Then he walked back toward his seat.

Toward me.

Ethan watched every step.

The way Leo smiled at me.

The way he held the award carefully because he knew how much it meant.

The way he leaned toward me and whispered something that made me laugh.

A scene that should have been ordinary.

A scene he should have experienced thousands of times.

First day of school.

First achievement.

First disappointment.

First victory.

All the moments a father was supposed to see.

And he had missed every single one.

The ceremony continued.

But Ethan heard nothing.

The speeches.

The applause.

The congratulations.

Everything became background noise.

Because one question kept repeating in his mind.

How could there be a child?

How could Laura have carried his son for nine months while he walked away?

When everyone started leaving, Ethan didn’t move.

He waited.

I knew he would.

Ten years ago, I had spent years waiting for him.

Today, he waited for me.

The difference was that I no longer needed anything from him.

When Leo went to talk with his classmates, Ethan finally approached.

“Laura.”

I turned around.

The man in front of me was still Ethan Sullivan.

The same person who had once walked out without looking back.

But now his confidence was gone.

“Hello, Ethan.”

His eyes immediately went to Leo.

“Is he…”

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

I didn’t help him.

Because for ten years, I had carried every answer alone.

“Is he my son?”

The question finally came out.

I looked at him calmly.

“Yes.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

The pain.

The regret.

The realization.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The question almost made me laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You really want to ask me that?”

His face changed.

“Laura…”

“The day we divorced, I had an ultrasound in my bag.”

His breathing stopped.

“I planned to tell you after we signed.”

Silence.

“I thought you would be happy.”

I looked at him.

“I thought you would forget Vanessa for a moment and remember that we were building a family.”

Ethan lowered his head.

“But you didn’t even look at me.”

Every word was quiet.

And every word hurt.

“You were already leaving before you signed.”

His hands trembled slightly.

“I didn’t know.”

“No.”

I nodded.

“You didn’t.”

“And I was afraid.”

That confession surprised him.

“Afraid?”

“Yes.”

I looked toward Leo.

“I was afraid my son would grow up knowing he was only important because his father felt guilty.”

Ethan looked like he wanted to say something.

But nothing came.

Because there was no explanation that could change ten years.

“Did you hate me?”

The question was softer.

I thought about it.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“I hated what happened.”

I paused.

“But I stopped hating you a long time ago.”

“Then why didn’t you contact me?”

“Because you made your choice.”

The sentence was simple.

But Ethan understood.

He had wanted freedom.

He had wanted Vanessa.

He had wanted a life without responsibility.

And Laura had given him exactly that.

The problem was…

She had also given herself a life without him.

A few minutes later, Leo returned.

“Mom, are we leaving?”

I nodded.

Then Ethan looked at him.

A thousand emotions crossed his face.

“Leo.”

My son looked at him politely.

“Yes?”

Ethan opened his mouth.

For the first time in his life, the powerful businessman who could negotiate million-dollar deals didn’t know what to say.

Because there was no contract for this.

No money that could fix it.

No shortcut.

“I’m…”

He stopped.

Then he said:

“I’m happy you won.”

Leo smiled.

“Thank you.”

Another polite answer.

Another reminder.

He was not angry.

He was not cruel.

He simply didn’t know him.

And that was the consequence Ethan feared the most.

As we walked away, Ethan remained standing there.

Watching his son leave.

That night, Ethan opened the divorce agreement again.

The same document he had signed ten years earlier.

The one he had never finished reading.

His lawyer had kept a copy.

Ethan turned page by page.

Then he froze.

Because at the bottom of the final page was a handwritten note from Laura.

A note she had added before signing.

“If there is ever a child, I hope he grows up knowing that he was loved by both parents, even if one of them never knew.”

Ethan stared at the words for a long time.

Then his phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

The woman he had chosen ten years ago.

“Where are you?”

Ethan didn’t answer immediately.

For the first time, he realized something.

He had spent years chasing the person who returned.

While abandoning the person who stayed.

“I have to go.”

Vanessa became confused.

“Go where?”

Ethan looked at the old photo on his desk.

A picture of him and Laura before everything fell apart.

Then he answered:

“To meet my son.”

But when Ethan arrived at Laura’s house the next day, he discovered something he never expected.

Leo already knew who he was.

And the question his son asked him at the door…

was something Ethan would never forget.
