PART 2: The Man I Tried To Forget Became The One Person I Could Not Escape

The room became completely silent.

Not the comfortable silence of a doctor’s office.

The kind of silence that appears when someone discovers a secret that was never meant to be revealed.

Adrian Cole stood behind me, holding my medical file.

My pregnancy file.

His eyes remained fixed on the words written on the paper.

Estimated conception date.

Six weeks ago.

The exact night we had spent together.

The night I had tried to erase from my memory.

I wanted to disappear.

Not because I regretted my baby.

Never.

But because the one person I had spent years trying to forget was now standing in front of me, knowing everything.

The doctor looked between us.

—Mr. Cole, are you the father?

I opened my mouth.

But Adrian answered first.

—Yes.

One word.

Simple.

Certain.

My heart jumped.

I turned toward him.

—Adrian.

My voice was low.

—Don’t.

He looked at me.

For the first time, I saw something I had never seen in his eyes before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

—Claire, don’t lie anymore.

I almost laughed.

Lie?

The irony was almost painful.

—You want to talk about lying?

I looked directly at him.

—You want to talk about the fact that you spent four years pretending you didn’t notice me?

His expression changed.

The doctor quietly stepped away, giving us privacy.

But Adrian didn’t look away.

—You think I didn’t notice?

That question stopped me.

Because it was not what I expected.

I crossed my arms.

—What?

He took a slow breath.

—You really thought I didn’t know?

My mind went back.

The coffee.

The notes.

The ridiculous excuses I created just to see him.

The day he gave my latte away in front of everyone.

The day I promised myself I would never chase him again.

—Then why did you do that?

My voice cracked slightly.

—Why did you humiliate me?

Adrian looked down.

For the first time, the confident professor disappeared.

And I saw the man underneath.

—I was trying to make you stop.

I froze.

—Stop what?

—Loving me.

The answer hurt more than I expected.

He continued quietly.

—You were my student. I was your professor. There were boundaries I couldn’t cross.

I stared at him.

—So your solution was to make me hate you?

His silence answered.

And suddenly, everything became more complicated.

Because I had spent years believing he rejected me because I wasn’t enough.

Because I wasn’t attractive enough.

Because I wasn’t interesting enough.

But maybe the truth was different.

Maybe he was afraid.

That didn’t erase the pain.

But it changed the story.

Adrian stepped closer.

—That night at the hotel wasn’t a mistake.

I looked away.

—Don’t say that.

—Why?

—Because I already accepted that it was.

His expression softened.

—Claire, I have spent six weeks trying to reach you.

I didn’t respond.

—You blocked me.

—Yes.

—You changed your number.

—Yes.

—You disappeared.

I looked at him.

—Because I knew what would happen.

He frowned.

—What?

I smiled sadly.

—You would wake up, remember who I was, and regret it.

The words hung between us.

Because that was what I feared most.

Not that Adrian didn’t love me.

That he would.

And then decide he shouldn’t.

The doctor returned with the final report.

—Congratulations. Everything looks healthy.

She smiled.

—You should both discuss your next steps together.

Together.

The word felt strange.

Because Adrian and I had never been together.

Not really.

After leaving the clinic, Adrian followed me to the parking lot.

—Claire.

I kept walking.

—What?

—Why did you tell the doctor you only borrowed my genetics?

I stopped.

For a moment, I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

—Because it was easier.

—Easier?

I turned around.

—Yes.

I looked at him.

—It’s easier to say I borrowed something than admit I wanted something from you.

His expression changed.

—You wanted a child alone?

I looked down at my hands.

—No.

A pause.

—I wanted a family.

That was the first honest thing I had said.

Adrian was silent.

Then he asked:

—And the boyfriend?

I knew this moment would come.

I sighed.

—He never existed.

A strange emotion crossed his face.

Relief.

Then anger.

Then something else.

—Why would you say that?

I shrugged.

—Because I didn’t want you to think I was waiting for you.

He stared at me.

—Claire.

His voice became quieter.

—You really thought I would feel proud knowing another man had you?

I looked at him.

—You didn’t want me.

His eyes darkened.

—I thought I couldn’t have you.

There was a difference.

A painful one.

The next few weeks were confusing.

Adrian did not suddenly become the perfect man from a romance story.

He was still Adrian.

Still stubborn.

Still serious.

Still terrible at expressing emotions.

But he appeared.

Every appointment.

Every examination.

Every difficult day.

He was there.

Not because I asked.

Because he chose to be.

The first time he felt the baby move, he froze.

I had never seen him speechless before.

The great professor who could debate for hours stood completely still.

Then he whispered:

—Our baby.

I looked away.

Because hearing those words from him was dangerous.

It made me remember the girl I used to be.

The girl who waited outside classrooms.

The girl who believed one day he would look at her differently.

But this time, I was not that girl anymore.

I was Claire Bennett.

A woman who knew her own worth.

Three months later, Adrian asked me to meet him at the university.

The same campus where he had once broken my heart.

We stood in the old classroom.

The same room where he had rejected my coffee.

He looked around.

—Do you remember this place?

I smiled.

—Unfortunately.

He laughed softly.

A real laugh.

Something I had rarely seen from him.

Then he became serious.

—Claire.

I turned.

He took something from his pocket.

Not a ring.

Not yet.

A small notebook.

Old.

Worn.

I recognized it immediately.

My old notes.

The ones I used to leave on his desk.

My eyes widened.

—You kept those?

He looked embarrassed.

—Yes.

I couldn’t speak.

—You thought I didn’t care.

He opened the notebook.

Inside were every note I had written.

Every little message.

Every coffee order.

Every reminder.

—The truth is…

He looked at me.

—I noticed everything.

My eyes burned.

—Then why didn’t you say anything?

He answered honestly.

—Because I was afraid that if I allowed myself to love you, I would ruin your future.

A long silence followed.

Then I smiled.

—You know what the difference is between us now?

He looked confused.

—What?

—I don’t need you to choose me anymore.

I touched my stomach.

—I already chose myself.

Adrian nodded slowly.

And for the first time, I saw him understand.

Love was not about saving someone.

It was not about chasing someone.

It was about two people standing together because they wanted to.

Not because one person needed the other.

One year later, Adrian and I stood in front of the same doctor who had witnessed our secret being revealed.

This time, there was no panic.

No lies.

No pretending.

The doctor smiled.

—So, did you finally stop calling him borrowed genetics?

I laughed.

Adrian looked at me.

—Apparently, I was promoted.

I raised an eyebrow.

—Promoted?

He smiled.

—From borrowed genetics to the father of your child.

I laughed.

And for the first time, the sound did not belong to the girl who had once been embarrassed in a classroom.

It belonged to the woman who had found her way back.

The woman who stopped asking whether she was loved.

Because she finally knew.

She was.
