PART 2: THE NIGHT I STOPPED WAITING FOR JULIAN

When I arrived in Helsinki, the first thing I felt was not sadness.

It was silence.

A silence I hadn’t experienced in years.

No one was asking me to understand.

No one was asking me to wait.

No one was asking me to put someone else’s feelings before mine.

The driver took me through roads covered in snow.

The city lights slowly disappeared.

Until finally, the glass cabin appeared in the middle of the frozen landscape.

Exactly as I had imagined.

A small wooden cabin.

A transparent ceiling.

Snow surrounding every direction.

And a sky waiting to reveal the Northern Lights.

Six months ago, I had booked this place because Julian said he wanted to create a memory with me.

Now I was there alone.

And strangely…

I wasn’t lonely.

I placed my suitcase inside.

I touched the table where I had imagined we would sit together.

Then I smiled.

Because I realized something.

I had spent years waiting for Julian to choose me.

But I had never asked myself why I needed to be chosen.

That night, I sat under the glass ceiling.

The sky was dark.

The snow was falling quietly.

Then, slowly, green lights appeared above me.

The Northern Lights.

The exact thing I had dreamed about.

I took out my phone.

I wanted to send him a photo.

My fingers stopped.

Because I suddenly remembered.

Whenever something beautiful happened, my first instinct was always to share it with Julian.

Even when he was the reason I was hurt.

I put the phone down.

For the first time, I enjoyed a beautiful moment without needing someone else to validate it.

Meanwhile, thousands of kilometers away, Julian discovered that I had really left.

The first thing he did was call me.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Then he checked the travel information.

Helsinki.

He froze.

Because he finally understood.

I hadn’t gone home.

I hadn’t waited.

I hadn’t forgiven him.

Marcus was sitting beside him when Julian lowered the phone.

“She went?”

Julian nodded.

“Alone.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

“I thought she would come back.”

That sentence made Julian look at her.

“What?”

Vanessa immediately lowered her eyes.

“I mean… Claire always forgives you.”

Silence.

Because that was the truth.

I always had.

Julian remembered every time I had stepped back.

Every time I had apologized first.

Every time I had said:

“It’s okay.”

Even when it wasn’t.

The next morning, he went to our apartment.

But when he opened the door, something felt wrong.

My shoes were gone.

My clothes were gone.

The photos on the wall were removed.

The apartment looked exactly the same.

Except I was no longer inside it.

On the table was an envelope.

His name was written on it.

Julian opened it with shaking hands.

Inside was only one page.

“Julian,

I spent five years trying to become the person you would never leave.

I was understanding.

Patient.

Flexible.

I accepted every explanation.

Every emergency.

Every person who needed you more than I did.

But I finally understood something.

A relationship should not require one person to disappear so the other can feel comfortable.

Don’t worry.

I’m not angry.

I’m just tired.

Take care of Vanessa.

You always seemed better at that.”

Julian read it twice.

Then a third time.

For the first time, he felt the fear of losing me.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was peaceful.

Anger could be repaired.

Silence was different.

That afternoon, he called the glass cabin.

The receptionist confirmed something that made him completely silent.

“Your girlfriend canceled the second guest.”

“She requested the reservation remain only under her name.”

Girlfriend.

The word sounded strange.

Because after five years, he realized something.

He had treated me like someone who would always stay.

But he had never truly chosen me.

Three days later, Julian flew to Finland.

He found me exactly where he expected.

Under the same glass ceiling.

Watching the same sky.

When I turned and saw him, I wasn’t surprised.

Maybe a part of me knew he would come.

But I didn’t feel the old excitement.

Only calm.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“What are you doing here?”

He stopped.

Because he expected anger.

He expected tears.

He expected me to ask why.

Instead, I simply asked what he was doing there.

“I came for you.”

I smiled slightly.

“No.”

His expression changed.

“I came because I realized I was wrong.”

I looked back at the sky.

“The problem is, Julian…”

“What?”

“You only realized my value when you thought you lost access to me.”

He lowered his head.

“That’s not true.”

“Isn’t it?”

He had no answer.

Then he said:

“I was going to propose.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

He froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

I turned toward him.

“Because a ring means nothing if the person giving it never makes you feel chosen.”

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Julian stepped closer.

“Can we start over?”

I looked at the Northern Lights above us.

The same sky I had waited five years to see.

The same sky I finally saw when I stopped waiting for him.

“I hope you find happiness, Julian.”

His face changed.

Because he understood.

That wasn’t forgiveness.

That was goodbye.

But before he left, he received a message.

From Marcus.

One sentence.

“Vanessa admitted everything.”

Julian looked at the screen.

And for the first time, he discovered the truth.

The trip.

The crisis.

The canceled flight.

Everything Vanessa had done was not because she needed him.

She had been trying to stop him from proposing.

And the woman he sacrificed for…

had been the person who never wanted him to choose me.
