For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
Victoria Lane.
That name stayed in my mind like a warning.
Because suddenly every strange detail from the last few months connected itself.
The late-night calls.
The sudden meetings outside the office.
The way Daniel became protective of his phone.
The moments when I asked who he was talking to and he always answered:
“Just work.”
I had believed him.
Because I trusted him.
And because I never imagined that the person who promised to build a future with me was also the person quietly removing me from it.
Lily looked at my face.
“Sofia?”
I forced myself to breathe.
“I’m fine.”
She didn’t believe me.
“No, you’re not.”
I closed the document in front of me.
“Lily, do you know when Victoria starts?”
“Monday.”
I nodded.
The same day my transfer became effective.
The same day I was supposed to leave everything behind.
The same day Daniel planned to put her in my position.
Everything had been calculated.
I left the office earlier that afternoon.
Not because I was weak.
Because I needed time to think.
When I arrived at my apartment, I realized something.
It wasn’t my home anymore.
Not because of the furniture.
Not because of the walls.
Because every corner reminded me of a person who had already decided to remove me from his life.
I opened the closet.
My suitcase was still there.
Half packed.
Exactly how I had left it.
I looked at the clothes inside.
A year and a half of my life fit into one suitcase.
That was how quickly a person could become temporary.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I ignored it.
Then again.
And again.
Finally, a message appeared.
“Please answer me.”
I stared at those words.
Before, that message would have made me immediately respond.
I would have worried.
I would have wondered if something had happened.
Now I only wondered why he was afraid.
Not why he hurt me.
Why he was afraid.
Because he had already made his choice.
At seven in the evening, there was a knock on the door.
I knew it was him.
I didn’t open it.
“Sofia.”
His voice came through the door.
“We need to talk.”
I stayed silent.
“Please.”
Another pause.
“I know you are angry.”
I almost laughed.
Angry?
That was the easiest explanation.
Anger was simple.
Pain was more complicated.
“You didn’t even ask me why I was transferred.”
His voice became quiet.
“I thought you knew.”
That sentence made my hand freeze.
I opened the door.
“What did you say?”
Daniel stood there.
Tired.
Confused.
Almost like he was the victim.
“I thought you knew.”
I looked at him.
“Explain.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“Sofia, this isn’t what you think.”
“Then tell me what it is.”
He didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence told me more than words.
Finally, he said:
“Victoria needed the position.”
I stared at him.
“Needed?”
“She just returned from Boston. She needed a stable position.”
“And I didn’t?”
His expression changed.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“No?”
I stepped back.
“You moved me thousands of kilometers away because your ex-girlfriend needed my job.”
“She has experience.”
“So do I.”
“I know.”
“Then why me?”
Silence.
That was the question.
The only question that mattered.
Why me?
Daniel looked away.
“Because you are capable.”
I laughed.
A short, bitter laugh.
“That’s your explanation?”

“You sent away the person who could handle the job because she was the easiest person to sacrifice.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
My voice remained calm.
“That’s exactly what you did.”
He stepped closer.
“Sofia, Victoria and I have history.”
There it was.
The truth.
Not an apology.
Not regret.
A confession.
“How long?”
He didn’t answer.
“How long have you been talking to her?”
“Sofia…”
“How long?”
His silence was enough.
I nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
He sounded desperate.
“She came back unexpectedly.”
“And?”
“And I wanted to help her.”
I looked at him.
“You wanted to help her.”
A pause.
“What about me?”
His expression softened.
“You don’t need help.”
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
Because it revealed everything.
He didn’t abandon me because he thought I was weak.
He abandoned me because he thought I was strong enough to survive being abandoned.
“You know what the saddest thing is, Daniel?”
He looked at me.
“I spent two years trying to prove that I was worthy of standing beside you.”
I shook my head.
“But you spent one day proving I never stood beside you at all.”
His face changed.
“Sofia…”
I picked up my suitcase.
This time, I wasn’t leaving because I was hurt.
I was leaving because I understood.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m moving out.”
“You don’t have to.”
I looked around the apartment.
“You’re right.”
“This was never mine.”
The words made him silent.
Because they were true.
The next morning, I submitted my resignation.
Not because I had lost.
Because I refused to let Daniel decide where my career went.
When the HR manager saw my letter, she looked shocked.
“Sofia, are you sure?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“But the transfer…”
“I know.”
She lowered her voice.
“Between us…”
I looked at her.
“Victoria’s arrival caused a lot of discussion.”
“What do you mean?”
She hesitated.
“Her position wasn’t approved through the normal process.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“There were special instructions from senior management.”
My heart sank.
“Daniel?”
She looked away.
“I didn’t say that.”
But she didn’t need to.
That afternoon, I received an unexpected call.
From my former supervisor at another company.
A company I had interviewed with two years earlier.
“Sofia, we heard you may be available.”
I was surprised.
“How?”
“Your old mentor recommended you.”
I smiled slightly.
For the first time in weeks, something felt normal.
Someone valued me for my ability.
Not because of my relationship with Daniel.
Not because I was convenient.
Because I was Sofia.
Three days later, Daniel came to my new office.
But this time, he wasn’t confident.
He wasn’t my boss.
He wasn’t the man deciding my future.
He stood outside my door holding a folder.
“Sofia.”
I looked up.
“What happened?”
He placed the folder down.
“Victoria resigned.”
I remained silent.
“Why are you telling me this?”
His eyes looked tired.
“Because I realized something.”
I waited.
“I thought I was protecting someone who needed me.”
A pause.
“But I destroyed the person who never asked me for anything.”
For the first time, Daniel looked like he understood.
But understanding came too late.
Because he didn’t know the biggest truth yet.
The transfer order that removed me from my position…
was not only approved by him.
Someone else had prepared it.
Someone inside the company who wanted Daniel to fail.
And when the investigation began, Daniel discovered that Victoria’s return had never been accidental.
