PART 2: THE SECRET ALVARO HID FOR FIVE YEARS

The article stayed open on my screen for almost ten minutes.

I read the same sentences over and over again, hoping that somehow the words would change.

They didn’t.

My father’s company had collapsed.
The Ferrer family had bought the remaining assets.
The investigation had disappeared before reaching court.

And Álvaro had been there.

Five years ago.

The same year we met.

The same year he told me he had fallen in love with me.

I closed my laptop.

My hands were cold.

Because suddenly every memory I had with him started looking different.

The first time he saw me at the charity event.
The night we talked until sunrise.
The way he looked at me when he said:

—You are the only person who makes me forget everything else.

At that time, I believed those words were romantic.

Now I wondered if they were guilt.

I needed answers.

Not excuses.

Not another secret hidden behind the phrase “I’m protecting you.”

When Álvaro returned that evening, he immediately knew something was wrong.

Maybe because he knew me too well.

Or maybe because he knew exactly what I had discovered.

—You found something.

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at him.

—Did you know about my father’s company?

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

That tiny hesitation.

The same hesitation he had when Sophie called.

The same hesitation before every truth he didn’t want to say.

—Claire…

—Answer me.

Silence.

Then he sat down.

—Yes.

That single word felt heavier than any confession.

—How long?

—Since before we started dating.

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

—Five years.

He looked away.

—Yes.

—You knew my family was destroyed because of yours.

—It wasn’t that simple.

—Then explain it.

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence told me everything.

—Álvaro.

His eyes returned to mine.

—My father made mistakes.

I froze.

—Your father?

—Yes.

—So you knew.

He nodded slowly.

—When I met you, I didn’t know who you were.

I stared at him.

—But you found out.

—Later.

—And you stayed.

His jaw tightened.

—Because by then I loved you.

The words should have comforted me.

They didn’t.

Because there was another question.

—Did you ever plan to tell me?

Álvaro looked down.

That was the answer.

I stood up.

—No.

—Claire…

—You were going to marry me while carrying a secret that could destroy everything between our families.

—Because I was trying to fix it.

I stopped.

—Fix what?

He took a deep breath.

—Your father’s situation wasn’t only about money.

I waited.

—There were people involved who wanted him blamed.

My heartbeat increased.

—Who?

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen in Álvaro.

Fear.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Fear.

—Claire, some things are dangerous because they don’t stay in the past.

I shook my head.

—No.

I grabbed my bag.

—You don’t get to decide what I can handle anymore.

—Where are you going?

—To find the truth.

—Claire.

I turned around.

—Do you know what hurts the most?

He stayed silent.

—Not that you lied.

His expression changed.

—It’s that you spent five years looking at me every day and deciding I wasn’t strong enough to know.

I left.

That night, I stayed at a hotel.

Not because I hated him.

That would have been easier.

I stayed because I still loved him.

And loving someone who kept choosing silence was much harder than hating them.

The next morning, I received a message.

From Nerea.

“I know you’re angry with me.”

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

“But you deserve to know why Álvaro saved me that night.”

I almost deleted it.

Then I remembered something.

The phrase she said when I was behind the door.

“She doesn’t know anything, does she?”

I replied:

“Tell me.”

The answer came quickly.

“Nerea: Five years ago, the night you and Álvaro started dating, something happened.”

I read the sentence again.

Five years ago.

The beginning of everything.

“Nerea: Álvaro wasn’t with me because he wanted to leave you.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Nerea: He was trying to stop something from happening to you.”

I frowned.

That wasn’t what I expected.

“Nerea: Your father was going to be arrested that night.”

I stopped breathing.

“Nerea: Álvaro found out before anyone else.”

I continued reading.

“Nerea: He went to warn your family.”

My eyes moved faster.

“Nerea: But he arrived too late.”

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

“Nerea: Your father had already made a decision.”

I typed:

“What decision?”

The reply took longer this time.

Almost five minutes.

Then:

“Nerea: He asked Álvaro to protect you.”

I stared at those words.

Protect me.

From what?

Another message appeared.

“Nerea: Álvaro never told you because your father made him promise.”

I immediately called her.

She answered after one ring.

—Claire.

—Why didn’t you tell me before?

Her voice was quiet.

—Because Álvaro asked me not to.

—Everyone keeps deciding things for me.

Silence.

Then she said:

—You have the right to be angry.

I closed my eyes.

—What happened that night?

Nerea hesitated.

—Your father discovered that someone inside his company had betrayed him.

—Who?

—I don’t know.

—But Álvaro knows.

—Yes.

I looked out the hotel window.

The city moved below me.

People walking.
Cars passing.
Everyone living normal lives.

While my entire past was changing.

—Why did he call you “Little queen”?

Nerea was silent.

Then she answered:

—Because that was what your father called you.

I froze.

—What?

—Álvaro used that name because it reminded him of the promise he made.

My throat tightened.

—What promise?

Her voice became softer.

—That no matter what happened, he would never let you suffer because of your family’s mistakes.

I sat down.

For the first time, the story wasn’t as simple as betrayal.

But that didn’t erase the pain.

Because even if Álvaro had protected me…

he had also lied to me.

Five years of love.

Five years of secrets.

Five years of him deciding what I could and couldn’t know.

That evening, I returned to the apartment.

Álvaro was there.

He looked exhausted.

Like he hadn’t slept.

When he saw me, he immediately stood.

—Claire.

I held up my hand.

—No.

He stopped.

—I know about my father.

His face went pale.

—Who told you?

—Does it matter?

He looked away.

That was enough.

—You promised him.

Álvaro didn’t deny it.

—Yes.

—And you kept that promise for five years.

—Yes.

—Even when you married me.

He looked at me.

—I was going to tell you.

—When?

Silence.

I smiled sadly.

—Exactly.

There was no answer.

Because there was never a right time.

Only more reasons to wait.

Then Álvaro walked closer.

—Claire, there is something else you need to know.

I looked at him.

—What else?

His expression changed.

And I knew before he spoke.

There was another secret.

Another piece missing.

—The reason your father’s case disappeared…

He paused.

—Wasn’t because the investigation failed.

My heart sank.

—Then why?

Álvaro whispered:

—Because someone paid to make it disappear.

The room became silent.

—Who?

He looked directly at me.

And the answer changed everything.

—Someone inside my own family.
