PART 3: THE DAY DOMINIC REALIZED WHO HE HAD ABANDONED

The bus had barely traveled three blocks when my phone vibrated.

A message from my father.

Security team is on the way. Do not enter the apartment alone.

I stared at the screen.

For years, I had avoided calling my father for problems with Dominic.

Not because my father wouldn’t help.

Because I wanted to prove that I could build a life without using my family’s name.

I wanted a marriage where my husband loved Audrey Brooks, not the daughter of Charles Brooks.

But sitting there on that bus with my newborn son in my arms, still recovering from surgery, I finally understood something.

Keeping my identity hidden had protected Dominic from reality.

It had allowed him to believe he could treat me however he wanted.

The bus stopped near my apartment building.

I stepped down slowly.

Every step reminded me of the pain I was trying to ignore.

A black SUV was already waiting outside.

Two security officers stood beside it.

And beside them…

was my father.

Charles Brooks.

The same man who could make CEOs nervous with one phone call.

But when he saw me holding Leo, his expression changed completely.

Not a businessman.

Not a billionaire.

Just a father.

“My daughter.”

Those two words almost broke me.

I had stayed strong through the hospital.

Through the bus ride.

Through Dominic leaving.

But hearing my father’s voice made the tears finally come.

He wrapped his arms around me carefully.

“Why didn’t you call me sooner?”

I looked down.

“Because I wanted to handle my own life.”

His eyes moved to my son.

“You did.”

He gently touched Leo’s blanket.

“But you were never supposed to handle cruelty alone.”

The security team entered the building first.

They checked the apartment before allowing us inside.

When the door opened, I immediately noticed something.

Nothing looked different.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

The house I had prepared for our baby.

The nursery I decorated.

The photos on the wall.

The life I thought we were building.

All of it still existed.

Except my marriage.

My father looked around quietly.

Then he saw something on the kitchen counter.

A note.

I picked it up.

It was from Dominic.

Don’t forget to make dinner tonight. Mom might come by later.

I stared at the words.

Five days after giving birth.

After leaving me at the hospital entrance.

His biggest concern was dinner.

My father read it over my shoulder.

His jaw tightened.

But he said nothing.

That was when I knew Dominic had made a mistake.

Because my father was not angry at the insult.

He was angry because someone had hurt his daughter and grandson.

Three hours later, Dominic returned.

He walked through the door laughing.

“Mom said the restaurant was amazing. You should have—”

He stopped.

The smile disappeared.

Because standing in the living room were my father, his security team, and two attorneys.

Dominic looked confused.

Then annoyed.

“What is this?”

I sat on the couch with Leo sleeping beside me.

For the first time in years, I didn’t feel like I needed to explain myself.

“My father came to help me.”

Dominic scoffed.

“Your father?”

He looked at Charles.

Then laughed.

“Is this some kind of intimidation?”

My father didn’t respond.

One of the attorneys stepped forward.

“Mr. Vance, we need to discuss several matters.”

Dominic frowned.

“What matters?”

“The vehicle.”

He looked confused.

“The SUV?”

“Yes.”

“The one currently registered under Brooks Family Holdings.”

His face changed.

“What?”

I watched him process the information.

The luxury SUV he used to impress investors.

The vehicle he had chosen over driving his injured wife home.

It had never belonged to him.

Then the attorney continued.

“The apartment lease.”

Dominic’s expression became tense.

“The same situation.”

Silence.

For two years, Dominic had believed he was the one providing everything.

He never realized he was living inside a world my family had quietly built.

But my father wasn’t finished.

“There is also the matter of your company.”

Dominic looked up.

“What about my company?”

My father finally spoke.

“You should ask your investors why they trusted you in the first place.”

The color drained from Dominic’s face.

Because now he understood.

The connections.

The introductions.

The opportunities.

The doors that had opened.

They weren’t because Dominic was untouchable.

They were because people knew Charles Brooks believed in him.

And that support was now gone.

Dominic looked at me.

“Audrey…”

His voice softened.

The same voice he used when he wanted something.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked at him.

“Would it have changed anything?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because we both knew the answer.

If he respected me when he thought I had nothing…

he would never have deserved me after discovering I had everything.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Within seconds, his face turned pale.

“What?”

A pause.

“No, that’s impossible.”

Everyone watched as he slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?” his mother asked.

Dominic looked at me.

Then at my father.

“The investors are pulling out.”

The room became silent.

My father looked away.

Not because he enjoyed it.

Because he had already decided.

The man who abandoned his wife and newborn child for a family lunch was finally facing the consequences of his choices.

But then Dominic said something that made everyone freeze.

“Wait.”

He looked at me.

“You knew about the investment issue before today.”

I didn’t answer.

His eyes narrowed.

“You planned this.”

I looked at my son sleeping peacefully.

“No, Dominic.”

“I didn’t plan your downfall.”

I paused.

“You did.”

Then my father placed a final document on the table.

Dominic looked at the title.

And his entire expression changed.

Because it wasn’t about the SUV.

It wasn’t about the apartment.

It was about the one thing Dominic cared about most.

His company.
