PART 2: The Daughter They Tried to Destroy

The words left by my father echoed in my mind.

Your mother bought your apartment.

I stared at Héctor Valdés.

The man I had spent my entire life calling a stranger.

The man who had just saved me from entering prison.

—Why would my mother do that?

My voice sounded distant.

Héctor remained silent for several seconds.

Then he opened a folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

The sale contract.

The power of attorney.

The signatures.

Everything.

I looked at the last page.

My signature.

My name.

But it wasn’t mine.

Someone had copied it.

—Your mother needed money.

Héctor’s voice was heavy.

—But she didn’t do it alone.

My fingers tightened around the papers.

—Mauricio?

My father nodded.

—They have been working together for years.

The world seemed to stop.

Years.

Not days.

Not one mistake.

Years.

I remembered the first time Mauricio told me he loved me.

He said I was different from everyone else.

That I was intelligent.

Strong.

Independent.

I believed him.

I believed that a man could love a woman for who she was.

I never imagined he loved what he could take from me.

My position.

My contacts.

My family name hidden behind another identity.

And my money.

Especially my money.

Héctor looked at me.

—There is something else you need to know.

I waited.

—Mateo is not with Mauricio.

My heart stopped.

—What?

My father looked away.

—Your husband took him.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

My son.

The only person who had nothing to do with their betrayal.

—Where is he?

—We are finding out.

I stood up immediately.

—No.

My voice trembled.

—I need to see him.

Héctor grabbed his cane.

—Valeria.

It was the first time he said my name like a father.

—Right now, if you go directly to Mauricio, you lose the advantage.

I looked at him.

—My son is not an advantage.

The sadness in his eyes surprised me.

—That’s why you are different from them.

That night, I stayed in one of Héctor’s houses.

A place that technically belonged to me.

A life I never knew existed.

But I couldn’t sleep.

Every memory came back.

Mauricio smiling at me.

Mauricio holding Mateo.

Mauricio promising that we would grow old together.

All lies.

At three in the morning, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A child’s voice came from the other side.

—Mom?

My entire body froze.

—Mateo?

Silence.

Then a whisper.

—Dad says you did something bad.

My eyes filled with tears.

—Mateo, listen to me.

I pressed the phone against my ear.

—Mom loves you.

A man’s voice suddenly appeared.

—Give me the phone.

Mauricio.

My blood went cold.

—You found a way out?

His voice was no longer sweet.

No longer pretending.

—Interesting.

I didn’t answer.

He continued:

—You always had something hidden.

—Just like your father.

I froze.

So he knew.

—What do you want?

He laughed.

—The same thing I always wanted.

—Everything that should have been mine.

The next morning, Héctor’s lawyers discovered something unexpected.

The fraud case had been prepared months before.

Someone inside the company had created fake suppliers.

Someone had copied my digital signature.

Someone had manipulated the security cameras.

And the person who approved the final transfers…

Was not Mauricio.

It was my mother.

Susan Valdés.

My own mother.

I went to see her.

Not because I wanted answers.

Because I needed to look into her eyes.

She opened the door.

When she saw me standing there, alive and free, her face lost color.

—Valeria…

I entered without waiting.

On the table was a cup of coffee.

A normal morning.

As if she had not helped destroy my life.

—Why?

That was the only word I could say.

My mother sat down.

She didn’t cry.

She didn’t apologize.

She only said:

—Because you never understood your place.

I stared at her.

—My place?

She sighed.

—Héctor chose you.

A pause.

—He chose you over me.

I felt my chest tighten.

Then everything became clear.

The hidden identity.

The distance.

The hatred.

My mother had spent years punishing me for a choice I never made.

—You sold my house.

—It was necessary.

—You sent me to prison.

She looked away.

And that silence was an answer.

That afternoon, I returned to Héctor.

I placed the documents on his desk.

—She was involved.

He already knew.

But hearing it from me changed something in his expression.

—I’m sorry.

I looked at him.

The powerful businessman.

The man everyone feared.

And for the first time, I saw only a father who had lost years with his daughter.

—Why didn’t you look for me?

His eyes became red.

—Your mother made me believe you hated me.

Silence.

—She told me you wanted nothing from me.

I swallowed.

Twenty-eight years.

Destroyed by lies.

Three days later, the evidence was released.

The company board received proof.

The fraud accusation against me began collapsing.

Mauricio tried to leave the country.

He didn’t make it far.

The same system he used to trap me finally turned against him.

When authorities arrested him, he was still holding the documents he thought would save him.

They didn’t.

They were the proof.

Months later, I stood in court again.

But this time, I wasn’t wearing handcuffs.

Mauricio sat across from me.

No perfect suit.

No arrogant smile.

Just a man who finally understood that the woman he underestimated had never been weak.

She had simply been silent.

The judge asked if I wanted to say something.

I looked at Mauricio.

Then at my mother.

Then at Héctor.

And I said:

—For a long time, I thought losing everything was the worst thing that could happen to me.

A pause.

—But sometimes losing everything is the only way to discover who was trying to take it from you.

A year later, I changed my last name legally.

Not because I was ashamed of who I was.

Because I finally had the freedom to choose.

I became Valeria Valdés.

Not as the daughter of a powerful man.

Not as the wife of Mauricio.

But as myself.

The woman who survived betrayal.

The woman who rebuilt her life.

The woman who walked into prison with nothing…

And walked out carrying the truth.

And Mauricio learned the hardest lesson of all:

He thought he had sent me to prison.

But the real prison was the life I had lived believing he loved me.
