PART 2: THE LOVE THAT ARRIVED TOO LATE

The night Adrián returned home, he believed everything was still the same.

He believed Elena was only angry.

He believed that after a few days, she would forgive him.

Because that was what had always happened.

Even after the first betrayal.

Even after the divorce.

Even after he broke her heart in the cruelest way.

Somewhere deep inside, Adrián still believed Elena would always choose him.

But this time was different.

This time, Elena was no longer waiting for him to change.

She had already changed herself.

When Adrián entered the bedroom, he saw Elena lying quietly on the bed.

The lights were off.

The room was silent.

He walked closer carefully.

—Elena…

No response.

He sat beside her and gently touched her hand.

—Don’t be angry anymore.

His voice was soft.

The same voice that once made her believe everything would be okay.

—I’m here.

—I came back to you.

Elena slowly opened her eyes.

She looked at him.

Not with hatred.

Not with anger.

Just with exhaustion.

And somehow, that hurt Adrián more.

Because anger meant she still cared.

But exhaustion meant she was tired of caring.

—Adrián.

Her voice was calm.

—Do you know what the saddest thing is?

He looked at her.

—What?

She smiled faintly.

—Not that you betrayed me.

His expression changed.

—It’s that after everything…

—After everything you did to get me back…

—You still thought I would accept the same pain again.

Adrián immediately shook his head.

—No.

—This time is different.

—Vanessa is just…

Elena raised her hand.

Stopping him.

That gesture made him silent.

Because three years ago, she had also raised her hand.

But back then, it was because she was crying.

Begging.

Asking him not to leave.

Now, it was because she didn’t want to hear another excuse.

—A debt.

She whispered.

—You always have a debt.

Adrián lowered his eyes.

—Elena…

—First, it was because she saved your life.

—Then it was because she needed you.

—Then it was because she had no one else.

She looked at him.

—When did I become the person who had to understand everything?

He couldn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

The truth was painful.

Elena had spent years understanding him.

But nobody had ever tried to understand her.

The next morning, Adrián woke up and found the house unusually quiet.

He immediately felt uneasy.

He walked downstairs.

The dining table was empty.

No breakfast.

No coffee.

No Elena waiting for him.

Then he saw the envelope.

His name was written on it.

His heart tightened.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was the divorce agreement.

And a letter.

Only a few pages.

But every word felt heavier than anything he had ever carried.

“Adrián.”

“I once thought losing you would destroy me.”

“But I was wrong.”

“The thing that destroyed me was having you beside me while feeling completely alone.”

His fingers trembled.

“I believed your return meant you finally understood my value.”

“I believed the man who knelt before me was different from the man who abandoned me.”

“But I forgot something.”

“People can regret losing something without truly knowing how to cherish it.”

Adrián stopped reading.

His eyes became red.

“No matter how many steps you climbed.”

“No matter how much blood you shed.”

“No matter how many times you said you loved me.”

“You still chose another woman when it mattered.”

The paper became blurry.

Because tears had fallen onto it.

“I don’t hate Vanessa.”

“I don’t hate your child.”

“But I refuse to spend the rest of my life proving that I deserve to be chosen.”

The last sentence was short.

But it destroyed him.

“Thank you for loving me once.”

“Now let me love myself.”

Adrián dropped the letter.

For the first time in years…

He felt truly afraid.

Not afraid of losing his reputation.

Not afraid of losing money.

Not afraid of losing control.

Afraid of losing Elena forever.

He immediately called her.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

He called twenty times.

Nothing.

Then he rushed to the airport.

Because he remembered.

Ten days.

She had said she would leave in ten days.

But when he arrived, Elena was already there.

Standing near the departure gate.

A suitcase beside her.

Adrián ran toward her.

—Elena!

People turned.

But he didn’t care.

He grabbed her hand.

—Don’t go.

She looked at him.

Calmly.

—Why?

The question stunned him.

—Because I love you.

A bitter smile appeared on her lips.

—Do you?

He froze.

—Yes.

—Then why did you leave me every time someone else needed you?

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Because that was the truth.

He loved Elena.

But he had always loved her in a way that benefited him.

He loved her when she waited.

When she forgave.

When she sacrificed.

But real love required choosing.

And when the choice came…

He failed.

—Give me another chance.

His voice broke.

—I will fix everything.

Elena looked at him.

For a moment, Adrián thought she would soften.

The old Elena would have.

But that woman no longer existed.

—Adrián.

She gently removed her hand.

—You spent years trying to prove you couldn’t live without me.

—But you never proved you could live for me.

The boarding announcement sounded.

She picked up her suitcase.

Adrián stood there helplessly.

The same man who once controlled everything.

The same man who made an entire street close to search for a ring.

The same man who climbed thousands of temple steps for an amulet.

Now couldn’t stop one woman from walking away.

Months later, Elena started a new life in London.

She joined her brother’s company.

She traveled.

She rebuilt friendships.

She laughed again.

A real laugh.

One that didn’t come from pretending everything was fine.

Meanwhile, Adrián changed too.

But not because Elena returned.

She never did.

He finally understood that regret was not the same as redemption.

He took responsibility.

He ended every connection with the past.

He became a better person.

But some mistakes came with a price.

And his price was living with the knowledge that the woman who loved him the most…

was the woman he hurt the deepest.

One year later, Adrián received a letter.

No name.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Elena standing beside the ocean.

Smiling.

Happy.

On the back were only four words:

“I am finally free.”

Adrián held the photo for a long time.

Then he smiled sadly.

Because for the first time…

he didn’t wish for Elena to come back.

He only wished that she would continue being happy.

Even if that happiness no longer included him.
