PART 2: The Truth Hidden Behind the Rain

When the plane disappeared above the clouds, I thought I would finally forget Lucas Reed.

I was wrong.

Some people don’t leave because they are still important.

They leave because they once were.

Three months after arriving in Europe, I stopped checking university forums.

I stopped searching for news about Lucas.

I stopped wondering if he had finally discovered the truth.

I built a new life.

New city.

New friends.

New goals.

For the first time in years, I was not someone’s childhood friend.

Not someone’s girlfriend.

Not the person standing behind another person’s achievements.

I was Amelia Hayes.

Just Amelia.

Meanwhile, Lucas believed everything was still the same.

Until the day he needed something only I could provide.

During a military exchange program, Lucas was invited to represent the university at an international training conference.

It should have been his proudest moment.

Until the evaluation committee asked one question.

“Who was the person responsible for your survival during the island incident?”

The room became silent.

Lucas answered immediately.

“Olivia Hayes.”

But before the sentence finished, the examiner frowned.

“Are you sure?”

Lucas looked confused.

“Yes.”

The examiner opened a file.

“Because the rescue report states something different.”

Lucas froze.

“What?”

“The person who reached you first was Amelia Hayes.”

The air disappeared from his lungs.

For years, that name had been buried under a misunderstanding.

A misunderstanding he had never questioned.

The examiner continued.

“She was the one who called the rescue team.”

“She was the one who provided first aid.”

“She was the one who stayed with you until evacuation.”

Lucas stared at the document.

His fingers trembled.

“No.”

The word came out quietly.

Because suddenly every memory changed.

The scarf.

The voice.

The name he heard while unconscious.

Olivia Hayes.

Not because Olivia saved him.

Because Amelia was calling her.

That night, Lucas searched through old records.

The rescue photos.

The medical reports.

The witness statements.

Everything pointed to one truth.

The person he had protected for years…

was not the person who saved him.

It was the person he had hurt.

The next morning, he went to find Olivia.

She was sitting in the training room.

When she saw his expression, her smile disappeared.

“Lucas?”

He placed the documents on the table.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Olivia became silent.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You know exactly.”

Her fingers tightened.

Then she sighed.

“Does it matter now?”

Lucas looked at her in disbelief.

“Does it matter?”

“You let me believe a lie for years.”

Olivia lowered her eyes.

“I didn’t create that memory.”

“No.”

Lucas answered.

“But you accepted the praise.”

Silence.

For the first time, he saw Olivia differently.

Not as the shy girl he wanted to protect.

But as someone who had allowed another person to lose everything while she received the credit.

“I loved you,” she whispered.

Lucas stepped back.

“No.”

“You loved being the person I thanked.”

That sentence destroyed the last excuse.

Because he finally understood.

He had spent years searching for the person who saved his life.

But he ignored the person who had actually saved his heart.

The same person who stood in the rain.

The same person he pushed away.

The same person who left without asking him to chase her.

Lucas immediately tried to contact Amelia.

Her number had changed.

Her old apartment was empty.

The university said she was still abroad.

Every door he tried to open was already closed.

For the first time, Lucas felt the same helplessness Amelia had felt.

The feeling of calling someone who no longer answered.

Months later, Lucas saw her name again.

An international art exhibition.

The main artist.

Amelia Hayes.

He traveled across the country without hesitation.

When he arrived, she was standing in front of her artwork.

Calm.

Confident.

Completely different.

Lucas stopped several steps away.

“Amelia.”

She turned.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then she smiled politely.

“Professor Reed.”

That title hurt more than anger.

Because once she had called him Lucas.

“I know the truth now.”

She didn’t react.

“Congratulations.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I should have believed you.”

“Yes.”

“I should have protected you.”

She looked at him.

“But you didn’t.”

The words were simple.

But they carried eighteen years of disappointment.

Lucas lowered his head.

“Can you forgive me?”

Amelia looked at the painting behind her.

Then back at him.

“I already did.”

His eyes lifted.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Because forgiveness means I no longer carry your mistake with me.”

She paused.

“But forgiveness doesn’t mean returning to the same place where I was hurt.”

Lucas understood.

Too late.

The woman who once waited under his umbrella during a storm no longer needed someone to shelter her.

She had learned how to stand in the rain alone.

Before leaving, Lucas took something from his pocket.

A small silk scarf.

The one he had kept for years.

“I found your initials.”

Amelia looked at it.

The embroidery was almost invisible.

A small “A.”

A secret she had never told him.

“I know.”

Lucas’s voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She smiled sadly.

“Because I shouldn’t have to prove that I loved you.”

“And I shouldn’t have to prove that I saved you.”

The silence between them was gentle.

Not painful.

Just final.

Lucas kept the scarf.

But he knew it no longer belonged to a love story.

It belonged to a lesson.

A lesson he learned after losing the person who had always been there.

The girl who entered the storm for him was gone.

The woman who walked away from him had finally found herself.

And this time…

there was no umbrella big enough to bring her back.
