PART 2: THE WIFE WHO STOPPED HIDING

For the first time in three years of marriage, I didn’t wait for Lucas Moretti to come home.

I didn’t prepare dinner.

I didn’t check his schedule.

I didn’t wonder if Isabel needed him more than I did.

I simply went back to my apartment.

The apartment that was legally mine.

The one I had almost forgotten existed because after marrying Lucas, I spent most of my time living in his house, following his rules, protecting a secret that was never supposed to hurt me.

That night, I took off the necklace Lucas gave me on our wedding anniversary.

A necklace that had never appeared in public.

Because according to him:

—Sofia, the timing isn’t right.

—Isabel is still recovering.

—People will misunderstand.

At first, I believed him.

Because love sometimes makes people accept things they would never tolerate for themselves.

But that night, looking at my reflection in the mirror, I finally understood.

I wasn’t protecting Isabel.

I was protecting Lucas from having to choose.

And he had chosen.

Every single time.

The next morning, my lawyer arrived.

I had called him at seven.

He looked surprised when he saw the documents on the table.

—Mrs. Moretti…

I smiled slightly.

—Don’t call me that for long.

He froze.

—Are you sure?

I looked out the window.

The city was waking up.

People were going to work.

People were falling in love.

People were starting over.

—Prepare everything.

—The divorce agreement.

My lawyer remained silent for a moment.

Because everyone knew one thing about Lucas Moretti.

He never lost.

Not in business.

Not in negotiations.

Not in relationships.

Especially not when it involved Isabel.

But there was something he didn’t understand.

A person who has been ignored for too long eventually stops asking to be seen.

At noon, Lucas came to the studio.

Everyone immediately became nervous.

The investor had arrived.

The powerful man who could decide the future of any project had entered.

But this time, I didn’t move toward him.

I didn’t smile.

I didn’t call him husband.

I simply continued reviewing the script.

Lucas noticed.

His expression changed.

—Sofia.

I looked up.

—Mr. Moretti.

The entire room became silent.

Everyone understood something was wrong.

Because no one called Lucas like that.

Especially not me.

He walked closer.

—Come with me.

—I am working.

His jaw tightened.

—We need to talk.

I closed the script.

—About what?

His eyes became colder.

—About your attitude yesterday.

I almost laughed.

My attitude.

Not my role being stolen.

Not my marriage being hidden.

Not the fact that my husband destroyed someone’s career to protect another woman.

My attitude.

—Lucas, I think you misunderstood something.

—What?

—I am an actress on this project.

—You are the investor.

—Those are our professional identities.

He stared at me.

For a moment, I saw confusion.

Because he was used to me understanding him before he explained.

This time, I didn’t.

—Sofia, don’t make this complicated.

I looked at him.

—You made it complicated three years ago.

His face changed.

The words reached somewhere he didn’t expect.

That evening, Lucas returned home earlier than usual.

For the first time in months.

Maybe years.

He waited for me.

But I didn’t go back.

Instead, I went to the Moretti family mansion.

Not secretly.

Not through the back door.

Not as someone who had to hide.

I walked through the main entrance.

The servants froze.

Lucas’ parents stood up immediately.

Because they knew exactly who I was.

The woman their son married.

The woman who had disappeared behind the shadow of his past.

His mother looked uncomfortable.

—Sofia…

I smiled politely.

—Mrs. Moretti.

She looked at my empty ring finger.

Her expression changed.

—Where is your ring?

I placed it on the table.

The sound was soft.

But everyone heard it.

—I returned it.

Silence.

Lucas’ father looked at me.

—What happened?

I didn’t answer immediately.

I opened my phone.

I played the recording.

Lucas talking to his secretary.

Protect Isabel.

Erase all connections.

Destroy the rumors.

Everyone listened.

No one spoke.

When the recording ended, Lucas’ mother covered her mouth.

Not because she was surprised that he protected Isabel.

Everyone knew that.

She was shocked because she finally understood who had been sacrificed.

Me.

Lucas’ wife.

Lucas arrived twenty minutes later.

Someone must have called him.

He entered the living room and stopped.

His eyes went to the ring on the table.

Then to me.

—Sofia.

I looked at him calmly.

—We need to talk.

He walked toward me.

—You shouldn’t have done this.

I raised my eyebrows.

—Done what?

—Humiliated me in front of my family.

A strange calm filled me.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still thinking about himself.

—Lucas.

I paused.

—Do you know what the saddest thing is?

He didn’t answer.

—It’s not that you love Isabel.

His eyes moved slightly.

—It’s that you never thought loving her would hurt me.

The room became silent.

—You believed I would always understand.

—Always wait.

—Always forgive.

I looked directly at him.

—But you forgot one thing.

—I’m not someone standing outside your life.

—I am your wife.

His face turned pale.

Because those words were simple.

But they were the truth he had avoided for years.

The next day, the entertainment industry received unexpected news.

The Moretti Group announced that all future projects would be reviewed independently.

No special arrangements.

No private favors.

No hidden decisions.

The role that had been taken from me was returned.

Not because Lucas forced it.

Because the director finally admitted the truth.

It had always been my role.

My work.

My achievement.

Not a gift.

Not a favor.

Three days later, Lucas came to find me.

Not as an investor.

Not as the powerful man everyone feared.

Just as Lucas.

He stood outside my apartment.

Without assistants.

Without bodyguards.

Without pride.

—Sofia.

I opened the door.

But I didn’t invite him in.

—I know I was wrong.

I remained silent.

—Isabel was someone I wanted to protect because I felt responsible for her.

He lowered his head.

—But I forgot that protecting someone else shouldn’t mean hurting my wife.

I looked at him.

For the first time, he sounded sincere.

But sincerity did not erase years.

—Lucas.

He looked up.

—Do you know when I stopped being angry?

He frowned.

—When?

—When I realized I no longer wanted you to choose me.

His face changed.

Because that was the answer he feared most.

I continued:

—A marriage shouldn’t need someone to fight for their place.

—A wife shouldn’t have to compete with a memory.

His eyes became red.

—Can we start again?

I looked at the man I once loved more than myself.

Then I looked at the life I had finally chosen.

—I don’t know.

A long silence passed.

—Maybe one day I can forgive you.

—But I can’t go back to being the woman who waited.

The door slowly closed.

And this time…

Lucas Moretti was the one standing outside.

For the first time, he understood what it felt like to be hidden.

To be left waiting.

To wonder if someone would ever choose him.

But I no longer needed him to understand my pain.

Because the moment I stopped fighting for his attention…

I finally became visible to myself.
