PART 3: THE TRUTH THAT BROKE THE EMPIRE

Ethan stared at the divorce papers for a long time.

The room was silent.

Only the sound of the hospital machines remained.

For ten years, he had believed that no matter what happened, Grace would always be there.

He believed apologies could fix anything.

He believed love was something that could be spent without limits.

But now, for the first time, he saw the woman lying in front of him as someone he could actually lose.

Not because she was angry.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she had finally stopped waiting.

—Grace, please.

His voice was lower than before.

Not the voice of the powerful CEO who commanded hundreds of employees.

Just a man begging the woman he destroyed.

I looked at him.

—What do you want me to say, Ethan?

He froze.

Because he had no answer.

For years, whenever he hurt me, he always expected the same ending.

I cried.

He apologized.

I forgave.

The cycle continued.

But this time was different.

This time there was no anger left.

Only exhaustion.

—You said it was an accident.

My voice was quiet.

—But accidents happen once.

I looked directly at him.

—Choosing another woman again and again is not an accident.

Ethan lowered his head.

He couldn’t deny it.

The investigation continued for several days.

Serena Song was no longer the innocent woman everyone believed she was.

The evidence revealed that she had manipulated Ethan for years.

She knew exactly what to say.

She knew how to make him feel admired.

She knew how to turn every mistake into someone else’s fault.

And Ethan had allowed it.

Because Serena gave him something he wanted.

A world where he was always right.

Where nobody questioned him.

Where his ego was never challenged.

But Grace had always done the opposite.

She reminded him when he was wrong.

She pushed him to become better.

She stood beside him when his company almost collapsed.

And that was the reason he slowly stopped appreciating her.

Because he thought the person who loved him the most would never leave.

One week later, Ethan returned to the company.

But everything had changed.

The board members were waiting.

The confidential information leak had damaged several major partnerships.

Investors were demanding answers.

The same people who once praised Ethan now questioned his decisions.

For the first time in his career, Ethan understood something.

A person could build an empire.

But one wrong choice could destroy everything.

His assistant placed a document on the table.

—Mr. Lu.

Ethan looked up.

—What is it?

The assistant hesitated.

—The investigation also found something about Mrs. Shen.

Ethan immediately stood.

—What?

The assistant opened the file.

Inside were documents from ten years ago.

Contracts.

Investment records.

Ownership transfers.

Ethan’s expression changed.

Because he recognized the signatures.

Grace.

All of them belonged to Grace.

Ten years earlier, when Ethan’s company was struggling, he thought he succeeded because of his own ability.

He thought he survived because he was talented.

But the truth was different.

Before they married, Grace had secretly invested in his company.

Not through her family.

Not through her father’s influence.

Through her own name.

She had studied his business plan.

She had corrected the risks.

She had introduced investors who believed in him.

But she never took credit.

Because she didn’t want him to think she loved him because of money.

She wanted him to believe he succeeded because he was capable.

The woman he thought was standing behind him…

Was the reason he was standing there at all.

That night, Ethan returned to the hospital.

Grace was awake.

She was reading medical reports.

He stood by the door.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Finally:

—Why didn’t you tell me?

I didn’t look up.

—Tell you what?

—Everything.

I closed the file.

—Would it have changed anything?

Ethan couldn’t answer.

Because deep inside, he knew.

If he had known Grace was powerful…

If he had known her family could influence entire industries…

Maybe he would have treated her differently.

And that realization hurt him more than anything.

Because it meant he hadn’t loved her simply as Grace.

He had loved the version of her that made him feel important.

—I’m sorry.

The words finally came.

Simple.

Broken.

But too late.

I looked at him.

—Do you know what hurt me the most?

Ethan waited.

—Not Serena.

His eyes moved.

—Not the accident.

—Not even the divorce.

I touched my stomach gently.

—It was knowing that when I needed you the most, you never thought of me first.

His eyes turned red.

—Grace…

—The man I married would have protected me.

I paused.

—But the man standing here only regrets losing me.

Ethan felt like those words cut deeper than any accusation.

Because they were true.

Months passed.

Grace gave birth safely.

A healthy baby girl.

The entire Shen family celebrated.

The child became the center of everyone’s attention.

Ethan heard the news from a distance.

He didn’t force his way into their lives.

He didn’t demand forgiveness.

For once, he understood that love was not ownership.

If Grace didn’t want him there…

He had no right to enter.

A year later, Ethan saw Grace again.

Not in a hospital.

Not during a crisis.

At a charity event.

She was standing under the lights.

Confident.

Peaceful.

Happy.

The same woman.

Yet completely different.

Their eyes met.

This time, Ethan didn’t rush toward her.

He simply smiled.

—You look well.

Grace nodded.

—You too.

A simple conversation.

Between two people who once meant everything to each other.

After a moment, Ethan asked:

—Does she have a name?

Grace looked toward the little girl beside her.

A soft smile appeared.

—Emma.

Ethan’s eyes became emotional.

But he didn’t ask to hold her.

He didn’t ask for another chance.

Because he finally understood.

Some things cannot be repaired by regret.

Only by changing.

Before leaving, Grace stopped.

She looked back at him.

—Ethan.

—Yes?

A pause.

—Thank you.

He was surprised.

—For what?

She smiled faintly.

—For reminding me that I should never lose myself trying to save someone else.

Then she walked away.

Ethan stood there watching her disappear.

Years ago, he thought losing Grace would destroy him.

Now he understood something different.

Grace had not destroyed his life.

She had given him a chance to finally see the person he had become.

The sea had answered her call that day.

It had saved her life.

But the greatest rescue was not from the waves.

It was from a love that had slowly been drowning her.
