PART 2: THE AUDIT THAT ENDED HIS DREAM

The next morning, Daniel Zhou woke up believing he was still in control.

He sent me a message while drinking his coffee.

“I’m going directly to the company. There is an important meeting today.”

I looked at the screen.

Five years ago, that message would have made me prepare his favorite breakfast.

Today, it only made me smile.

Because he didn’t know what kind of meeting was waiting for him.

At eight thirty, I entered the headquarters again.

But this time, I wasn’t wearing the gray suit of an old auditor.

I wore a black suit.

No glasses.

Hair loose.

The receptionist who ignored me the day before immediately stood up.

Her face changed completely.

—President Zhao…

I raised my hand.

—Don’t announce me yet.

The entire building still believed I was just the president’s daughter who rarely appeared.

I wanted Daniel to experience the moment when the truth arrived without warning.

At nine o’clock, the executive meeting began.

Daniel sat at the main table.

Sophia sat beside him.

Too confident.

Too comfortable.

She was already acting like the future owner of everything.

—Before we begin today’s report—Daniel said proudly—I want everyone to welcome our new marketing director.

Applause filled the room.

Sophia smiled.

Then the door opened.

Everyone turned.

The secretary’s voice trembled.

—President Zhao has arrived.

Daniel stopped.

The smile disappeared from his face.

For several seconds, he didn’t recognize me.

Then his expression changed.

—Evelyn?

I walked calmly to the table.

—Good morning, Director Zhou.

I placed a folder in front of him.

—We need to discuss the audit results.

The room became silent.

Sophia’s face lost color.

Daniel forced a laugh.

—Why are you here?

I opened the folder.

—As a shareholder.

—As a member of the board.

—And as the person who requested an internal investigation into your recent financial decisions.

His fingers tightened.

—What investigation?

I looked directly at him.

“The apartment purchase at River Crown.”

“The unexplained transfers.”

“The hiring process of Director Su.”

Every word made his expression darker.

Sophia suddenly stood.

—Miss Zhao, are you misunderstanding something?

I turned to her.

—No.

—I understand everything.

I pressed the remote.

The screen behind me lit up.

The first image appeared.

Daniel and Sophia in his office.

The second.

The apartment contract.

The third.

The financial transfers.

No one spoke.

Daniel looked at me.

Not as his wife.

But as an enemy he had underestimated.

—Evelyn, listen to me.

I smiled slightly.

—Listen to you?

—For five years, I listened to you.

—When you said you were busy.

—When you said you had dinner with clients.

—When you said I was too suspicious.

I closed the folder.

“Today, you will listen to me.”

Sophia suddenly grabbed Daniel’s arm.

—Daniel, say something.

He didn’t move.

Because for the first time, he understood something.

The woman he had been hiding from was not powerless.

She was the person who could decide his future.

My father’s lawyer entered the room.

Everyone stood.

He placed a document on the table.

—Director Zhou, these are the preliminary legal notices.

Daniel stared.

—Legal notices?

I answered calmly.

—For misappropriation of company resources.

—For conflict of interest.

—And for violating the marital agreement.

His face turned pale.

—You would do this to me?

I looked at him.

The question almost made me laugh.

—No, Daniel.

—You did this to yourself.

That evening, Daniel came home.

For the first time in years, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

He stood at the door holding the divorce papers.

—Evelyn.

I didn’t look up from my book.

—What?

His voice became softer.

—I made a mistake.

I turned the page.

—Which one?

He froze.

Because there were too many.

—Sophia means nothing.

I smiled.

—Yesterday she was worth an apartment.

—Today she means nothing?

Daniel lowered his head.

—I thought you would never find out.

That sentence hurt more than the betrayal.

Not because he cheated.

But because he truly believed the only problem was being discovered.

I stood.

—Daniel.

He looked at me.

—Do you remember our wedding?

His eyes moved slightly.

—You promised my father you would protect me.

I walked closer.

—But you spent five years trying to prove that I needed you.

I placed the divorce papers on the table.

—When the truth was that you needed me.

He couldn’t answer.

For the first time since I met him, Daniel Zhou had nothing to say.

Three months later, the company completed the final investigation.

Daniel lost his position.

Sophia disappeared from the business world.

The apartment was returned.

The accounts were recovered.

My father finally learned everything.

He sat quietly for a long time after hearing the story.

Then he said:

—I always wondered when you would stop protecting someone who didn’t protect you.

I smiled.

—I loved him.

My father nodded.

—And now?

I looked out the window at the city.

—Now I love myself more.

That day, I removed the last reminder of my marriage.

Not the wedding ring.

Not the photographs.

Those were easy.

The hardest thing to remove was the belief that loving someone meant allowing them to hurt you.

Daniel once thought he had married a woman who would always forgive him.

He was wrong.

He had married Evelyn Zhao.

And Evelyn Zhao never lost.

She only waited until the right moment to make her move.
