PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED BEING HIS SECOND CHOICE

Nathan Song thought my silence was temporary.

He thought that after a few days, I would return to my old self.

The Lena who waited downstairs for him.

The Lena who remembered every small detail about him.

The Lena who accepted excuses because she loved him too much to question them.

He was wrong.

Because the woman who had spent years chasing him no longer existed.

When Nathan came to find me that afternoon, he looked different.

For the first time, there was uncertainty in his eyes.

—Lena, what happened to you?

I looked at him calmly.

The question almost made me laugh.

What happened to me?

Nothing.

That was the problem.

Nothing had happened.

I had simply finally opened my eyes.

—Nothing happened, Nathan.

He frowned.

—Then why are you acting like this?

I looked at the hand he tried to reach toward me.

The same hand that had held Vivian’s umbrella.

The same hand that had opened car doors for another woman.

The same hand that had never once held mine with that kind of tenderness.

I stepped back.

—Because I remembered who I am.

His expression changed.

He didn’t understand.

How could he?

For years, he had only seen the version of me that existed around him.

The girl who loved him.

The girl who waited.

The girl who always forgave.

He never wondered what happened when that girl finally got tired.

—Lena, Vivian and I are just friends.

I smiled.

A few months ago, those words would have destroyed me.

Now they sounded meaningless.

—You don’t need to explain.

Nathan stared at me.

—You don’t believe me?

—No.

My answer surprised him.

It surprised me too.

Because the old Lena would have searched for proof.

She would have analyzed every message.

Every expression.

Every excuse.

But the new Lena already knew the truth.

A person who loved you would never make you feel like you were competing for their attention.

—Then what do you want?

I looked at him.

That was the first time I truly asked myself that question.

What did I want?

Not Nathan.

Not his apologies.

Not his attention after Vivian returned.

I wanted the version of myself that I had lost while trying to become someone he would choose.

—I want my life back.

Nathan became silent.

For a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something.

But before he could, my phone rang.

It was Ethan Jiang.

I answered.

And for some reason, Nathan’s expression changed when he heard his voice.

—Are you with Ethan?

The question came out sharper than expected.

I looked at him.

Interesting.

After all this time, he finally cared.

—Yes.

His jaw tightened.

—You moved on that quickly?

I almost laughed.

Moved on?

No.

I had simply stopped standing still.

—I didn’t move on, Nathan.

I paused.

—I woke up.

That night, I met Ethan at a small restaurant near the university.

He didn’t ask about Nathan.

He didn’t criticize him.

He didn’t try to convince me that I deserved better.

He simply placed a cup of tea in front of me.

The same way he had handed me tissues in the hallway.

Quietly.

Without demanding anything.

—Why are you always kind to me? —I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

—Because you always forget to be kind to yourself.

Those words stayed with me.

Because Nathan had spent years receiving my love.

But Ethan noticed my pain.

There was a difference.

A few days later, rumors started spreading around the university circle.

Vivian and Nathan were seen together everywhere.

People said their old love had finally returned.

Everyone expected me to suffer.

They expected the abandoned girlfriend to collapse.

But I didn’t.

I returned to my research.

I accepted new opportunities.

I started spending time with people who made me feel like myself again.

And slowly, I realized something terrifying.

My life had been much bigger than Nathan.

I had just made him the center of it.

One month later, Nathan came to my office.

He looked tired.

Not the confident man everyone admired.

Just a man who had lost something.

—Lena.

I looked up.

—What happened?

He hesitated.

—Vivian left.

I said nothing.

He seemed surprised by my reaction.

—That’s it?

I closed my laptop.

—What did you expect me to say?

Nathan lowered his eyes.

—You used to care.

I looked at him.

—Yes.

A pause.

—I cared so much that I forgot you weren’t choosing me.

His face changed.

Because that was the first time someone had said the truth without trying to protect him.

—Lena, I realized something.

I waited.

—When Vivian came back, I thought I was still in love with her.

He swallowed.

—But when you stopped looking for me…

His voice became quiet.

—I realized I was used to being loved by you.

I looked away.

Because that confession would have destroyed me before.

Now it only made me sad.

—Nathan.

He looked at me.

—You didn’t lose me when Vivian returned.

I paused.

—You lost me when you made me feel like I had to compete for my own boyfriend.

He had no answer.

Because there was none.

Before leaving, Nathan stopped at the door.

—Do you hate me?

I thought about it.

Then shook my head.

—No.

His eyes showed a small hope.

But my next words ended it.

—I just don’t need you anymore.

After he left, I sat quietly.

Years ago, I would have cried.

Today, I didn’t.

Because losing Nathan was not losing love.

It was losing an illusion.

Months passed.

My relationship with Ethan changed slowly.

Not like a dramatic story.

Not like a sudden confession.

It grew through small things.

Conversations.

Support.

Respect.

The things I had spent years begging another person to give me.

One evening, Ethan and I walked through the same street where I had once waited for Nathan with a melted cake.

I stopped.

He noticed.

—What happened?

I smiled.

—Nothing.

Then I looked ahead.

—I’m just remembering someone I used to be.

Ethan didn’t ask questions.

He simply walked beside me.

And for the first time, I understood something.

The greatest revenge was never making someone regret losing you.

The greatest revenge was building a life where you no longer cared whether they regretted it.

Nathan Song had once been the person I thought I could never lose.

But when I finally lost him…

I found myself.
