PART 2: THE DAY I STOPPED WAITING

Three months after Elliot was born, Adrian began trying to become the husband he should have been from the beginning.

He woke up when the baby cried.

He bought a crib.

He learned how to change diapers.

Every afternoon, he returned with something for me.

Flowers.

Fruit.

Sometimes the dessert I used to love.

But I had changed.

One evening, he placed a small box beside my coffee.

—Open it.

Inside was a delicate necklace.

—I remember you wanted this before the wedding.

I closed the box.

—That was before.

His smile disappeared.

—Emma, I’m trying.

—I know.

—Then why won’t you give me a chance?

I looked at him for a long time.

—Because I already gave you one.

Silence.

—You just weren’t there to receive it.

His eyes reddened.

—Camille is out of danger now.

—I know.

—I stayed because she had nobody.

I nodded.

—And when I was bleeding on an operating table, I had nobody too.

He couldn’t answer.

That night, I placed the divorce papers on the dining table.

Adrian stared at them.

—You really mean it?

—Yes.

His hand trembled as he picked them up.

—What about Elliot?

—You’ll always be his father.

—And you?

I smiled sadly.

—I will finally be his mother without waiting for his father to remember us.

He signed the papers two days later.

Not because he wanted to.

Because, for the first time, he understood that love could not be demanded after being neglected.

Months passed.

I moved with Elliot to a quiet coastal town.

I returned to work.

I slept better.

I laughed again.

And slowly, the life I thought Adrian had destroyed became a life I loved.

Six months later, a letter arrived.

It was from Camille.

She apologized.

She told me Adrian had never promised her a future.

She had mistaken his loyalty for love.

Then she wrote one final sentence:

“He never stopped loving you. He simply realized it after you stopped waiting.”

I folded the letter.

I didn’t hate her.

But I didn’t need her explanation either.

Because by then, I already knew the truth.

Adrian had returned when I was finally learning how to live without him.

And that was the cruelest lesson of all.

Sometimes people don’t understand your value when you’re beside them.

They understand it only after your absence becomes permanent.

Elliot was sleeping beside me that night.

I kissed his forehead and whispered:

“Your father lost his family the day he chose to leave us.”

Then I turned off the light.

For the first time, I wasn’t waiting for Adrian to come home.

I was already home.
