PART 2: THE FAMILY THAT LOST ANNA

My parents stood in front of the hotel reception for almost ten minutes.

They refused to believe the receptionist.

“That is impossible.”

My father’s voice was cold.

“My daughter Anna Harper’s wedding is today.”

The receptionist looked at the computer again.

“I’m sorry, sir. The wedding under the name Anna Harper Brooks was held yesterday.”

My mother’s face became pale.

“Yesterday?”

She repeated the word like she didn’t understand its meaning.

My brother Ryan immediately took out his phone.

He called me.

Once.

Twice.

Ten times.

But the only answer he received was the same:

The number you are calling is unavailable.

Because the old Anna…

The daughter who always answered.

The daughter who always forgave.

The daughter who always returned home after being hurt.

No longer existed.

When I woke up the morning after my wedding, the first thing I saw was Ethan sleeping beside me.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

Not the expensive dress.

Not the luxurious ceremony.

Not the guests.

Just this.

Waking up next to the person I loved.

I looked at his peaceful face.

And for the first time in many years…

I felt that I had chosen correctly.

Ethan opened his eyes.

“Good morning, Mrs. Brooks.”

I smiled.

“Good morning.”

He reached out and held my hand.

Then his expression changed slightly.

His thumb touched the faint red mark on my cheek.

The mark left by my mother.

His eyes became cold.

“Anna.”

I knew what he wanted to ask.

So I answered before he could.

“Don’t.”

He looked at me.

“I don’t want to spend our first day as husband and wife talking about them.”

A long silence passed.

Then Ethan lowered his head and kissed my hand.

“Okay.”

“But promise me something.”

“What?”

“Never let anyone make you feel like you are not important again.”

My eyes became warm.

Because those were the words I had waited my whole life to hear.

Meanwhile, my family was falling apart.

Not because they lost a wedding.

Because they finally realized something.

They had lost control over me.

My mother returned home from the hotel furious.

“This girl has gone crazy.”

She threw her bag onto the sofa.

“She actually hid her wedding from us.”

Ryan sat silently.

For the first time, he didn’t defend Ava.

Because even he knew.

The invitation had been there.

The date had been there.

The information had always been there.

They simply never cared enough to look.

My father remained quiet.

Then he asked:

“Where is Anna living now?”

Nobody answered.

Because they suddenly realized something terrifying.

They knew nothing.

Not her new address.

Not her new life.

Not even what Ethan did for work.

The daughter they thought would always be waiting…

Had already walked away.

A week later, Ava called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Anna.”

Her voice was soft.

“I heard you really got married.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t invite us.”

I looked out the window.

“I invited you.”

Silence.

“The invitation was placed outside my room for seven days.”

Ava stopped talking.

I continued:

“You walked past it every day.”

“Mom cleaned that area three times.”

“Ryan picked up packages next to it.”

“Nobody opened it.”

Her breathing became quieter.

“Anna…”

“What?”

“Are you blaming me too?”

I almost laughed.

Because even now.

Even after everything.

She still made herself the victim.

“No, Ava.”

“I’m not blaming you.”

“I’m just finally accepting reality.”

“What reality?”

“That in our family, I was never your sister.”

“I was always your replacement.”

The line went silent.

For years, everyone told me:

You are older.

You are stronger.

You can handle it.

But nobody ever asked:

Who takes care of the strong person?

Three months later, my life was completely different.

I returned to work.

I continued my career.

Ethan supported every decision I made.

He never asked me to sacrifice myself.

Never told me to endure.

Never compared me to anyone.

One evening, while we were having dinner, Ethan received a message.

He looked at the screen.

Then frowned.

“What happened?”

I asked.

He hesitated.

“It’s your brother.”

I looked up.

“Ryan?”

He nodded.

“He wants to meet you.”

I smiled slightly.

“Why?”

Ethan handed me the phone.

The message was simple.

Anna, we need to talk.

Ava’s wedding is canceled.

I stared at the words.

Canceled.

But I felt nothing.

No happiness.

No satisfaction.

Nothing.

Because revenge was never what I wanted.

I only wanted to be loved.

And now…

I had something better.

A life where I didn’t have to beg for it.

I replied:

I don’t think there is anything left to discuss.

A few seconds later, another message appeared.

From Ryan.

Anna.

Mom is sick.

She keeps saying she wants to see you.

My fingers stopped.

Not because I wanted to return.

But because a small part of me still remembered.

The woman who carried me when I was young.

The father who once held my hand.

The brother who once protected me.

Before they chose someone else over me.

I put the phone down.

Ethan looked at me.

“You don’t have to go.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“Then what will you do?”

I looked at the wedding photo on the wall.

The first photo of my new family.

The one I chose.

“I don’t know yet.”

“But this time…”

“I will make the decision for myself.”

And far away, my parents finally understood the truth.

They thought they were losing a daughter who would always come back.

But what they really lost…

Was the only person who had spent her entire life trying to belong to them.
