PART 2: THE HOUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY OWNED

The brass door handle slowly turned.

I closed my eyes for a second.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I wanted to remember that moment forever.

The moment when the people who had spent seventeen years taking everything from me finally walked into the room believing they still had control.

The door opened.

Mark entered first.

His expensive suit looked completely out of place in the cold hospital room.

Behind him was Dolores.

My mother-in-law.

The woman who had spent years calling me “lucky” because I married her son.

The woman who had forgotten every sacrifice I made.

But never forgot to ask what I could give her.

“Clare.”

Mark walked toward the bed.

His expression changed when he saw my eyes open.

For a brief second, panic flashed across his face.

Then he quickly hid it.

“You’re awake.”

I looked at him silently.

“Yes.”

My voice was weak.

But my mind had never been clearer.

Dolores stepped closer.

“How are you feeling?”

I almost laughed.

That question coming from her was almost an insult.

For seventeen years, I had cooked for her.

Cleaned for her.

Paid medical bills when she needed treatment.

I had driven her to every appointment.

Stayed awake through every difficult night.

And now, when I was lying in an ICU bed fighting for my life…

The first thing she thought about was my house.

“I’m tired,” I answered.

Mark sighed.

“Clare, don’t make things harder than they need to be.”

There it was.

The same sentence.

The sentence he used whenever I had feelings he didn’t want to deal with.

“Harder?” I whispered.

He avoided my eyes.

“You heard the doctor. You need rest.”

Dolores suddenly looked around the room.

Then she lowered her voice.

“About the house…”

I stared at her.

She continued.

“Since you are in this condition, we should discuss arrangements.”

Arrangements.

Such a beautiful word for greed.

“What arrangements?”

Mark shifted uncomfortably.

“Mom is just worried about the future.”

“The future?”

I looked at my husband.

“My future?”

Neither answered.

That silence told me everything.

They weren’t waiting for me to recover.

They were waiting for me to disappear.

I closed my eyes.

And remembered the day Mark proposed.

He held my hand and promised:

“I will protect you for the rest of my life.”

How ironic.

The only thing he protected…

Was himself.

The next morning at nine.

The door opened again.

But this time, Mark wasn’t there.

A woman entered carrying a black leather folder.

“Clare Bennett?”

“Yes.”

She approached my bed.

“I’m Rebecca Sloan.”

My father’s chief attorney.

The moment she said her name, Mark’s entire family would have panicked.

Because Rebecca Sloan didn’t handle ordinary cases.

She handled battles.

She opened the folder.

“Your father asked me to begin immediately.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

She looked at my medical condition.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

Her expression softened slightly.

“Then tell me everything.”

So I did.

Seventeen years.

Every sacrifice.

Every transfer of money.

Every time I covered for Mark.

Every time I helped Dolores.

Every hidden account.

Every property document.

Rebecca listened quietly.

Then she placed one paper on the table.

“The house.”

I looked at it.

The deed.

My name.

Only my name.

“Your father purchased this property before your marriage and transferred ownership to you.”

“Yes.”

“Your husband never had any legal claim.”

I smiled faintly.

“Neither did his mother.”

Rebecca closed the folder.

“Then we begin there.”

Three days later.

The hospital room was no longer silent.

Mark arrived with Jennifer.

The woman he planned to marry after I died.

She stood beside him confidently.

Almost like she was already the new owner of my life.

“Clare,” Mark said.

“We need to talk.”

I looked at Jennifer.

Then back at him.

“About what?”

His expression became serious.

“The house.”

Of course.

Not my health.

Not my pain.

The house.

“I think it’s time we discuss transferring ownership.”

I stared at him.

Then I smiled.

A real smile.

The first one in months.

“Transferring ownership?”

Jennifer frowned.

“Clare, don’t misunderstand. Mark just wants everything handled peacefully.”

Peacefully.

Another beautiful word.

I reached for the folder beside my bed.

Then I placed a document in front of him.

Mark picked it up.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

“Read it.”

His eyes moved across the page.

Slowly.

Then quickly.

Then his hands started shaking.

“No.”

I watched him understand.

The house wasn’t his.

The money wasn’t his.

The future he had already planned…

Never existed.

Dolores grabbed the paper.

Her face turned pale.

“This is impossible!”

I looked at her calmly.

“No.”

“It was always like this.”

“You just never bothered to know.”

Mark stared at me.

“You lied to me?”

I almost couldn’t believe those words.

“You thought I was poor.”

“You thought everything I had belonged to you.”

“You thought my kindness meant weakness.”

I leaned back against the pillow.

“But I never lied.”

“You simply never cared enough to ask who I really was.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Rebecca stepped forward.

“And Mr. Mark Carter, we also need to discuss the financial records.”

His expression froze.

“What records?”

“The money withdrawn from Clare’s accounts.”

Jennifer’s face changed.

Mark looked away.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Because he finally understood.

The woman he was waiting to lose…

Was the only person who could destroy everything he had built.

I looked at him.

“Mark.”

He raised his head.

“You spent seventeen years thinking I needed you.”

I paused.

“But the truth is…”

“I was the reason you had everything.”

The monitor beside me continued beeping.

My body was still weak.

But my voice was steady.

“Now I want to see what your life looks like without me.”
