PART 2: THE PRICE OF HIS BETRAYAL

Eduardo Rodríguez stared at the disconnected call for several seconds.

He expected anger.

He expected tears.

He expected Camila to call him back, apologize and say she had overreacted.

Because that was always how it happened.

For six years, Camila had been the woman who fixed everything.

When his family criticized her, she stayed silent.

When his mother demanded more expensive gifts, Camila worked extra hours.

When Valeria needed help, Camila always found a way.

Eduardo believed that patience had no limit.

Until that afternoon.

“Where did she go?”

His mother’s voice came from the passenger seat.

Eduardo looked at the empty road ahead.

“She said she wasn’t coming.”

Valeria, sitting in the back, laughed softly.

“She is finally showing her true colors.”

“She always pretended to be perfect, but in the end, she couldn’t handle a simple family Christmas.”

Eduardo didn’t answer.

Something felt strange.

Camila had never spoken to him like that.

Not once.

Even during their worst arguments, she always looked for a way to save their marriage.

But this time…

She sounded like someone who had already left.

At the airport, Camila sat beside Mateo while waiting for their flight.

Her son was excited.

“Mommy, are we really going to see the big castle?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

“And the famous mouse?”

“Yes.”

Mateo hugged his dinosaur tightly.

For the first time in months, Camila saw her son smile without worrying about his father’s mood.

That alone was worth everything.

But before boarding, her lawyer called.

“Mrs. Mendoza.”

“Did you receive the documents?”

“Yes.”

There was a pause.

“I reviewed the financial movements you sent me.”

“And?”

The lawyer’s voice became serious.

“There is something you need to know.”

Camila looked through the airport window.

“What?”

“Your husband’s transfers weren’t only from the family account.”

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“What do you mean?”

“Someone has been moving money from your company’s subsidiary.”

Her expression changed.

“That is impossible.”

“Your signature appears on some documents.”

The cold calm inside her disappeared for a second.

“My signature?”

“Yes.”

“But I never signed those papers.”

Silence.

Then the lawyer spoke carefully.

“Camila, I think this is bigger than a simple case of financial irresponsibility.”

She closed her eyes.

Six years of marriage.

Six years believing Eduardo was only selfish.

But now…

Maybe he was something much worse.

The next morning, Eduardo arrived at their house.

He expected to find Camila waiting.

Instead, the house was completely silent.

The Christmas decorations were still there.

The lights were still blinking.

But half of Camila and Mateo’s belongings were gone.

He walked upstairs quickly.

The closet was empty on one side.

Mateo’s toys were missing.

The documents from their family safe were gone.

On the table was only one envelope.

His name was written on it.

Eduardo opened it.

Inside was a copy of the bank investigation request.

The separation documents.

And one handwritten note.

“I spent six years trying to understand why I was never enough.”

“Now I understand.”

“I was never the problem.”

Eduardo’s face turned pale.

At the bottom of the page was one final sentence:

“Ask your mother why she knows about the missing money.”

For the first time, Eduardo felt fear.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

Because his mother had always protected him.

Covered his mistakes.

Solved his problems.

But why would Camila write her name?

Why would she mention his mother?

His phone suddenly rang.

It was Valeria.

“Eduardo!”

Her voice was nervous.

“Mom wants you to come home immediately.”

“Why?”

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

“Because someone came looking for her.”

“Who?”

“The police.”

Eduardo froze.

Three days later, Camila arrived in Paris.

She stood in front of the hotel window, watching the city lights.

Mateo was sleeping peacefully behind her.

Her old life was thousands of kilometers away.

But she knew this wasn’t the end.

It was only the beginning.

Her lawyer sent another message.

“Camila, we found the person who approved the transfers.”

She opened it.

The name appeared on the screen.

Her heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t Eduardo.

It wasn’t Valeria.

It wasn’t even her mother-in-law.

It was someone she had trusted completely.

Someone who had been inside her home.

Someone who had smiled at her every day for six years.

Then another message arrived.

“There’s more.”

“Your husband didn’t abandon you because of his family.”

“He was trying to escape before you discovered the truth.”

Camila looked at the message.

Slowly, she sat down.

Because suddenly she realized something terrifying:

Eduardo Rodríguez had not left her behind.

He had been running away from her.

And he never imagined that the woman he abandoned at Christmas…

Would become the person who finally exposed everything.
