PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE FLIGHT

I sat in the hotel room that night and looked at the documents spread across the table.

The transfer records.

The company information.

The messages from Michael.

Everything was connected.

For five years, I had believed my biggest problem was another woman.

I thought Vanessa Sun had stolen my husband’s attention.

I thought she had taken away the tenderness that used to belong to me.

But I was wrong.

The betrayal was much deeper.

Michael wasn’t only hiding a relationship.

He was hiding a plan.

The next morning, I received another call from the company’s legal department.

“Mrs. Zheng, we need your help.”

I frowned.

“My help?”

“Yes.”

The lawyer lowered his voice.

“Michael’s access records show that he used confidential company information before the transfer.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What kind of information?”

“Client contracts.”

“Financial forecasts.”

“Internal investment plans.”

A cold feeling spread through my body.

This wasn’t an impulsive mistake.

This was prepared.

For a long time.

“Are you sure?”

The lawyer paused.

“We have evidence.”

“Mr. Zheng and Miss Sun planned to resign after the Guangzhou trip.”

“Then they intended to leave the country.”

I looked out the window.

The city lights blurred in front of my eyes.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The extra trips.

The strange calls.

The sudden distance.

The way Michael stopped talking about our future.

He wasn’t just getting closer to Vanessa.

He was preparing a life without me.

And maybe…

Without consequences.

That afternoon, Michael finally came to the hotel.

When he entered, he still had the same expression.

Tired.

Regretful.

Like he was the victim.

“Laura.”

I didn’t answer.

He walked closer.

“Can you listen to me?”

I looked at him.

“Explain.”

His eyes moved.

“Vanessa and I…”

He stopped.

Then he sighed.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.”

I almost smiled.

“Not supposed to happen?”

“Michael.”

“You traveled together.”

“You slept with her on the plane.”

“You transferred company money.”

“And now you say it wasn’t supposed to happen?”

His face changed.

“How did you know about the money?”

I looked at him quietly.

That question told me everything.

Not denial.

Not shock.

Only fear.

“You are not worried that I misunderstood.”

“You are worried that I found out.”

Michael became silent.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

“Laura, I can explain.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You had five years to explain.”

“Five years to tell me the truth.”

“But you chose to lie.”

He lowered his voice.

“I loved you.”

Those words once meant everything.

Now they sounded empty.

“Did you?”

I asked.

“Because the man who loved me would never make me the last person to know his plans.”

Michael looked away.

Then he said something that surprised me.

“Vanessa helped me when I was under pressure.”

I nodded.

“So you rewarded her.”

“That’s not what happened.”

“Then what happened?”

He had no answer.

Because some truths don’t need explanations.

They only need choices.

Two days later, the company announced an internal investigation.

Michael’s accounts were frozen.

Vanessa’s position was suspended.

The woman who once sat beside my husband on the plane disappeared from public view.

She no longer had the confidence she showed when she rested on his legs.

Because when everything was lost…

She finally realized she wasn’t the one Michael would protect.

A week later, Michael came to my house.

Our house.

The place where I once believed we would grow old together.

He stood at the door.

“Laura.”

I looked at him.

“Why are you here?”

“I want to fix this.”

I almost laughed.

“Fix what?”

“Our marriage.”

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I asked:

“Michael.”

“Do you miss me?”

He froze.

A simple question.

But he couldn’t answer.

Because maybe he didn’t miss me.

Maybe he missed the person who always forgave him.

The person who waited.

The person who made his life comfortable.

I stepped aside.

Not to let him in.

To leave the door open behind me.

“I already gave you everything.”

“Trust.”

“Time.”

“My youth.”

“But you treated all of it like something that would never disappear.”

His eyes turned red.

“I made a mistake.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“You did.”

“But some mistakes don’t only break things.”

“They reveal what was already broken.”

Michael lowered his head.

For a moment, I saw the man I married.

The man who once held my hand and promised forever.

But that man had been gone for a long time.

The divorce was completed three months later.

Michael kept trying to contact me.

Apologies.

Explanations.

Promises.

I ignored all of them.

Not because I hated him.

Because I no longer needed anything from him.

One year later, I built my own company.

The same determination I had used to save our marriage…

I used to rebuild my own life.

At an industry conference, I met Michael again.

He looked different.

Quieter.

Older.

He looked at me and smiled sadly.

“You seem happy.”

I nodded.

“I am.”

He looked down.

“I should have realized your value earlier.”

I smiled.

“Maybe.”

“But I shouldn’t have had to disappear for you to see it.”

He had no answer.

Because that was the truth.

Some people only recognize what they have after losing it.

But by then…

The person they lost has already learned how to live without them.

The woman who sat behind Michael on that plane…

Was not destroyed by betrayal.

She was awakened by it.

And the moment he chose another woman…

Was the moment I finally chose myself.
