PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE TRIP

The moment I landed in Helsinki, I turned off my phone.

For the first time in five years, I didn’t want to know where Adrian was.

I checked into the glass cabin alone.

Outside, snow covered the forest like a white blanket.

The Northern Lights appeared just after midnight.

Green light moved silently across the sky.

I stood beneath it alone.

And strangely, I didn’t feel lonely.

I felt free.

The next morning, I turned my phone back on.

There were forty-three missed calls.

Thirty-one from Adrian.

Eight from Jason.

Four from an unknown number.

Then I saw Adrian’s messages.

“Sophie, where are you?”

“Why aren’t you answering?”

“Please call me.”

“The doctor says Vanessa is fine.”

“Come home.”

I stared at the screen.

Then the unknown number sent a message.

“Don’t go home yet.”

A document followed.

I opened it.

My hands slowly became cold.

It was a copy of a hotel reservation.

Three months earlier.

Adrian and Vanessa.

Same hotel.

Same room.

Four nights.

The date was during the week Adrian had told me he was attending a business conference.

I kept scrolling.

There were photographs of receipts.

Restaurant bills.

A second hotel reservation.

Then a medical report.

Vanessa wasn’t suffering from the condition Adrian had always described.

Her doctor had written that her condition was stable and did not require constant supervision.

The message continued:

“Ask Adrian why he needed you to believe she was helpless.”

I stared at the screen for a long time.

Then I noticed something else.

The final document was a copy of an engagement ring purchase.

Two rings.

Same jeweler.

One registered under my name.

The other under Vanessa’s.

The purchase date was six months earlier.

My chest tightened.

The ring Adrian had promised to choose with me had already been purchased.

Not for me.

I laughed quietly.

So that’s why he suddenly wanted me to go home.

Not because he wanted to marry me.

Because he needed me out of the way.

I called the unknown number.

A woman answered.

—Sophie?

—Who are you?

—Someone who has been watching Adrian lie to you for a long time.

—Why are you helping me?

She was silent for a moment.

—Because Adrian isn’t the only person who betrayed you.

Before I could ask what she meant, the call ended.

I looked outside.

Snow continued falling.

For five years, I had believed Vanessa was the problem.

I was wrong.

Vanessa was only part of it.

The real problem was Adrian.

And now I had something I had never had before.

The truth.

When I returned home two weeks later, Adrian was waiting at the airport.

He looked exhausted.

The moment he saw me, he ran toward me.

—Sophie.

I stepped back.

He stopped.

—You’re safe.

—Yes.

—Why did you disappear?

I looked at him calmly.

—Because you gave me your place on the trip.

His face tightened.

—I made a mistake.

—No.

I shook my head.

—You made a choice.

He lowered his voice.

—I can explain everything.

—I know.

His expression changed.

—What do you know?

I smiled.

—About the hotels.

His face went completely still.

I continued:

—About the two rings.

—About Vanessa’s medical reports.

For the first time, Adrian had nothing to say.

I took the engagement ring he had once given me from my purse.

Then I placed it in his hand.

—You wanted me to go home so badly.

I stepped around him.

—Now you can have the whole house.

He grabbed my wrist.

—Sophie, please.

I looked down at his hand.

—Let go.

He did.

I walked away.

Behind me, Adrian whispered my name.

I didn’t turn around.

Because the Northern Lights had taught me something important.

Some dreams are beautiful precisely because they happen only once.

And some people are beautiful only until you finally see them clearly.
