PART 2: THE SECRET THAT RETURNED WITH HIM

The voice behind me made my fingers freeze over the keyboard.

I didn’t need to turn around.

Five years had passed.

But some voices never disappear.

Especially the ones that once made your heart break.

I slowly raised my head.

Lily was smiling.

—Ethan, you’re here.

The man standing behind her looked exactly like the person I remembered.

Except older.

More mature.

More confident.

Ethan Cole.

The same man who had once told me that he would never marry a woman like me.

But he wasn’t looking at Lily.

He was looking at me.

His eyes moved from my face to the ring on my finger.

Then to the documents on my desk.

Then back to me.

A strange silence filled the office.

—You know each other? Lily asked.

Before I could answer, Ethan spoke.

—We knew each other a long time ago.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I smiled politely.

—Mr. Cole and I were classmates.

Lily looked surprised.

—Really? I didn’t know.

Neither did she need to know.

Some stories were better left buried.

Ethan looked at me.

—You changed a lot.

I nodded.

—People change.

His eyes stayed on me.

—Apparently.

I understood what he meant.

Apparently, I had changed enough to have a husband.

A daughter.

A life without him.

I closed my laptop.

—Lily, you should go. Your boyfriend is waiting.

She smiled.

—Okay. See you tomorrow, Mia.

Ethan watched her leave.

Only when the door closed did he speak.

—Your husband.

I looked at him.

—What about him?

—Who is he?

I almost laughed.

Five years.

No contact.

No concern.

And now the first question he asked was about the man beside me.

—Why do you care?

His expression tightened.

—I’m just curious.

—Curiosity is strange coming from someone who once said I wasn’t the type of woman he wanted.

The room became silent.

For the first time, Ethan looked uncomfortable.

That sentence had followed him.

Even if he pretended it hadn’t.

—Mia…

I interrupted.

—Don’t.

I picked up my bag.

—Whatever happened five years ago is over.

I walked past him.

But before I reached the door, he said:

—Is your daughter’s father happy?

My hand stopped.

A question that sounded simple.

But somehow it carried something else.

I turned slightly.

—He loves her more than anything.

Ethan lowered his eyes.

Something flashed across his face.

Regret.

Maybe.

Or maybe just curiosity.

I didn’t stay to find out.

That night, I picked up my daughter from kindergarten.

The moment she saw me, she ran toward me.

“Mom!”

I opened my arms.

She jumped in happily.

—Did you miss me?

She nodded seriously.

—Dad said we can eat ice cream after dinner.

I smiled.

Her father.

The man who had given her the love she deserved.

The man who had never asked me to prove I was worthy.

The man who knew my past and still chose my future.

When we arrived home, he was already waiting.

—You’re late.

I smiled.

—Work.

He took my bag naturally.

Then looked at my expression.

—Something happened?

I hesitated.

Then said:

—Ethan came back.

His hand stopped.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

Because unlike Ethan, this man always noticed everything.

—Your old classmate?

I nodded.

—My old mistake.

He didn’t ask questions.

He just hugged me.

—You don’t have to explain anything you don’t want to explain.

And that was exactly why I loved him.

The next morning, Ethan called me into his office.

I already knew why.

—Sit down.

I remained standing.

—If this is about work, send it through HR.

His jaw tightened.

—You really hate me now?

I looked at him.

—No.

He seemed surprised.

—Then what?

I smiled.

—Nothing.

That answer hurt him.

Because hate meant I still cared.

Nothing meant he had become someone from a distant life.

Ethan stood.

—Five years ago, I was immature.

I didn’t respond.

—What I said…

He stopped.

For the first time, the arrogant man who always had an answer looked lost.

—It was cruel.

I nodded.

—Yes.

He looked at me.

—That’s all?

—What else should there be?

Silence.

Because he expected forgiveness.

He expected the old Mia.

The girl who waited.

The girl who loved him enough to accept anything.

She no longer existed.

Later that afternoon, I received a message.

From my husband.

“Come home early today. I prepared dinner.”

I smiled.

Then my phone rang again.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

—Are you Mia?

I frowned.

—Yes.

There was hesitation.

Then:

—I think you should know something about Ethan Cole.

My expression changed.

—Who are you?

The woman took a breath.

—Someone who knew him before you disappeared.

I stayed silent.

Then she said:

—The reason Ethan never married anyone after you…

I gripped the phone.

—What?

Her voice became quieter.

—Because he spent five years trying to find out why you left.

I looked out the window.

The city lights blurred.

But before I could answer, she added one more sentence:

—And Mia… he never knew the truth about your daughter.

My heart stopped.

Because there was one secret I had never told Ethan.

One secret that could change everything.

And now…

He was finally close enough to discover it.
