PART 2: THE SHERIFF WHO CHOSE THE WRONG ENEMY

I sat beside Emily’s hospital bed all night.

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I couldn’t.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the image of her lying there with both legs broken.

The woman who always told me not to worry.

The woman who packed my bags before every deployment.

The woman who smiled through every lonely night while I was thousands of miles away.

Someone had decided she was an easy target.

They were wrong.

Emily opened her eyes again just before sunrise.

“Blake…”

Her voice was weak.

I immediately leaned closer.

“I’m here.”

She looked toward the door.

“They’re watching.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

She grabbed my sleeve with all the strength she had left.

“Travis wasn’t trying to hurt me because of the land.”

“He wanted what I found.”

I looked at her.

“What did you find?”

For a few seconds, she hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Records.”

“Sheriff Mercer has been using his position to cover illegal property transfers for years.”

“The construction company wasn’t just buying land.”

“They were forcing people out.”

My expression hardened.

“How did you get the evidence?”

Emily swallowed.

“I worked at the county archives, Blake.”

“I saw documents that didn’t match.”

“Names changed.”

“Signatures appeared where they shouldn’t.”

“People disappeared from records.”

She closed her eyes.

“And when Travis realized I knew…”

“He tried to scare me into silence.”

My hands tightened.

But my voice stayed calm.

“What evidence do you have?”

“Not here.”

“Where?”

Emily looked at me.

“In a place they would never think to search.”

Before I could ask more, the hospital door opened.

Deputy Nolan walked in.

Two officers stood behind him.

“Mr. Carter.”

His voice sounded polite.

Too polite.

“Sheriff Mercer wants to speak with you again.”

I didn’t move.

“My wife just woke up.”

“This won’t take long.”

I looked at Emily.

She gave me the smallest nod.

Go.

I stood.

But before leaving, I whispered:

“Stay awake.”

“I’ll come back.”

Sheriff Mercer was waiting.

This time he wasn’t drinking coffee.

He was looking at photographs spread across his desk.

Pictures of me.

My military records.

My deployments.

My awards.

He smiled.

“So you’re not just some soldier.”

I sat down.

“You already knew that.”

“Yes.”

He tapped one of the files.

“Special operations.”

“Interesting.”

He leaned back.

“But you should understand something, Blake.”

“This is my county.”

“People here know who keeps them safe.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“They know who they are afraid of.”

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, anger flashed across his face.

“You think your uniform protects you?”

“No.”

I stood.

“My uniform doesn’t protect me.”

“It reminds me what happens when people abuse power.”

The room became silent.

Then Mercer laughed.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“Everyone who fights me makes the same mistake.”

“They think they can win.”

I walked toward the door.

“Sheriff.”

He looked up.

“You made yours already.”

When I returned to the hospital, Emily was gone.

The bed was empty.

The heart monitor was disconnected.

For one second, my mind refused to accept it.

Then I saw the nurse standing in the corner.

Terrified.

“What happened?”

She started crying.

“They transferred her.”

“Who authorized it?”

She looked down.

“Sheriff Mercer.”

The air around me became cold.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

She handed me a small piece of paper.

“Your wife left this before they took her.”

I opened it.

Only four words were written.

“Don’t trust the police.”

My jaw tightened.

They had made their move.

They thought removing Emily would make me panic.

They thought I would chase them blindly.

They didn’t know me.

I didn’t become an Army investigator by running after enemies.

I became one by making them believe they had already won.

I pulled out my phone.

One encrypted message.

One code.

One request.

“Activate protection protocol.”

Within seconds, a reply appeared.

“Identity confirmed.”

“Federal team notified.”

“Operation begins.”

I looked through the hospital window.

Outside, Sheriff Mercer’s men were still watching.

They thought they were controlling the situation.

They didn’t know that from this moment…

They were no longer hunting Emily Carter.

They were being investigated.

And by morning, the man who said he owned the police would discover something terrifying.

He didn’t own the law.

He had just placed himself directly in front of it.
