PART 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE RETURN

The next morning, the Valcárcel Group was already in chaos.

News spread across Madrid.

Confidential documents leaked.

Investors questioned the company’s stability.

The southern district project, the one that had taken years to prepare, was suspended indefinitely.

And the woman who had appeared everywhere beside Gabriel disappeared completely.

Clara Ríos.

Everyone believed she had won.

But she had made one mistake.

She underestimated Sofia Montero.

Because Sofia had never been just Gabriel’s wife.

Before the marriage agreement, before the Valcárcel name, before everyone saw her as a woman who only sat beside the CEO at events…

She was the person who had built her own company from nothing.

She knew numbers.

She knew contracts.

And most importantly…

She knew how people hid their crimes.

Gabriel placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of the leaked documents.

“I found something.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Clara didn’t act alone.”

I turned the pages.

There were transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Anonymous payments.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Álvaro Ríos.

Clara’s older brother.

My expression changed.

“Her own family?”

Gabriel nodded.

“Your suspicion was right. Clara came back because she wanted access to the Valcárcel Group.”

I looked at the documents.

“So the great love story everyone talked about…”

“Was just a business plan.”

Silence filled the room.

For years, everyone had told me the same thing.

Gabriel had never forgotten Clara.

Gabriel had married me because of an agreement.

Gabriel’s heart belonged to another woman.

But now I understood something.

The person who returned from Paris wasn’t a woman looking for lost love.

She was someone looking for a lost opportunity.

I closed the folder.

“Why didn’t you tell me from the beginning?”

Gabriel looked down.

And for the first time, I saw regret on his face.

“Because I was afraid.”

I almost laughed.

“Gabriel Valcárcel was afraid?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“Afraid that if I told you everything, you would leave.”

Those words surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because for three years I knew what people said about our marriage.”

He paused.

“And I knew I was the reason they were right.”

I didn’t answer.

Because he was.

Gabriel had respected me.

Protected me.

Taken care of me.

But he had never opened the door completely.

He had treated me like a valuable partner.

Not like his wife.

“I should have trusted you.”

His voice was low.

“I should have told you everything.”

I looked away.

“Yes.”

One word.

But this time, it hurt him.

Because he knew I was right.

That afternoon, we decided to fight back.

Not as an alliance.

Not because of our families.

But because we had both become targets.

Gabriel contacted the legal department.

I contacted my own team.

For the first time since our wedding, we worked together.

And it was strange.

Because we had always been good partners.

We just never realized we could become something more.

Three days later, we found Clara.

She was hiding in a private apartment outside Madrid.

But she wasn’t alone.

When Gabriel entered the room, Clara smiled.

Almost relieved.

“I knew you would come.”

Gabriel looked at her coldly.

“You betrayed the company.”

She laughed.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“She betrayed you.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Clara stepped closer.

“You really think Gabriel married you because he chose you?”

Silence.

“Your marriage was only a contract.”

“I know.”

My answer surprised her.

She smiled.

“Then you know you were never loved.”

Before I could respond, Gabriel spoke.

“Enough.”

Clara looked at him.

“You still protect her?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

“Yes.”

Her expression finally changed.

Because she realized something.

The man she thought she understood…

was no longer the same man.

Clara took a step back.

“You changed because of her.”

Gabriel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Then Clara laughed bitterly.

“You never said that to me.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Because I didn’t know it before.”

Those words ended everything.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were true.

The police arrived minutes later.

The evidence was enough.

Financial fraud.

Corporate sabotage.

Illegal information trading.

Clara’s perfect return to Madrid ended with handcuffs.

But the biggest surprise came afterward.

When the investigation revealed the person who had helped her.

A senior executive inside Valcárcel Group.

Someone Gabriel had trusted for ten years.

The entire scandal was finally exposed.

And the company survived.

But after everything ended, there was one thing left.

Us.

One night, Gabriel found me in the garden.

The same place where we had signed our marriage agreement years before.

“I have something for you.”

He handed me a small box.

I opened it.

Inside was a ring.

Not the one from our contract.

A different one.

Simple.

Elegant.

Personal.

“Gabriel…”

“I know.”

He stopped me.

“I know our marriage started as an agreement.”

“I know I spent years acting like respecting you was enough.”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“But it wasn’t.”

My fingers tightened around the ring.

“I don’t want a contract anymore.”

His voice became softer.

“I want a real marriage.”

I looked at him.

The man who had once been a stranger.

The man who had slowly become someone I couldn’t ignore.

“Do you love me?”

The question came quietly.

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

Because this time, he didn’t want to say something easy.

“I don’t know when it happened.”

“But somewhere between your coffee waiting for me every morning…”

“Your arguments about my terrible decisions…”

“And the way you always stood beside me even when everyone thought we were just a deal…”

He smiled slightly.

“I fell in love with you.”

For three years, I had waited for those words.

But when they finally came…

I realized something.

I no longer needed them to prove my worth.

Because I had already found my own.

I accepted the ring.

But I made one condition.

“One more contract.”

Gabriel raised an eyebrow.

“What contract?”

I smiled.

“The one where we both promise never to treat each other like strangers again.”

For the first time since our wedding…

Gabriel laughed.

And that night, we removed the old agreement.

Not because our marriage failed.

But because it had finally become real.

Months later, Madrid stopped talking about Clara Ríos.

They talked about Sofia Montero and Gabriel Valcárcel.

Not as a business alliance.

Not as a convenient marriage.

But as two people who almost lost each other because they were too afraid to say what they felt.

And sometimes…

the person who stays quietly beside you for years is not the person you settled for.

It is the person you were too blind to recognize.
