I looked at the phone screen for several seconds.
“Chloe will be here.”
That sentence contained everything.
Not an apology.
Not an explanation.
Not even a question about whether I was okay.
Daniel left me at the airport.
Ignored my calls.
Disappeared for eight days.
And now he wanted me to return home before seven because another woman was waiting.
I didn’t feel angry.
I didn’t feel hurt.
I only felt tired.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“I won’t come home.”
There was silence.
Then his voice changed.
“Elena, don’t start again.”
Again.
That word.
Like my feelings were always an inconvenience.
Like my pain was just another problem he had to manage.
“I am not starting anything.”
I looked at the documents on my desk.
The account records.
The mortgage information.
The evidence of every strange movement in the last few months.
“I’m ending something.”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he laughed softly.
“You are being dramatic.”
I closed my eyes.
Five years.
Five years of marriage.
And he still thought the biggest problem was my reaction.
“Daniel.”
“Do you remember why we bought that house?”
He was silent.
“Because you said you wanted a place where we could build our future.”
“I remember.”
“You said no matter how busy you became, you would always come home.”
His breathing changed slightly.
“But eight days ago, you left me at the airport.”
“Not because of an emergency.”
“Not because something happened.”
“You simply decided to leave.”
“Elena…”
“No.”
I interrupted him.
“For once, listen to me.”
The line became quiet.
“I spent eight days trying to understand what I did wrong.”
“I wondered if I wasn’t supportive enough.”
“If I wasn’t gentle enough.”
“If I asked for too much.”
“But then I realized something.”
“What?”
“You never left because I wasn’t enough.”
“You left because you believed I would always stay.”
Daniel stopped talking.
Because that was the truth he didn’t want to hear.
After a few seconds, his voice became lower.
“Are you saying you want a divorce?”
I looked at the wedding photo on my desk.
The younger version of us.
The two people who once believed love could solve everything.
“Yes.”
The answer came naturally.
Almost peacefully.
“No.”
His voice immediately changed.
“No, Elena.”
“You can’t just decide this after a misunderstanding.”
“A misunderstanding?”
I smiled faintly.
“Daniel.”
“A misunderstanding is forgetting an anniversary.”
“A misunderstanding is having a bad day.”
“Leaving your wife alone at an airport and disappearing for eight days is a choice.”
He didn’t respond.
I continued:
“And bringing Chloe home before even talking to me…”
“That is also a choice.”
His breathing became heavier.
“Chloe is not what you think.”
“I hope not.”
“Because if she is innocent, then you destroyed our marriage for nothing.”
The silence on the other end lasted longer.
Then Daniel said:
“Come home tonight.”
“No.”
“We need to talk face to face.”
“I already talked enough.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
I looked out the window.
For years, I had waited for him to understand me.
Now I no longer needed him to.
“Goodbye, Daniel.”
I ended the call.

For the first time in five years…
I was the one who chose to leave.
When I arrived home the next day, Daniel was already there.
He was standing in the living room.
Waiting.
Like he was certain I would return.
“You really didn’t come last night.”
I placed my bag down.
“No.”
His eyes moved to the suitcase in my hand.
“You are serious.”
“Yes.”
He looked almost confused.
Because he had never imagined I could actually walk away.
“You love me.”
I looked at him.
“I did.”
That answer hurt him.
The past tense.
He noticed.
“You did?”
I nodded.
“Love doesn’t disappear in one day.”
“But respect can.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Then the doorbell rang.
Neither of us moved.
Until he looked toward the entrance.
“Chloe.”
So she was really here.
I looked at him.
“Daniel.”
“One last question.”
“What?”
“Did you leave me at the airport because of her?”
He froze.
That pause was enough.
I didn’t need another answer.
The door opened.
Chloe Bennett stood there.
She looked surprised when she saw me.
“Elena?”
I smiled politely.
“Hello.”
She immediately looked at Daniel.
He looked uncomfortable.
For the first time, I saw him unable to control the situation.
The man who always had an answer…
Had nothing to say.
Chloe stepped inside.
“I think there has been a misunderstanding.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
“I think everything is finally clear.”
She frowned.
“What do you mean?”
I picked up my suitcase.
“Daniel wanted time.”
“So I gave him time.”
“Time to choose.”
“And he already chose.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Elena, wait.”
I stopped.
But I didn’t turn around.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“The woman you left me for…”
“She didn’t take me away from you.”
“You gave me away yourself.”
Nobody spoke.
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, Daniel finally called my name.
But this time…
I didn’t stop.
Because eight days ago, he walked away from me without looking back.
Today…
I was doing the same.
And the difference was simple.
He left because he thought I would chase him.
I left because I finally knew I deserved someone who would never make me run after them.
