Seven days.
That was all the time left before my marriage with Adrian Cole officially ended.
Seven days before I would no longer be the woman standing behind the famous commander.
Seven days before I would disappear from his world completely.
And the strange thing was…
For the first time in seven months, I felt peaceful.
I used to think losing Adrian would destroy me.
I used to believe that if the man I loved walked away, I would never recover.
But after losing Noah, I discovered something worse than losing my husband.
It was losing myself while trying to keep someone who had already stopped choosing me.
The next morning, Adrian came back to my hospital room.
He looked exhausted.
His uniform was still perfect, but his eyes were different.
He stood at the door for several seconds before speaking.
“Mara.”
I looked up from the documents in my hand.
“Yes?”
That simple response made him freeze.
Before, whenever he called my name with that tone, I would immediately ask what was wrong.
I would look for any sign that he still cared.
Now I just waited.
“What are you doing?”
I looked down.
“Paperwork.”
He walked closer.
Maybe he expected me to hide something.
Maybe he expected me to ask why he didn’t come back last night.
But I didn’t.
His expression became complicated.
“You really don’t want to know where I was?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
The answer was so calm that it seemed to hurt him.
“Mara, this isn’t like you.”
I smiled faintly.
“Isn’t this what you wanted?”
He frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“For years, you told me I was too emotional.”
“Too dependent.”
“Too suspicious.”
“You said you wanted me to trust you.”
I looked directly at him.
“So I learned.”
Those three words silenced him.
Because he finally realized something.
I wasn’t becoming cold.
I was becoming someone who no longer needed his approval.
At that moment, his phone rang.
The name on the screen appeared.
Olivia Reed.
In the past, seeing her name would have made my heart tighten.
I would have watched his expression.
I would have wondered why she always needed him.
This time, I simply looked away.
Adrian noticed.
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Mara…”
“It’s okay.”
“You can answer.”
His hand stopped.
“You don’t care?”
I looked at him.
“Should I?”
For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.
He rejected the call.
“I need to talk to you.”
I closed the file.
“About what?”
His voice became lower.
“About us.”
I almost laughed.
Us.
A word he had forgotten existed.
“There is no us anymore, Adrian.”
His face changed.
“Don’t say that.”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t mean it?”
He didn’t answer.
Because deep down, he knew I meant every word.
That afternoon, Rachel came to complete the final divorce procedures.
Adrian happened to return when she was leaving.
He saw the documents in my hand.
His expression instantly changed.
“What’s that?”
I didn’t hide it.
“The divorce agreement.”
His eyes moved between me and Rachel.
“You actually did it?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He stared at me as if this was impossible.
“But you never wanted a divorce.”
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
“I wanted my husband back.”
The sentence hit him harder than anger would have.
“I wanted the man who stayed awake when Noah had nightmares.”
“The man who held my hand when I was afraid.”
“The man who promised that nothing would separate us.”
I looked at him.
“But that man disappeared long before I filed these papers.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.
For once, he had nothing to say.
Then he whispered:
“Are you leaving me because of Olivia?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“I am leaving because of myself.”
That night, Adrian couldn’t sleep.
For seven months, he had convinced himself that I was only grieving.
That eventually I would forgive.
That eventually I would return to the woman who waited for him.
But now he understood.
I wasn’t waiting anymore.
The next day, something happened that changed everything.
Adrian received a report from the investigation department.
It was about Noah’s accident.
A report he had never fully read.
Because Olivia had always told him the same story.
That she had lost sight of Noah for a few minutes.
That everything happened suddenly.
That she had tried her best.
But the new investigation contained a detail that made Adrian’s hands shake.
The timeline was wrong.
Forty-seven minutes.
The exact amount of time Olivia waited before calling for help.
Forty-seven minutes that she could never explain.
And then came the second piece of evidence.
A witness statement.
Someone had seen Olivia arguing with a stranger near the location where Noah disappeared.
Adrian stared at the papers.
His breathing became heavier.
For seven months, he had defended her.
He had told Mara to stop blaming Olivia.
He had told her to move on.
But what if Mara was right?
What if the person he protected was the person who destroyed their family?
That evening, Adrian went to find Olivia.
She was sitting in his office, exactly like she had done countless times before.
When she saw his expression, her smile disappeared.
“Adrian?”
He placed the documents on the table.
“Explain.”
Olivia looked at the papers.
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
And that second was enough.
“You knew.”
Her lips trembled.
“I can explain.”
“No.”
His voice was colder than she had ever heard.
“You let me believe my wife was wrong.”
“You let me believe Mara was cruel.”
“You let me believe my son was just an accident.”
Olivia stepped closer.
“Adrian, I was scared.”
He stepped back.
For the first time, he didn’t protect her.
He didn’t comfort her.
He didn’t call her sister.
Because suddenly, he remembered something.
Mara had been the only person who lost Noah.
But Olivia had always been the person he chose.
And that realization destroyed him.
Three days later, my divorce was finalized.
The same day, I left for the classified project “Zorro.”
No goodbye.
No final conversation.
No last look.
When Adrian arrived at the airport, the plane had already disappeared into the clouds.
He stood there holding the divorce certificate.
The same man who commanded thousands of soldiers couldn’t stop one woman from leaving.
Ten years later, the world knew Commander Adrian Cole as a legendary military figure.
But those closest to him knew something else.
He kept one old photograph in his office.
A picture of three people.
Him.
Mara.
And Noah.
Because some losses could never be recovered.
Some apologies could never arrive in time.
And some people only understand someone’s value…
After they have already lost the chance to reach them.
But Adrian never knew one thing.
The classified project that took Mara away for ten years was not the end of her story.
It was the beginning of the identity she had hidden from everyone.
Including him.
