PART 2: The Father Who Was Never Told

When I opened my eyes again, the first thing I saw was the white ceiling.

The second thing I felt was the emptiness beside me.

For a brief moment, panic rushed through my body.

Then I remembered.

The baby.

My hand moved immediately toward my stomach.

But instead of the familiar weight that had been with me for eight months, there was only a strange emptiness.

A nurse noticed my movement and smiled gently.

—Your son is healthy.

Son.

That word made my eyes burn.

My son.

A few hours ago, he had only existed inside me.

Now he was somewhere outside this room, breathing, alive, real.

—Where is he?

The nurse looked toward the small window.

—The pediatric team is checking him because he was born early, but his condition is stable.

I closed my eyes.

Relief came first.

Then fear.

Because there was one more person I had to face.

Mateo.

The door opened quietly.

I expected a nurse.

Instead, he walked in.

No surgical mask.

No white coat covering his expression.

Just Mateo.

The man I had loved for three years.

The man I had left eight months ago without giving him the truth.

He stopped beside the bed.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he looked at me.

—Why?

One word.

But it carried eight months of confusion.

Eight months of anger.

Eight months of questions.

I looked away.

—I thought it was better this way.

His expression hardened.

—Better for who?

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

Not for him.

Not for our son.

Only for me.

For the part of me that was afraid.

Eight months ago, when I discovered I was pregnant, I had already decided to leave.

Not because I didn’t love Mateo.

Because I loved him too much.

Our breakup had been ugly.

Mateo had just accepted a position at the hospital.

His career was beginning.

My own work required constant travel.

Every conversation became an argument.

Every promise became a question.

Until one night, exhausted and angry, he said the sentence I never forgot.

“Maybe we are just two people who love each other but don’t know how to stay together.”

The next morning, I found out I was pregnant.

I wanted to tell him.

I picked up my phone dozens of times.

But then I remembered his words.

Maybe we don’t know how to stay together.

So I made the decision for both of us.

I disappeared.

Mateo stared at me.

—You thought I wouldn’t want my own child?

My throat tightened.

—I thought you would choose your career.

He laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

—Clara, do you really know me that little?

I couldn’t answer.

Because the truth was painful.

I knew the doctor.

The professional.

The man who saved lives.

But maybe I had forgotten the person behind the title.

The door opened again.

Leo entered holding a small file.

He looked between us.

The tension was obvious.

—I’m guessing the conversation started.

Mateo didn’t look at him.

—Tell her.

I frowned.

—Tell me what?

Leo hesitated.

Then he placed the file on the table.

—The reason Mateo never came after you.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Mateo.

He looked away.

—What does that mean?

Leo sighed.

—After you disappeared, Mateo searched for you.

I froze.

—No.

—Yes.

Leo continued.

—He called your old workplace. He went to your apartment. He even contacted people who knew you.

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

—But he stopped.

I whispered.

—Why?

Mateo finally spoke.

His voice was low.

—Because I found your message.

I looked confused.

—What message?

He took out his phone.

Opened something.

Then handed it to me.

It was an old message.

One I had sent the night before disappearing.

“I think we both need to move on. Don’t look for me.”

My breath caught.

I remembered writing it.

I remembered crying while typing it.

But I never imagined he would believe it completely.

Mateo looked at me.

—I thought you chose to leave me.

The pain in his eyes was worse than anger.

—I thought you didn’t want me in your life anymore.

Tears slowly filled my eyes.

Because all this time…

We had both been hurt by the same misunderstanding.

A small cry suddenly came from the hallway.

Both of us turned.

A nurse entered carrying a tiny bundle.

—Someone wants to meet his parents.

My entire body froze.

Mateo looked at the baby.

And everything changed.

The cold expression disappeared.

The anger disappeared.

The man who had stood in front of me as a wounded lover became something else.

A father.

He approached slowly.

Almost carefully.

As if he was afraid the moment would disappear.

—Can I?

The nurse smiled.

—Of course.

Mateo held our son.

His hands, the same hands that performed complicated surgeries every day, were suddenly trembling.

He looked down.

And tears appeared in his eyes.

I had never seen Mateo cry.

Not when he lost patients.

Not when we fought.

Not when we separated.

But now…

For our son.

—He is so small.

His voice broke.

I looked away.

Because that was the moment I realized something.

I hadn’t only stolen eight months from Mateo.

I had stolen eight months from my son too.

That night, Mateo sat beside my hospital bed.

The baby slept between us.

Neither of us talked about the past.

Not yet.

Some wounds needed time before they could be touched.

But before leaving, Mateo stopped at the door.

—Clara.

I looked up.

He hesitated.

Then said:

—I don’t know if I can forgive you quickly.

My heart sank.

But then he continued.

—But I want to learn how to be his father.

A tear escaped before I could stop it.

Because after eight months of hiding…

After eight months of running…

The truth was finally here.

And tomorrow, we would have to decide whether the family we almost lost…

Could become the family we never stopped wanting.
