Part 2: The Trip That Ended Everything

I didn’t leave the room immediately.

That surprised me.

A part of me thought I would scream.
That I would throw the broken perfume bottle at Ethan’s feet and demand an explanation.

But I didn’t.

I simply stood there, looking at the pieces of glass scattered across the floor.

The same way my heart had been scattered for months.

The difference was that the perfume could never be repaired.

And neither could I.

Ethan finally noticed my silence.

He looked at me while holding Chloe’s hand.

“Olivia…”

I raised my eyes.

For years, that voice had been my weakness.

A simple call of my name could make me forgive things I shouldn’t have forgiven.

But that night, it sounded empty.

“I’m tired,” I said.

His eyebrows tightened.

“Tired of what?”

I almost smiled.

Because even then, he didn’t understand.

Not the broken perfume.

Not the trip.

Not Chloe.

Not the years of being placed second.

“I’m tired of always having to explain why I’m hurt.”

Ethan opened his mouth.

But Chloe interrupted.

“Olivia, I think you’re being too sensitive.”

I looked at her.

For the first time, I didn’t see an insecure girl who needed protection.

I saw someone who knew exactly what she was doing.

“You always say that,” I replied.

She froze.

“What?”

“You always say I’m too sensitive.”

The room became silent.

“Every time you cross a line, Ethan tells me to understand you.”

I looked at Ethan.

“Every time you hurt me, I am the one who has to be mature.”

His expression changed.

“Olivia, don’t start a fight.”

A fight.

That word.

It was always a fight when I asked for respect.

But it was never a problem when Chloe took my place.

I nodded slowly.

“You’re right.”

Ethan seemed surprised.

“You’re finally understanding?”

I picked up my suitcase.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I’m finally accepting.”

That night, while Ethan slept on the floor like he promised, I stayed awake beside the window.

The ocean outside was calm.

Beautiful.

Almost cruel.

Because this was supposed to be our trip.

Our memory.

Our last adventure before graduation.

Instead, I was sitting alone in a room where another woman had become the center of my relationship.

I opened my phone.

I looked at Ethan’s name.

Four years.

Four years of messages.

Four years of photos.

Four years of believing that love meant patience.

Then I opened the last conversation.

A message I had written two weeks before the trip.

“After graduation, I hope we can finally start planning our future.”

He had replied:

“Of course, Olivia. You are the person I want beside me.”

I stared at those words.

Then I deleted the conversation.

Not because I hated him.

Because I finally understood.

Someone can love the version of you that always forgives.

But the moment you stop accepting pain, they call you difficult.

The next morning, Ethan woke up smiling.

“Good morning, love.”

I looked at him.

He didn’t know.

He still thought this was another argument.

Another moment where I would eventually forgive him.

“We should go to the wishing cliff today,” he said. “Remember? You wanted to make a promise there.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

His face softened.

He thought everything was fine.

That was the saddest part.

He didn’t realize he had already lost me.

The wishing cliff was crowded with tourists.

The ocean stretched endlessly beneath us.

The place was beautiful.

The kind of place people came to make promises.

Ethan held my hand.

“Four years ago, I promised I would stay with you forever.”

I looked at him.

He smiled.

“Today we make that promise again.”

I gently pulled my hand away.

“Ethan.”

Something in my voice made him stop.

“What?”

“I think we should end this.”

The wind blew between us.

For several seconds, he didn’t react.

Then he laughed.

A small, confused laugh.

“You’re joking.”

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“Olivia, because of yesterday?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at the ocean.

“Yesterday was just when I finally saw everything clearly.”

His face became tense.

“Chloe is my childhood friend.”

“I know.”

“She needs me.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

I turned toward him.

“Because I needed you too.”

That sentence broke his expression.

“You never told me.”

I almost laughed.

“I did.”

I remembered every birthday.
Every dinner.
Every moment I stayed silent hoping he would notice.

“I told you every time I looked hurt.”

I paused.

“You just preferred explaining her behavior instead of listening to mine.”

Ethan became quiet.

For the first time, he had no excuse.

When we returned to the hotel, I packed my things.

Chloe watched from the doorway.

“You’re really leaving?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me carefully.

“I didn’t want to ruin your relationship.”

I zipped my suitcase.

“You didn’t.”

She looked surprised.

“Ethan did.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

Chloe lowered her eyes.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

But she didn’t.

She simply said:

“He loves me.”

I picked up my suitcase.

“Then you should have let him choose me before asking him to choose you.”

I walked past her.

Ethan was waiting outside.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“Olivia, the trip isn’t over.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

A small smile appeared on my face.

“But ours is.”

I left that day.

Alone.

The same way I should have arrived.

Three months later, graduation arrived.

I walked across the stage with my diploma in my hands.

Ethan wasn’t there.

Neither was Chloe.

And strangely…

I didn’t care.

I had spent years thinking losing Ethan would destroy me.

But losing myself had hurt much more.

After graduation, I accepted a position in another city.

New apartment.

New friends.

New life.

A year later, I received a message from an old classmate.

“Did you hear about Ethan?”

I stared at the screen.

I almost ignored it.

But curiosity won.

“He and Chloe broke up.”

I didn’t feel happy.

I didn’t feel satisfied.

I simply felt distant.

Apparently, after graduation, Ethan realized that Chloe didn’t need him as much as he thought.

She needed his attention.

His protection.

His constant sacrifice.

But when life became difficult, she disappeared.

And Ethan finally understood what he had lost.

A week later, I received a letter.

From him.

I opened it.

There were no excuses.

No explanations.

Only regret.

“I thought you would always wait for me.”

That sentence stayed in my mind.

Because it explained everything.

He didn’t lose me because of Chloe.

He lost me because he believed my love had no limit.

Years later, I saw Ethan again.

We met by chance at a coffee shop.

He looked older.

Calmer.

Different.

“Are you happy?” he asked.

I looked at the ring on my finger.

The life I had built.

The future I had chosen.

“Yes.”

He smiled sadly.

“I’m glad.”

I nodded.

Then I walked away.

Not because I hated him.

Not because I wanted revenge.

But because some people belong to a chapter of your life.

Not the whole book.

The graduation trip was supposed to be the beginning of our future.

Instead, it became the moment I finally chose myself.

And sometimes…

the greatest love story you can save is the one you have with yourself.
