PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED HIS EMPIRE

The room remained silent.

More than three hundred people stared at the giant screen.

My name.

My shares.

My voting rights.

For seven years, everyone believed I was only Adrián Rivera’s wife.

The elegant woman standing behind him.

The person who smiled beside him during charity dinners.

The woman who supported him while he built his empire.

Nobody knew that before becoming Mrs. Rivera…

I was Lucía Mendoza.

The woman who had saved Rivera Group from bankruptcy five years earlier.

The woman who invested when everyone else believed the company had no future.

The woman who transferred the first major capital injection.

Including the money that allowed Adrián to expand internationally.

Adrián looked at me.

Not with anger anymore.

With fear.

Because he finally remembered something he had chosen to forget.

He had never owned everything.

I had simply allowed him to believe he did.

—Lucía…

His voice was low.

Almost pleading.

I lowered the microphone.

—Yes?

—We need to talk privately.

I smiled.

—No.

A murmur passed through the room.

—We already had seven years for private conversations.

I looked toward the audience.

—Tonight, everyone can listen.

Adrián clenched his jaw.

Vanessa stood behind him.

Her hand was still protecting her stomach.

The same hand that had been hidden minutes before.

The same secret she thought would never be exposed.

—You don’t understand the situation.

I looked at him.

—Then explain it.

Silence.

He had explanations for everything.

The meetings.

The trips.

The late nights.

The messages.

But not this.

Not the photographs.

Not the pregnancy.

Not the fact that he brought another woman into the celebration of his own marriage.

The company’s legal director approached the stage.

He had worked with me for years.

He knew the truth.

—Mrs. Rivera.

I corrected him.

—Miss Mendoza.

The man nodded.

—Miss Mendoza, the council members have received the notification. The extraordinary meeting will take place tomorrow at nine.

Adrián looked at him.

—You cannot do this without me.

The lawyer remained calm.

—According to the shareholder agreement, she can.

That sentence destroyed the last illusion.

Adrián was not the owner.

He was only the face.

I was the foundation.

The next morning, the boardroom was completely different.

The same people who once praised Adrián were now watching him carefully.

Investors hated uncertainty.

And Adrián had become uncertainty.

The first document placed on the table was the report of the incident.

The second was the evidence of his relationship with Vanessa.

The third was the financial review.

I didn’t want revenge.

I wanted control.

There was a difference.

—The issue today is not personal morality.

I looked around the table.

—The issue is whether Mr. Rivera’s decisions have affected the interests of this company.

Nobody disagreed.

Because the numbers spoke louder than emotions.

The contracts connected to Vanessa’s department were reviewed.

The expenses.

The benefits.

The promotions.

Everything.

And then came the final discovery.

Vanessa had not simply been Adrián’s lover.

She had been secretly receiving company resources through a series of third-party contracts.

Money from Rivera Group.

Money that shareholders had never approved.

Adrián lowered his head.

For the first time…

He had no words.

That night, he came to my house.

The same house where we had lived for seven years.

The same place where I had waited for him.

But this time, I didn’t open the door immediately.

When I finally did, he looked exhausted.

Not like the powerful businessman from the gala.

Just like a man who had lost control.

—You planned everything.

I looked at him.

—No.

A pause.

“You did.”

He shook his head.

—I never wanted to hurt you.

I almost smiled.

—Adrián, that’s what people say when they regret the consequences.

He looked down.

—Do you still love me?

The question surprised me.

Not because it hurt.

Because it was so late.

Seven years ago, that question could have changed everything.

Now it only sounded empty.

—I loved the man I thought you were.

His eyes became red.

—And now?

I stepped back.

—Now I know who you are.

Silence.

Then he whispered:

—Can we fix this?

I closed the door halfway.

—No.

His face changed.

—Lucía…

—You didn’t lose me because of Vanessa.

A pause.

“You lost me when you became someone who thought I would never leave.”

The door closed.

Six months later, Rivera Group recovered.

Not under Adrián.

Under a new structure.

I became the official chairwoman.

The company continued growing.

The scandal became old news.

As for Adrián…

He left the position he once believed belonged to him.

Vanessa disappeared from the public eye after the financial investigation.

The woman who thought she had won because Adrián chose her eventually discovered the truth.

She had not won a man.

She had inherited his problems.

Years later, at another gala, a reporter asked me:

“Miss Mendoza, people say you destroyed your husband’s career. Do you regret it?”

I looked at the lights above me.

Then I smiled.

“No.”

“Because I didn’t destroy his career.”

“I stopped protecting it.”

The reporter asked:

“And what did you learn from everything?”

I answered:

“Never confuse someone’s dependence on you with their love for you.”

That night, I returned home alone.

Not lonely.

Free.

I removed the last photograph of Adrián from my office.

Not because I hated him.

Because it no longer represented my life.

For years, I had been standing beside a man who thought he was the center of the story.

But he was wrong.

The story was never about the man who betrayed me.

It was about the woman who finally remembered her own value.

And that woman…

was me.
