PART 2: THE MAN WHO CAME TO TAKE SOFIA HOME

The black car disappeared through the iron gates before Lucas remembered how to breathe.

He stood beneath the mansion’s entrance, staring at the empty road.

The rain had finally begun.

Behind him, Marta quietly picked up the divorce papers from the living room table.

Lucas turned sharply.

“Who was that man?”

Marta hesitated.

“I don’t know, sir.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

For three years, everyone in that house had learned to recognize Lucas Hart’s anger.

But Marta had never seen him like this.

Not furious.

Afraid.

She placed the papers back on the table.

“Perhaps you should ask yourself why Mrs. Hart needed someone else to come for her.”

Lucas’s expression darkened.

“Marta.”

“She nearly died last time.”

The room went silent.

Lucas stared at her.

“What?”

Marta’s eyes filled with tears.

“After the third procedure. The hospital called you.”

“I was in a meeting.”

“You were with Miss Vale.”

His jaw tightened.

Marta continued before courage abandoned her.

“Mrs. Hart came home barely able to stand. She still asked me not to tell you how bad it had been because she said you hated being bothered.”

Lucas looked toward the staircase.

For the first time, the mansion seemed strangely unfamiliar.

There was Sofia’s favorite cup beside the kitchen sink.

Her slippers near the sofa.

A book left facedown on the window seat.

Small traces of a woman he had somehow believed would remain there forever.

He picked up the divorce agreement.

Sofia had already signed.

Beside her signature was a second document.

A waiver.

She wanted nothing from him.

No mansion.

No shares.

No settlement.

Not even the jewelry Lucas had bought during their marriage.

He laughed once, but there was no amusement in it.

“She’s trying to scare me.”

Marta said nothing.

Lucas called Sofia again.

The phone remained off.

He called his assistant.

“Find the car.”

There was silence on the other end.

“Sir?”

“The black sedan that left my house. Find the registration. Find the driver. Find where Sofia went.”

“Understood.”

“And find everything you can about the man.”

Lucas ended the call.

Twenty-seven minutes later, his assistant called back.

“Mr. Hart…”

“Speak.”

“The vehicle is registered to Reed Capital Holdings.”

Lucas frowned.

“Reed?”

“Yes.”

The name struck him because Sofia’s maiden name was Reed.

Lucas slowly sat down.

“What kind of company?”

His assistant hesitated.

“Private investment group. Their holdings are difficult to trace because several subsidiaries are overseas, but…”

“But what?”

“They’re one of the largest private shareholders in Hart Technologies.”

Lucas stood.

“That’s impossible.”

Hart Technologies had been founded by his grandfather.

Lucas knew every major investor.

Or he thought he did.

“Who controls Reed Capital?”

“We’re still checking.”

“Check faster.”

He hung up.

Across the city, Sofia was sitting in the back seat of the same black sedan.

The man beside her had not spoken for several minutes.

His name was Adrian Reed.

He was thirty-two, impeccably dressed, and looked enough like Sofia around the eyes that no one who studied them carefully could have mistaken their relationship.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

“You look terrible.”

Sofia smiled faintly.

“Nice to see you too.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

He took off his glasses and stared at her.

“Four years.”

Sofia looked toward the rain sliding across the window.

“I know.”

“Four years without coming home.”

“I know.”

“Three pregnancies.”

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the coat covering her shoulders.

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“And you didn’t tell us about any of them.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

“If Dad had known—”

“He would have destroyed Lucas.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian leaned back.

“Maybe Lucas deserved it.”

“Maybe.”

The answer surprised him.

For years Sofia had defended her husband.

Lucas was busy.

Lucas was under pressure.

Lucas didn’t mean it.

Lucas would change.

There had always been another excuse.

Today there wasn’t.

Adrian studied his sister.

“Are you really finished?”

Sofia opened her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Even if he comes after you?”

“He will.”

“You’re certain?”

Sofia gave a tired smile.

“Lucas doesn’t love me, Adrian. But he hates losing things he believes belong to him.”

The car turned toward a private residential tower.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Then he’s about to discover you were never his property.”

That evening, Lucas returned to Hart Technologies.

Everyone had already left except his assistant and the legal department.

A folder waited on his desk.

Lucas opened it.

The first page contained a photograph.

Adrian Reed.

The second contained corporate records.

The third made Lucas stop breathing.

Reed Capital Holdings.

Beneficial ownership:

Sofia Reed — 38%.

Adrian Reed — 38%.

Jonathan Reed — 24%.

Lucas reread the page.

Then again.

“This is wrong.”

His assistant stood across from him.

“We verified it.”

“Sofia doesn’t have money.”

The assistant looked uncomfortable.

Lucas raised his head.

“Say it.”

“Mrs. Hart doesn’t use her family money.”

“What family money?”

Another folder slid across the desk.

Lucas opened it.

Jonathan Reed.

Founder of Reed International.

Infrastructure.

Biotechnology.

Private equity.

Real estate.

Estimated family assets: $11.8 billion.

Lucas stared at the number.

Sofia had never told him.

Then a memory returned.

Their wedding.

Only twelve guests from Sofia’s side had attended.

Lucas’s mother had mocked her afterward.

“What kind of bride doesn’t even have important relatives?”

Sofia had merely smiled.

Lucas had never asked why.

He had simply assumed there was nothing worth knowing.

His assistant cleared his throat.

“There’s something else.”

Lucas’s eyes lifted.

“Reed Capital began purchasing Hart Technologies shares eighteen months ago.”

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“How much do they own?”

“Directly and through associated funds…”

The assistant swallowed.

“Twenty-two percent.”

Lucas’s face changed.

Twenty-two percent was not enough to control the company.

But it was enough to cause serious problems.

Especially now.

Because Hart Technologies was preparing for a crucial board vote.

Lucas walked toward the window.

“Did Sofia know?”

“I would assume so.”

“Don’t assume.”

His phone rang.

Bianca Vale.

Lucas stared at her name.

Yesterday, he would have answered immediately.

Tonight, he declined the call.

Three seconds later, she called again.

He declined again.

Then a message appeared.

Lucas, I need you. Something happened.

He ignored it.

Another notification appeared.

This one came from the chairman of Hart Technologies.

BOARD MEETING MOVED TO 8:00 A.M. TOMORROW.

Attendance mandatory.

Lucas called his assistant.

“Why was the meeting moved?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

Before the assistant could leave, another email arrived.

Lucas opened it.

The sender was Hart Technologies Legal Department.

The subject contained six words:

NOTICE OF SHAREHOLDER REPRESENTATIVE APPOINTMENT.

Lucas clicked.

His eyes moved rapidly down the document.

Reed Capital Holdings had appointed a representative to attend tomorrow’s board meeting.

Name:

Sofia Reed.

Lucas stared at the screen.

His wife had never once visited his company.

She had never asked about his business.

Whenever he discussed acquisitions at dinner, she listened quietly.

Whenever his mother called Sofia useless because she contributed nothing to the Hart family, Sofia never defended herself.

Lucas had mistaken silence for ignorance.

He had mistaken patience for weakness.

And worst of all, he had mistaken love for dependence.

At seven fifty-five the next morning, the boardroom doors opened.

Lucas was already seated at the head of the table.

His mother sat three seats away.

Several directors whispered among themselves.

Then Adrian entered.

The room quieted.

He stepped aside.

Sofia walked in behind him.

She wore a simple ivory suit.

No wedding ring.

No expensive necklace.

Nothing Lucas had given her.

Yet somehow, she looked more untouchable than she ever had inside his mansion.

Lucas stood automatically.

“Sofia.”

She didn’t answer.

She walked past him and sat opposite him.

His mother frowned.

“What is she doing here?”

The chairman adjusted his glasses.

“Mrs. Hart is here as Reed Capital’s authorized shareholder representative.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Lucas’s mother snapped. “She doesn’t know anything about business.”

Sofia slowly looked at her.

For three years, she had lowered her eyes whenever that woman insulted her.

Not today.

“My name is Sofia Reed.”

Lucas’s mother froze.

Sofia opened the folder in front of her.

“And considering Reed Capital is currently the second-largest shareholder represented at this table, I suggest you remember it.”

Nobody spoke.

Lucas stared at her.

“Why are you doing this?”

Sofia finally looked directly at him.

“I’m not doing anything to you.”

She pushed a document across the polished table.

“I’m simply taking back what I stopped protecting while I was busy protecting our marriage.”

Lucas glanced down.

It was a shareholder proposal.

His expression changed.

The proposal requested an independent investigation into several unauthorized transfers connected to company-controlled accounts.

Three million dollars.

Then another.

Then another.

All connected to one name.

Bianca Vale.

Lucas’s mother went pale.

“Lucas?”

He didn’t answer.

Sofia leaned back.

“You thought the only thing I discovered was the necklace.”

Lucas looked at her sharply.

She continued.

“I found everything.”

The room seemed to shrink around him.

Adrian placed another sealed envelope beside Sofia.

Lucas stared at it.

“What is that?”

Sofia didn’t open it.

Instead, she looked toward the chairman.

“Before we begin the vote, there’s one more person who needs to enter.”

The boardroom door opened.

A gray-haired man stepped inside.

Lucas recognized him immediately.

Dr. Raymond.

The obstetrician.

But the man standing beside him was someone Lucas had never seen before.

A lawyer carrying a medical file.

Lucas slowly rose.

“Why is my wife’s doctor here?”

Sofia’s face lost all expression.

Dr. Raymond looked at Lucas for several seconds before placing the file on the table.

“Because there is something about the previous three pregnancies that Mrs. Reed only discovered yesterday.”

Lucas’s anger vanished.

Sofia turned toward the doctor.

Her voice was almost a whisper.

“Tell him exactly what you told me.”

Dr. Raymond opened the file.

“The first three losses were not recorded as voluntary decisions by Mrs. Reed.”

Lucas stopped breathing.

Across the table, Sofia’s fingers curled into her palm.

Then the doctor removed one final document.

“And the authorization signatures attached to two of those procedures…”

He looked directly at Lucas.

“…were not hers.”

The entire boardroom fell silent.

Sofia slowly turned her eyes toward the man she had once trusted with her life.

And for the first time, Lucas Hart looked afraid of what she was about to discover next.
