Part 2: The Secret Behind Claudia’s Pregnancy

I didn’t sleep that night.

I sat on the edge of the bed with my phone in my hand, staring at the old photograph until the faces began to blur.

Gabriel.

Claudia.

And my brother, Mateo.

The photograph had been taken at least six years earlier.

Mateo had died five years ago.

According to everyone, it had been an accident.

So why was someone sending me this now?

And what did any of it have to do with Claudia?

At six in the morning, I finally called the unknown number.

No answer.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Then a message appeared.

“Ask Claudia who the father of her baby is.”

My fingers went cold.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Then I heard the front door.

Gabriel had returned.

He walked into the bedroom looking exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His eyes were red.

When he saw me dressed and sitting on the bed, he stopped.

—You’re awake.

—Where were you?

It was the first time in weeks I had asked.

His expression changed.

—At the hospital.

—With Claudia?

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered enough.

I stood.

—Who is the father of Claudia’s baby?

Gabriel went completely still.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Terrified.

And that frightened me more than any confession could have.

—Why are you asking that?

I held up the photograph.

The color drained from his face.

—Where did you get that?

—Answer me.

Gabriel stared at Mateo’s face.

Then he sat down slowly.

—Elena, there are things I should have told you years ago.

I laughed bitterly.

—Apparently.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

—Claudia’s baby isn’t mine.

My chest loosened for half a second.

Then he continued.

—But she came back because of Mateo.

I stopped breathing.

—Mateo is dead.

—I know.

—Then explain.

Gabriel looked at me.

—Before Mateo died, he and Claudia were together.

I shook my head immediately.

—Impossible.

Mateo knew Claudia had been Gabriel’s first love.

He would never—

—They were together, Elena.

His voice broke.

—And I knew.

The room seemed to tilt.

Gabriel explained that after he and Claudia separated, Mateo had met her again by chance.

At first they hid the relationship because they were afraid of hurting him.

Eventually Gabriel discovered it.

There had been an argument.

A terrible one.

Mateo had accused Gabriel of treating Claudia like property even after their relationship had ended.

Gabriel had accused Mateo of betrayal.

Three days later, Mateo died.

My hands began trembling.

—You told me you barely knew what happened that night.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

—I lied.

The word struck harder than I expected.

—Why?

—Because I was there.

Silence.

I stepped backward.

Gabriel immediately stood.

—Elena—

—Don’t touch me.

He froze.

—I didn’t cause the accident.

—Then what happened?

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

Claudia.

He rejected the call.

It rang again.

Again.

On the fourth call, he answered.

—Claudia, not now.

I could hear her crying through the speaker.

Then she said something that made Gabriel’s expression collapse.

—Someone knows.

Gabriel looked at me.

Claudia continued.

—They sent me the photograph too.

I grabbed my coat.

—Where is she?

—Elena—

—Where?

Twenty minutes later, we entered Claudia’s apartment.

She was standing beside the window.

She looked nothing like the confident woman from my office.

Her face was pale.

On the table lay several photographs.

Mateo and Claudia at a restaurant.

Mateo holding her hand.

Mateo kissing her forehead.

And one photograph taken outside a fertility clinic.

I looked at Claudia.

—Tell me everything.

She began crying.

—I loved your brother.

Those four words destroyed the last piece of certainty I had left.

Claudia explained that Mateo had wanted to marry her.

He had even bought a ring.

But before he could propose, he died.

Afterward, she left the country.

She couldn’t stay near Gabriel.

Couldn’t stay near me.

Couldn’t walk through streets where everything reminded her of Mateo.

—Then why did you come back?

Claudia placed one hand over her abdomen.

—Because of this baby.

I stared at her.

She swallowed.

—Before Mateo died, we had been planning a future together.

She didn’t explain further.

She didn’t need to.

I understood only the part that mattered.

Her pregnancy was connected to my brother.

My knees nearly gave way.

Gabriel reached toward me.

I moved away.

—That’s why you’ve been taking care of her.

He nodded.

—Mateo asked me to protect her if anything ever happened to him.

I laughed without humor.

—And apparently protecting her required lying to your wife every single day.

—I was afraid telling you would reopen everything.

—You don’t get to decide which truth I’m strong enough to hear.

Gabriel had no answer.

Then Claudia whispered:

—There’s something else.

She opened a drawer and removed an envelope.

My name was written across it.

Elena.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Mateo’s.

My brother had written that envelope.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first lines were enough to make my eyes fill.

“Elena, if you’re reading this, something happened before I could tell you the truth.”

I couldn’t continue.

Gabriel turned away.

That was when I understood.

He had already read it.

—How long have you had this?

Claudia answered quietly.

—Five years.

I looked at Gabriel.

—And you knew?

—Yes.

Something inside me broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

It simply stopped holding on.

I removed the divorce agreement from my bag and placed it on the table.

Gabriel stared at it.

—What’s that?

—What should have happened a long time ago.

His face changed.

—Elena, wait.

—I’ve spent four years believing silence meant peace.

I looked directly at him.

—Now I understand that silence was simply the place where you kept all your lies.

He grabbed the document.

Then another paper slipped from my bag.

My medical appointment form.

Gabriel bent down before I could reach it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

He looked at me.

Then at the date.

Then at me again.

—You’re pregnant?

Nobody spoke.

Claudia covered her mouth.

Gabriel’s face became almost unrecognizable.

—Eight weeks?

I took the paper from his hand.

—You weren’t supposed to know.

His voice dropped.

—Why?

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because there were too many reasons.

Because while I had been imagining how to tell him about our baby, he had been disappearing every time Claudia called.

Because I had mistaken secrecy for betrayal.

Because he had mistaken lying for protection.

Because somewhere between those mistakes, our marriage had become something neither of us recognized.

Gabriel looked at the appointment information again.

—This is today.

I said nothing.

His eyes widened.

—Elena… what were you planning to do?

Before I could answer, Claudia suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.

Her expression changed.

—Wait.

She stared at Mateo’s letter.

Then at the photographs.

—This isn’t right.

Gabriel frowned.

—What?

Claudia pulled one photograph closer.

On its back was a date.

Her hands began shaking.

—This photograph wasn’t taken when Mateo was alive.

I stared at her.

—What are you talking about?

She turned it around.

There was Mateo, standing beside a black car.

Alive.

The date printed beneath the image was unmistakable.

It had been taken six months after the day my brother supposedly died.

The room went silent.

Gabriel looked as stunned as I felt.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another message from the unknown number.

This time there were only seven words.

“Your brother never died in that accident.”

A second message arrived immediately.

“He is alive.”

And then a third.

An address.

Beneath it:

“If you want the truth, come alone.”
