Part 2: The Man Waiting Downstairs

I stared at Luke’s message until the letters blurred.

“I’m down.”

“Go down. Don’t look back.”

Five years.

Five years since I had last seen Luke Reed.

Five years since he had stood outside my tiny apartment after the Ethan Pearson scandal and told me something I had been too broken to believe.

“If Daniel ever stops protecting you and becomes another person you need protection from, call me.”

Back then, I had chosen Daniel.

Tonight, I pressed the elevator button.

The doors opened.

I stepped inside with my suitcase, one hand resting unconsciously over my stomach.

For the first time, there were two of us leaving him.

When the elevator reached the lobby, a black car was waiting outside.

A man stood beside it.

Luke.

He looked different.

Older.

Sharper.

The careless young man I remembered had disappeared.

He wore a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, and when his eyes landed on my face, every trace of calm vanished.

“You have a fever.”

That was all he said.

Then he took my suitcase.

I instinctively tightened my grip.

“I can carry it.”

“Elena.”

His voice softened.

“You already carried enough.”

Those words nearly destroyed me.

I released the suitcase.

Luke opened the passenger door.

I climbed inside.

Only when the car started moving did I realize I was crying.

Silently.

No sobbing.

No sound.

Just tears sliding down my face while the city lights passed outside.

Luke didn’t ask questions.

He didn’t ask why I had called.

He didn’t ask what Daniel had done.

He simply turned the heater down when he noticed I was uncomfortable and placed a bottle of water beside me.

Twenty minutes later, my phone began vibrating.

Daniel.

I watched his name appear.

Once.

Twice.

Five times.

Twelve.

Luke glanced at the screen.

“Do you want me to turn it off?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I answered.

Daniel spoke immediately.

“Elena, where are you?”

His breathing was heavy.

Behind him, I could hear something fall.

“You weren’t home when I came back.”

I looked through the window.

“I left.”

Silence.

Then he laughed.

It was the same laugh from earlier.

Confident.

Almost amused.

“Stop acting childish and tell me where you are.”

“I’m not coming back.”

The laughter disappeared.

“Elena.”

His voice lowered.

“You’re sick.”

“I know.”

“You don’t have anyone.”

This time, the sentence didn’t hurt.

I looked at Luke.

His hands remained steady on the steering wheel.

I answered quietly.

“You were wrong.”

Daniel went silent.

Then his voice changed.

“Who are you with?”

I hung up.

The phone rang again immediately.

I switched it off.

Luke didn’t smile.

He didn’t celebrate.

He only said:

“Good.”

We reached a private clinic shortly afterward.

A doctor examined me and ordered blood tests.

Luke waited outside.

When the nurse returned with the ultrasound report I had brought, she looked surprised.

“You already knew?”

I nodded.

“Almost six weeks.”

She smiled gently.

“Then you need to be especially careful with the fever.”

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“Is the baby okay?”

“For now, everything looks normal.”

My eyes closed.

For now.

Those two words suddenly became the most precious thing in the world.

Later, Luke entered carrying medicine and warm porridge.

He placed everything on the table.

Then his eyes fell on the ultrasound report.

He froze.

I reached for it too late.

Luke looked at me.

“You’re pregnant?”

I nodded.

His jaw tightened.

“Does Daniel know?”

“No.”

“Are you going to tell him?”

I looked down at the tiny image.

“No.”

Luke was silent for several seconds.

Then he pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Okay.”

I looked up.

That was it?

No questions?

No judgment?

“You don’t want to know why?”

“You’ll tell me when you want to.”

Something inside my chest loosened.

At sunrise, Daniel finally discovered where I was.

Not because I told him.

Because he checked my bank card.

The clinic receptionist entered looking uncomfortable.

“Ms. Hart, there’s a gentleman downstairs asking for you.”

Luke stood immediately.

“Name?”

“Daniel Grant.”

My entire body stiffened.

Minutes later, voices erupted outside.

Then the door opened.

Daniel appeared.

His hair was messy.

His shirt was wrinkled.

In one hand he still held the container of sweet ginseng soup.

He looked like he had searched the entire city.

His eyes moved from me to Luke.

Something dark crossed his face.

“Luke Reed.”

Luke stood between him and my bed.

“Daniel.”

Daniel ignored him.

“Elena, come home.”

“No.”

His expression hardened.

“I crossed half the city because you wanted that ridiculous soup.”

He placed the container on the table.

“You disappear while I’m gone, and now I find you here with him?”

I almost laughed.

“You left to spend the night with Chloe.”

“That has nothing to do with this.”

“It has everything to do with this.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You’re emotional.”

“No.”

For the first time, my voice was completely steady.

“I’m finished.”

He stared at me.

Then his gaze dropped toward the table.

Toward the papers.

I saw the exact second he noticed the ultrasound report.

His face changed.

“Elena…”

I moved faster.

But Daniel had already picked it up.

He read the name.

He read the date.

Then he looked at me as if the entire room had disappeared.

“You’re pregnant?”

Luke moved beside me.

Daniel’s eyes immediately went to him.

Then back to me.

“How long?”

I didn’t answer.

His fingers trembled around the paper.

Suddenly, the arrogant man who had told me I had nowhere to go looked terrified.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I stared at him.

“I was going to.”

My voice cracked despite myself.

“Last night.”

His face drained of color.

I continued.

“I had the report in my bag while you were explaining why I wasn’t clean enough to become your wife.”

Daniel’s lips parted.

Nothing came out.

“I was going to surprise you.”

“Elena…”

“I thought you would be happy.”

“I am.”

He moved toward me.

“I am happy.”

Luke blocked him.

Daniel’s expression became furious.

“Move.”

“No.”

“This is between me and my fiancée.”

I slowly removed the engagement ring.

Daniel stopped breathing.

I placed it beside the untouched soup.

“I’m not your fiancée anymore.”

His eyes fixed on the ring.

Then something unexpected happened.

Daniel didn’t become angry.

He panicked.

“Elena, listen to me.”

He reached toward me.

“I was stupid.”

“I was angry.”

“My friends kept talking about what happened with Ethan, and I—”

“You believed them.”

“No.”

“You were ashamed of me.”

“No!”

His voice echoed through the room.

For the first time in five years, Daniel Grant looked completely out of control.

“I don’t care about Chloe.”

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“You left my bed to go to hers.”

“It was meaningless.”

“That doesn’t make it better.”

Daniel stared at me desperately.

“We’ll register the marriage today.”

I felt nothing.

Not joy.

Not relief.

Only exhaustion.

“Yesterday I wasn’t pure enough to be your wife.”

“Elena—”

“Today I’m pregnant, and suddenly I am?”

He had no answer.

I turned my face away.

“Leave.”

Daniel stood there for a long time.

Finally, Luke called security.

Before Daniel walked out, he looked at me one last time.

“You think Luke came because he still loves you?”

My heart stopped.

Luke’s expression changed.

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“Ask him why he disappeared five years ago.”

Then he left.

The room became silent.

I turned slowly toward Luke.

“What did he mean?”

Luke didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked to the window.

For several seconds, he stared at the sunrise.

Then he reached into his jacket.

He removed an old envelope.

My name was written across the front.

The handwriting was familiar.

My blood ran cold.

It belonged to Ethan Pearson.

The man who had lied to me five years ago.

The man whose betrayal had destroyed my reputation.

The man I had never seen again.

Luke placed the envelope in my hands.

“He sent this to me before he disappeared.”

My fingers trembled.

“Why do you have it?”

Luke looked directly into my eyes.

“Because Ethan wasn’t the only person who lied to you five years ago.”

I stopped breathing.

Luke’s next words shattered everything I thought I knew.

“Elena, Daniel didn’t accidentally find you that day.”

“He already knew Ethan’s fiancée was coming.”

“And he knew she had a knife.”

I stared at him.

Luke’s voice dropped.

“Daniel didn’t save you by coincidence.”

“He arranged to be there.”
